Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Oh yeah,I heard about that, saw headlines everywhere about Antifa attacking a conserative blogger named Andy Ngo,they've been called 'the real fascists' in one headline I'm looking at
They're not exactly doing anything to prove they're not thugs though and thats the problem, they give the left wing a bad name through their reckless actions
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverThe headlines would have you believe they actually assaulted him, which is what's important here as the headlines are what people are going to hear
The thing with throwing milkshakes at politicians is that it's all fun and games until their over zealous bodyguards open fire,I mean that would certainly happen if it was the President for example,or worse
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverAssault, eh? Getting a milkshake-induced dry-cleaning bill is no more "assault" than getting egged or rotten-tomatoed is.
In fact, it's arguably less so: broken egg shell shrapnel can cause anybody within range some damage, and enough rotten tomatoes are certainly not healthy to prepare.
The worst a single milkshake grenade can do is... if you ingest it and you happen to be lactose intolerant. Maybe sting your eyes a bit if you were slow to react. Or, give you long term weight gain, but that's a bit more voluntary. Heck, it isn't even as much of a slimy trip hazard as a bushel of rotten veg splatting everywhere, and the plastic containers don't shatter the way eggs do.
The environment won't be happy about the plastic, but that's not assault.
Milkshakes certainly beat getting bricked, which is a much more real form of bodily assault.
Nah, it's the same old complaint of the bully when somebody attacks their ego, which they mistake to be their dignity.

Oh no. A formal complaint. That'll teach the dude who abandoned his job and threatened to murder law enforcement officers.

The Oathkeepers are now a viable political force.

Okay, while I find this as underwhelming as the next guy, the weren't ebing held at "literal gunpoint" because no actual militia was mobilized. IIRC all that happened was Bobquist or whatever his name is said "just try to catch me coppers, I'll send a militia after ya", a militia decided "hey, he's talking about us!" but didn't actually do anything.

Or, you know, arrest him?

i'm tired, my friendFor reference:
Threats from militia provoke shutdown at Oregon capitol, a day after GOP lawmakers fled
.
State Senate President Peter Courtney (D) told his colleagues on Friday that Oregon State Police had informed him there was a credible threat to him, the rest of the remaining senators — all of whom are Democrats — and the building’s staff.
“It was obviously a credible threat because Sen. Courtney wouldn’t close it down for no reason,” Courtney spokeswoman Carol Currie told The Washington Post.
State police confirmed the danger in an emailed statement.
“We have been monitoring information throughout the day that indicates the safety of legislators, staff and citizen visitors could be compromised if certain threatened behaviors were realized,” wrote Capt. Timothy Fox.
The Right were able to kill a climate change bill despite a Democratic supermajority by pointing guns at the Left and making demands. They completely got away with this and not one person has been arrested.
This is a bad precedent for American democracy.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Let's not mince words, if that GOP member was black and talked like that to law enforcement, he would be dead right now. He shouldn't be shot, but he should be in lockup for a bit after that threat. Don't stand and take it, make sure white Repubs who break the law end up beholden to the law as well.
I can’t think of a solution that wouldn’t backfire in the opposite hands, but it’d be so much easier if dems pulled an equivalent of what McConnel did for Gorsuch’s confirmation and rewrite the rules so that the republicans can’t force a measure to be unable to go through when the dems not only have a majority, but a supermajority.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Expel him and everyone else who ran from the legislator, they effectively quit, if I stopped turning up at work because I didn’t want to do my job I’d be fired.
X9 Yeah, the response to credible threats like that shouldn’t be to back down, it should be to declare a state of emergency and mobilise the national guard.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran... Can a senator actually be expelled?
On the subject of bringing in the National Guard, I am reminded of Eisenhower's executive order 10730 and mobilizing the 101st Airborne during the Little Rock Nine crisis

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. My point is, I imagine making an official complaint is the first step toward taking more action. Ideally. Having a paper trail to mark the incident is one way to keep them from Ain't No Rule-ing their way out of consequences for this.
It's been fun.

During some disorder in Portland over the weekend Posobiec started screaming about how the leftist crowd was mixing quick-drying cement into the milkshakes they were throwing to make them into weapons.
Problem is that cement plus sugar equals no setting.
"Yup. That tasted purple."
