The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah - when they can't say racist shit, its free speech violations.

When they want to shut down free speech, its just their right to freedom of association.

The right wing has never been consistent in application of standards. They have one standard for the "undesirables" and one standard for the All American (c).

The right always designates undesirables, because that's in their nature. They need a scapegoat for why Trad never lasts.

I do wonder if from a raw logistical perspective you’d be better doing recreations for Jim-Crow, the effect would be much the same (massive investment into the African American community, particularly in the south) but it would probably be easier to administer (the only record you need is if a person was resident in an area when it had Jim-Crow) and much harder for anyone to argue against (you’re compensating the people who were directly impacted, or possibly their children or grandchildren if you want to backdate it a fair bit).

It just feels like a good response to do “find me a former slave and I’ll give them reparations” to go “I’ve got plenty of living folks who suffered under Jim-Crow, let’s him them reparations”.

Yes, I used to think freedom of speech should be protected absolutely.

Then I realized that the people who claimed it most ardently did not care about it from people that opposed them.

You defended a monster's right to free speech...and then he tried to take away that of other's.

So it was a pointless gesture that only helped monsters.

Honestly, no-one is consistent in application of standards. States' rights? Well, only when your state wants to do something the federal government doesn't want! Equal time for the other side? Only when you're the "other side" and in the minority.

Just about all of our alleged core ideals: freedom of speech, freedom of association, everything - is treated as little more than tactics to win a fight, and ready to be thrown away when not useful.

I found it strange how so many self-described libertarians stopped being libertarians when Donald Trump showed up. But not anymore. To many of them, libertarianism would create a dog-eat-dog world where their own people would end up on top, but if the government would help them be on top anyway, then who needs libertarianism and smaller government? So they abandon what they pretended were core principles in exchange for what they really want.

Good for her.

The issue I don't think is whether she'll be more popular than Mitch, because again Mitch has historic levels of unpopularity, it's the fact that Mitch and his army of orcs cheat.

FYI - Barr has recused himself from the Epstein case.

I fully expect Trump to be furious about this.

The challenge to the Evil Turtle is even better. I wish the challenger good luck.

Regarding the Epstein case, is it just me or do the events/relationships around that man look ironically similar to QAnon? Except for the latter being fictitious, of course.

I mean, Trump hasn't been "right" for that long. The Clintons attended his last wedding. He contributed to the Clinton foundation. When Trump was most directly involved with Epstein (included saying Epstein likes women younger than he does), Trump was a registered Democrat.

As weird as it is (considering he really is the embodiment of the GOP's id), he never really was "right" or "left." He just was a mercenary, courting whomever he pleased. And he's learned that courting the worst of the GOP is the easiest.

Given Epstein's ties and his background, I'd wager he skews Democratic.

Re: Mitch's challenger. Very interesting, will be reading up on her positions and submitting a donation to her campaign.

Though, I question if she can beat him. KY has a Republican partisan lean of +23, and while Mitch has a net approval of -13 (both figures according to Five Thirty Eight), there may not be enough potential Democratic voters to put her over the top. Especially since a Republican is often preferred over conservative Democrats.

It's simply not fertile ground for blue victories.

If it was a fair election she'd certainly win but Kentucky does not have fair elections.

https://rantt.com/the-top-10-most-gerrymandered-states-in-america/

We're No. 5

Like much of the South, Kentucky continues to suffer unequal representation as a result of gerrymandering. Nearly 35% of the vote statewide goes to Democrats, but only five out of six representatives are Republican. A strategy of continuing to cram growing urban populations into existing district boundaries has resulted in much of the lopsided representation. The following districts have large urban populations that have been cut out of other districts and attached to sprawling rural areas.

Even if it is an uphill battle, the stronger his opponent, the more the Republicans have to divert resources from other critical places to keep Mc Connell safe.

On a more amusing note: a judge has ruled that Trump can't block his critics on Twitter.
