Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So I've done a bit of digging into where the support for Gabbard is coming from, and the right really does adore her. I was watching the Daily Show's coverage of the debates, and most of the comments are about how Gabbard was supposedly done dirty.
Which leads me to wonder if Yang's base comprises of, to some extent, the same demographic, because I saw so many comments saying the same about him (and Bernie but, well, stans gonna stan), and the whole thing just reeks of "narrative" to me, and this kind of "our guy is being shafted!!!!!" story is a favorite of the right. So just who makes up the "Yang Gang"?

i'm tired, my friendPeople on twitter, the problem is that it’s impossible to tell if people on twitter are real people, trolls, right wingers running fake accounts, bots or Russian intelligence operatives.
Though I’d note with Yang there seems to be less of a reason for the right to push him, there is liable to be some push for general reasons (causing division) and because they think universal basic income would tank him at an election, but he’s not Gabbard (a homophobe pushing dictator apologia).
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran
Well, if you find Mother Jones trustworthy, Yang apparently has a significant alt-right following
despite Yang himself being a leftist. So it's most likely they are real people, just real people used to controlling the conservation and artificially inflating their numbers.
I would assume so, since given your linked article (and others that IIRC share similar observations on Yang's base).
My take: The thing is Yang is a Single Issue candidate whose Single Issue is something that has some bipartisan appeal to voters, while being distanced from say, the rights of minorities. That was the same issue that made Sanders the favorite candidate of image board trolls, advocating for economic boons (free college, medicare for all) and not for minority rights (which isn't helped by Sanders' history of racism). Ultimately the reason from his support is that their policies, without the right oversight could easily be twisted into whites-only socialism, a form of "socialism" more easily palatable to the right-wing for obvious reasons.
On that note Vox also has an article on Yang and his base
.
EDIT: I don't want to say that economic boons and minority rights are mutually exclusive. I just want to point out that those campaign for the former only tend to be more shall we say susceptible to far-right support. As such Single Issue candidates are in a vulnerable position in this regard.

New Press Secretary, Stephanie Grisham, gets in a scuffle with North Korean Guards who were denying the White House Press Pool the ability to cover Pres. Donald Trump and N. Korea's Dictator, Kim Jong-Un, meeting
. Grisham's actions were able to get the Press Pool to where Trump and Kim were. She was bruised in the scuffle, but otherwise no injuries have been reported.
This is interesting; I had heard Grisham was essentially a Far-Right Troll, but to actively fight highly armed guards to get people from CNN into the same room as Trump and Kim is very brave of her, and something I couldn't see Sanders or Spicer do. It's definitely too early to applaud her as a protector of Freedom of the Press, but I certainly can applaud this action.

Sanders was not even remotely the favorite of image board trolls (albeit more liked than Clinton, obviously). A more comparable phenomenon to Yang on that front would be Ron Paul.
That said, any image board trolls that did push for Sanders probably jumped ship to Yang precisely for those reasons, because now Sanders has been co-opted by the SJ Ws or some nonsense.

It also helps that Yang has come out against Identity politics and suggested it's divisive and election losing
.
I would in no way be surprised if the far-right support for him is entirely genuine.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangBiden is hitting more and more potholes
, including this gem regarding Harris's demolition of him during the debate.
Society Marches On. Also Sanders, trotting out that he marched with MLK and went to jail for sit-ins, and a lifetime of that and more like it wouldn't necessarily keep him from being woefully out-of-touch with contemporary race issues.
How do you keep blacks out of an MBI? (Obvious answer: Bar convicted felons from receiving.)
True. Though I'm really not seeing it as likely.
An MBI is really going to kick the bottom out of the part-time job dance (on the employers' part, not recipients'), where workers on the cheap end of the labor pool are forced to hustle for multiple part-time jobs, because employers refuse to hire full-timers because full-time employees have a right to benefits and overtime. A basic income means that you can say "fuck that" to any combination of jobs that demands 60-80 hours with no overtime pay or benefits. Employees being able to walk out, and being able to support themselves on an MBI while they fight employers who engage in unfair labor practices, are McWalMart's nightmare.
That bottom end is disproportionately nonwhite, and even more disproportionately women - particularly single mothers. It's not quite the same problem that rural white guys face.

GOP Oregon lawmaker who threatened police during climate bill boycott hit with formal complaint – A Republican Oregon state senator is facing a formal complaint after he threatened state police following GOP lawmakers' decision to boycott a vote on a climate change bill.

From the Hill article:
State Sen. Brian Boquist (R) was hit with the complaint Saturday for suggesting earlier this month that he would shoot state troopers sent by Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D) to round up lawmakers who had skipped out on the vote.
State Sen. Floyd Prozanski (D), chairman of the Senate Special Committee on Conduct, told Oregon Public Broadcasting on Saturday that he had filed a formal complaint against Boquist, adding that a hearing would be held early next month, according to The Associated Press.
He did not offer details or indicate what degree of punishment Boquist could face.
“I will not make any comments as to what’s alleged or what’s in the report because it is pending before the committee,” Prozanski told the news outlet. “As the chair, I do not believe it’s appropriate for me to make comment until we, as a full committee, take what actions we’re going to take.”
