Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

this is more than just a mistake. This is a huge loss. She’s allowing it so long as mike pence notifies them about the deaths of children. There’s no change to their conditions whatsoever.
I haven't looked at the story in-depth yet, but I did see it mentioned the bill passed the Senate with 86 votes, so she didn't have much in the way of leverage on this one.
also, regarding the politico link. Good God that is a clickbaity headline ("House clears border aid bill after Pelosi bows to Mc Connell")

The existence of a mutiny is generally a strong indicator that a failure of leadership has occurred.
Blame is not binary. They can suck for mutinying at the same time that she sucks for failing to keep her people from voting for concentration camps. Leaders are accountable for the actions of those beneath them.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Are you serious?! First she dissents against the consensus that Trump should be impeach, now this? Is she actively working against her party?
Forgive me, but why would Pelosi do such a thing?

@Tobias, blame might not be binary, but fruitpork certainly poised it as if it was. And as we've gone over several times the parties don't really have much effective power to make members do anything, I can't help but think that detracts blame from her.
It's a position in which Republicans just all falling in line, and putting party before everything else works to their advantage because it makes it much easier for them to crush dissent (I'd assume, anyway).

As much as I hate the circumstances, McConnell does have the kind of power to be the one to get the final say. So I don’t entirely blame Pelosi, but I do blame every single citizen who voted for republican senators.
My musician pageParty leaders in the US have way less institutional authority to force their caucuses to vote a certain way. If a Democrat wanted to vote here and now for the Wall, there’s literally nothing Pelosi or any Democratic chief can do until they are empowered to compel conformity. And this passed overwhelmingly in the Senate. There was nothing to be done here.
It’s as if this thread forgets the various and sundry structural weaknesses of the American system whenever something goes wrong.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."@Morning Star: She got a ton of democrats elected to the house by directing their messaging onto the right issues, plus, there is no consensus on impeachment, as evidenced by this very thread. This ditzy, caving Pelosi caricature is nonsensical.
Life is unfair...Onto other topics:
- Raverly, a popular knitting site
had banned Trump support (and likely most pro-alt-right content by extension), a move that seems to garnered widespread support among the knitting community. RPG.net preceded Raverly in this move for similar reasons. Also mentioned is the role Knitting had in political movements and its use as a medium.
- An article explains
that Trump isn't a Final Boss that would ensure peace on earth once defeated. Going into detail on the recently discussed ruling in favor on gerrymandering, and the ideology that Republicans knows best, and the related drift towards Republicans being hostile to democracy.
- Twitter
had decided to hide Trump's tweets behind a new notice.
- Trump threatens to delays census
, causing Democrats to try brainstorming a response.
- Rodger Stone
is accused of violating gag order by using social media. He defends it citing of course "free speech".

Sex predators may be icky, but they're a group who actually need their rights defended more than most, because even once they've served their sentence, they're still faced with draconian, illegal and/or impossible legal sanctions (like an entire town that was covered by sex-offender free school zones) that are officially not even punishments. And, of course, nobody wants to be the one in the room saying "hey, we need to find out how to reintegrate sex offenders into our society once we can't legally hold them in prison anymore."
So yeah, defending a sex predator whose rights were being violated was the right thing to do.
