Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Warren and Castro did best IMO. De Blasio is a filthy hypocrite if you check his record against what he said; NYC twitter was... not pleased. Gabbard (did you know she’s a veteran??? She only mentioned it in EVERY response), Ryan, and Delaney annoyed me the most.
EDIT: off the top of my head, he kept bringing up his black son when he STILL has done very little to reduce racism in the NYPD.
Eric Garner was on his watch.

Eh, Gabbard could easily see a bump considering the tensions with Iran and Russia. Her military cred would do her a lot of good in light of that, and I'm sure she and/or her team knows it. She seemed to be pretty well focused when it was her turn to speak, and I think Klobuchar was the only woman up there that was (consistently) jostling for a chance to speak before being called on - Deblasio was the worst of the bunch when it came to that, though, with Delaney not far after him.
It's understandable, I admit, but still not the best look.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Apparently, Gabbard's been getting a lot of search traffic - moreso than everyone else, in fact.
That said, who knows what they'll think of what they find, and I personally don't think she was invigorating in the same way that Warren, Castro and Booker were, so we'll see what happens there.
I'm curious to see what will happen with Buttigieg tomorrow. I fully expect the police shooting in South Bend to come up, and I wonder how exactly he'll respond.

Oh God! Natural light!I hope that is the last I see of Gabbard. I cannot abide someone who abides evil for the sake of selfish peace only for the US, damn everything else. One can get out of stupid wars without cheerleading the likes of Assad.
My winners, in no order: Castro, Booker, Klobuchar, Warren, Inslee.
Castro because he took the best advantage of the platform and came off as competent, compassionate, and charismatic. Warren was fine, but she kinda petered out toward the end, but she did enough not to hurt herself. Klobuchar was generally okay as a bearer of the moderates, but no break out moments other than calling out Inslee. Some good zingers. Booker was going very much by the Obama playbook and he did it well. Inslee was simply a surprise for actually having positions on issues that weren't climate change.
Losers:
Gabbard for reasons already stated. Delaney for having no charisma, didn't seem to pay attention to the moderators questions, and being well...a bit thirsty. de Blasio came off like a raging jackass. Ryan was woefully unprepared for anything beyond workers rights. He lost to friggin Gabbard of all people. Man sounded like a moron at times. Beto. Ohh dearrr goddd. This is what happens when hype goes out of control. Dude did not prove himself tonight. He needs to step aside and run for Senate while he still has likeability on his side.
Gabbard did better than I expected. Beto did a lot worse than I expected for that matter. The first hour he basically floundered and lost his spotlight to De Blasio and then they both lost it to Delaney of all people.
Warren was the most solid, naturally. Booker and Klobacher really showed their chops.
I was very pleasantly surprised by Castro. I've listened to interviews with him a few times and he never really sounded confident or was concrete about his policies. Either I just got the few crummy interviews or he has really stepped up his game because he took that high position I was expected to go to Beto at the end.
Maddow was a better moderator but to be honest I thought Lester Holt had better questions.
EDIT-
As for Warren, I would have liked to see a real answer on Mc Connell and also an answer of some kind on Iran.

I thought her answer on Mc Connell was fine. She can’t kick him out of the Senate, so basically sustained furious public pressure is the only option if we don’t get the Senate.
But that doesn't work on Mc Connell. Either she calls out this fact that he is a more difficult obstacle than Trump himself, or call out the republicans of the senate in general. Sidestepping it doesn't come off great, just as Delaney's blind optimism doesn't.
I missed half of this, so I'm playing catch up...
I'd concur with the others here and say that Castro, Warren, and Booker stood out the most (Klobuchar got in a few good lines in as much as I disagree with her). Booker especially gets points in my book for specifically calling out (what else? I'm rather predictable) the lack of focus on Trans POC being murdered. So, although he's not my favorite candidate, he's certainly got my attention now.
The one thing of note I saw from Inslee though, he kinda acted like an arrogant jerk before Klobuchar gave on of my favorite zingers I've seen since at least 2016. Which is a shame, I was kinda hoping he'd bring some attention to climate change issues.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerTulsi is currently live with Breitbart.
What the fuck?!?!?

I admittedly checked out about halfway through, but I think I got a feel for everyone. For the ones who left a distinct impression one way or the other, O'Rourke seemed the most "blah" to me.
But that's of the ones who were even distinct to begin with.
