Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Stupid knows no end but the thing about anti-vaxxers is that when a rich kid falls prey to measles, their family can afford to have it treated. The poor people and the people around that have been infected don't.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Climate denial, fake economics (Marxism isn't fake economics, before anyone raises their handnote - I'm talking Austrians), and before then, "tobacco isn't addictive" were all firmly right-wing.
"Coincidentally," these lies were all backed by rows of paid scientists and think-tanks fed by corporate money. There isn't a huge pipeline of corporate money (though there's obviously some individual rich loonies) funding antivaxxism. Antivaxxers survive despite a lack of funding and of any kind of respectability.
Trump’s making a speech in Osaka
Some highlights:
- Hates NAFTA, happy that the new agreement to replace it will work with both Canada/Mexico.
- Hates WTO.
- No additional tariffs to China. Happy that the farmers and manufacturers are being helped with China buying agricultural products.
- Mentions possibility of adding a new treaty to Japan regarding exports.
- Says market went crazy after he got elected. Blue collar workers benefit from tax cuts he implemented.
- Will head to Seoul to meet/not meet KJU at the DMZ. Doesn’t mind meeting again. Mentions that he follows his twitter.
- He mentions that negotiations will continue with regards to Huawei. Plans to pursue it again. Not talking about the extradition of Meng yet.
- For Huawei, the ban doesn’t cover tech companies that don’t endanger American national security.
- Doesn’t see an issue with Chinese students having a hard time studying in America with a student visa. Does talk about the issue of foreign students leaving even if they do well in classes and wants them to stay and work in the US.
- Says America is committed to defend Japan. Although if America itself is attacked, Trump says it’s one-sided.
- He mentions clearly to Putin not to meddle. Someone from RT asked him about it.
- Mentions about Jimmy Carter making comments about him trashing Trump. Also said that he’s the “Forgotten President”.
- Trumps says that his government is not a sucker anymore.
- He mentioned that he made a call to Erdogan and told him not to take out Kurdish militias who helped the coalition.
- Says that the S-400s were purchased by Ankara because Obama wouldn’t allow him to get the Patriot. Talks about how Ankara mentioned that they can’t backtrack on not using it said they paid. Says Turkey is unfairly treated.
- Mentions that he wants to close the loopholes and reform the asylum and refugee system, especially to “help” those who are trying to legally immigrate. Also mentions about the refugees who drowned while trying to gain asylum.
- Says that he hopes that he doesn’t have to use force against Iran. Boasts about new F-35s and Super Hornets. Didn’t give the green light for an air strike.
- About being asked about what will happen if Iran reaches the threshold, he says “we’ll see”.
- Says there’s a good chance that something will work with the Palestinians. Mentions that he wants to try and added that the money flow ended to humanitarian aid to Palestine because of “hostile things” he heard.
- Someone asked FT asked about the national security implications of Huawei. Trump mentioned that he is credited for ZTE being off the Commercial Entity list.
- Not against doing something on climate change, but is against making changes that can force companies out of business. Adds that the US has clean water/air. Mentions his problems with wind/solar power for, power plants, because they can die if they’re not being used. Doesn’t want to subside things that can be avoided...
- He was asked about the crisis in Venezuela. Says it can be a ghost town. Says that it’s a bad example of “socialism”.
- Journalists point out the question on whether Kashoggi was raised to MBS. Says he did even though CIA mentioned that he’s got a lot of benefit to gain. Doesn’t want to comment about it, talking about classified, but can declassify it and makes a quick jab about Hillary. Mentions that Saudis are big investors.
- He was asked if liberalism is dead. Mentions LA as an example.
What I don’t like about Trump is that he wants everything on his terms. Such a bully.

He is a bully, and that's what some of his supporters like about him. They see him reflecting that aspect of themselves back at them.
I wonder if we'll ever get a Democrat president that will bully Republicans and some Democrats on behalf of the mistreated people in America. Say what we're all thinking, dammit.
Do not obey in advance.
Such a Democrat would alienate most of the Democratic base, who don't have the same desire for an iron-fisted dictator to the other side as the Republicans do.
Myself, I hold to Machiavelli's rule. We can't simply destroy Republican resistance, so there's no value in trying to bully them and be nasty to them.
From the hullabaloo lately, all you need to do to bully the Rs is ban people on Twitter who throw white supremacy hate speech around. Then they go "oooo, we're being silenced, social media is so meeeeeean". So if someone campaigns on reducing white supremacy and related domestic terrorism, then maybe that'll count as bullying the Rs?
That's what I'm saying. If all it takes to "bully" Republicans is to advocate for equality on all fronts, then it's time to start collecting some lunch money.
EDIT: Actually, you don't even need to ban them. Richard Spencer whined about censorship on Twitter because they took his blue checkmark away.

i'm tired, my friendFrankly, if anyone deserves some bullying, it's the Republicans. Just make sure to watch collateral damage.
ASAB: All Sponsors Are Bad.RE Oregon: ... Are you fucking kidding me?! Weren't the Dems all up for dragging those scumbag Senators back to the statehouse in handcuffs if necessary?!
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. And now the Republicans and the militias know that next time they want to fuck democracy over, all they need to do is start waving their guns around and the Democrats will immediately cave.
Peace in our fucking time.

Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.Speaking as an Oregonian myself, I’m a little disappointed they backed down (on principle I don’t think this sort of thing should fly). However it is kind of good that there was no violence.
It perhaps would have been for the best if it had, though-this is teaching the militia-types the exact wrong lesson.
Leviticus 19:34

One thing here: is poor people or rich people more subseptable on anti-vaxxer conspiracies? I always see the movement as kinda middle class to rich class excentrcity and being protect by consequence thing but I dont know how much that is true.
