Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Like, yes, the Democratic Party (both individual states, and federal) should take more in investing in who members are actually interested in, but also, I can't help but judge people for not voting because of lack of enthusiasm, especially with the situation actually being what it is.
Like, there's no part of the equation here that comes out looking totally blameless.
Sure, but for me at least, the thing about base enthusiasm is that it matters from a strictly practical perspective.
As someone who views Biden as unquestionably better than Trump, I certainly view with hostility the position that the latter winning doesn't matter but just because it's ugly doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
So the fact it's a bad look is true but irrelevant.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangWin what? The nomination sure, but the primary race is about more than just the nomination and due to deal making and delegate variation there were still a ton of votes issues that by staying in Bernie had a chance to win.
Remember the primary isn’t a strait up vote for the candidate, it’s several small election to pick delegates who do a bunch of thing, the big one being selecting the candidate but there are other things delegates vote on and those thing matter.

The “it was rigged” lie is pretty standard for Bernie, but be angry at that and not the fake shit the Vox ‘reporter’ is trying to drum up with a doctored transcript.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranAnd here's a choice quote from the incoming CBP head:
And just last week, Morgan vowed to enforce Trump’s plan, which has since been delayed, to ramp up arrests and deportations of families that have entered the country and had their asylum requests denied.
“If you come here with a child, that’s a passport in the United States,” Morgan said on the PBS News Hour. “Nothing happens to you. That’s a slippery slope, and no integrity in the system, and the rule of law is being eroded if we don’t apply consequences.”

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"If Hillary didn’t have a big enough lead to win with all super delegates supporting her opponent than she hadn’t mathematically won yet, and again even once that race was over (and I agree that the end of the presidential primary showed that Bernie wanted to be the nominee whatever and didn’t care about playing dirty with super delegates) there were good reasons to campaign, because for some stupid reason the convention delegate selection is pared with the nominee selection.
The two should be split, have delegates be selected internally by district party groups and have the nominee selection just be a raw popular vote (if need be a staggered one) with transferable vote.
Paring the leader selection and the delegate selection is just weird, and I’ve voted in internal leadership election where one person can get five votes that all carry different weight.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThe_Donald subreddit has been quarantined by Reddit moderators over repeated rule violations.
The link is a direct link to the quarantine on the subreddit, but since you can't get to it, here's what was written:
We want to let you know that your community has been quarantined, as outlined in Reddit’s Content Policy.
The reason for the quarantine is that over the last few months we have observed repeated rule-breaking behavior in your community and an over-reliance on Reddit admins to manage users and remove posts that violate our content policy, including content that encourages or incites violence. Most recently, we have observed this behavior in the form of encouragement of violence towards police officers and public officials in Oregon. This is not only in violation of our site-wide policies, but also your own community rules (rule #9). You can find violating content that we removed in your mod logs.
As we have discussed in the past, and as detailed in our content policy and moderator guidelines, we expect you to enforce against rule-breaking content. You’ve made progress over the last year, but we continue to observe and take action on a disproportionate amount of rule-breaking behavior in this community. We recognize that you do remove posts that are reported, but we are troubled that violent content more often goes unreported, and worse, is upvoted.
User reports and downvotes are an essential way that Reddit functions to moderate content. Limiting or prohibiting them prevents you from moderating your community effectively. Because of this, we are disabling your custom styling in order to restore these essential functions.
As stated in our Moderator Guidelines, our goal is to keep the platform alive and vibrant, as well as to ensure your community can reach people interested in it. Accordingly, here are the specific terms of the quarantine and the next steps we are asking from you as a mod team to resolve this situation.
Quarantine terms:
Visitors to this community will see a warning that requires users to explicitly opt-in to viewing it. This messaging reminds users of the importance of reporting rule-breaking content.
Custom styling has been disabled to restore the report and downvote buttons.
We hope both these changes will help improve the signal around rule-breaking content and improve your ability to effectively address it.
Next steps:
You unambiguously communicate to your subscribers that violent content is unacceptable.
You communicate to your users that reporting is a core function of Reddit and is essential to maintaining the health and viability of the community.
Following that, we will continue to monitor your community, specifically looking at report rate and for patterns of rule-violating content.
Undertake any other actions you determine to reduce the amount of rule-violating content.
Following these changes, we will consider an appeal to lift the quarantine, in line with the process outlined here.
We hope that this process provides a viable way forward to restore the health of the community. However, if this situation continues to escalate, we will explore further actions, including the possible banning of your community.
Please confirm that you have received and understand this message.
This is gonna be fun to watch.
Also the owners of reddit have confirmed that they have slightly more humanity than the people behind Twitter or Facebook.
Edit: And it’s confirmed to be only slightly more humanity, as this seems to be in response to the press running stories about how reddit allows threats of violence as longs as the threats are posted on the Trump sub, also a possible attempt to mobilise armed groups in Oregon.

"What do we say to the God of Death? Sean Bean is over there."Eh, "Quarantine" isn't exactly that strict - it's just a Content Warning about what the visitor will see on that forum, from what I've read.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Sure but it blocks it from appearing on the rest of the site and think will ever eventually result in a full ban.
Apparently it’s specifically about violence against cops, basically they were making lots of threats against law enforcement in Oregon, there’s now press coverage and reddit is doing damage control before a cop gets shot and they get blamed for providing a planning space for domestic terrorism against law enforcement.
Edit: Actually I’m seeing that you need a full reddit account with a verified email to access it, so people just browsing the website can’t see it at all, you have to be logged into a register account with a real email address.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThat and apparently the subreddit was using custom styling to bury the reporting and downvoting functions, making it harder for users to report content for moderation. Not cool, guys.
I will stand back and enjoy their discomfiture.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Fuck me does Trump have a fragile ego, and the GOP is becoming more and more blatant in kowtowing to his Cult of Personality.
A friend on Facebook linked to this survey
- 10 questions, of which the options for each one is "President Trump" or:
- 1) "A MS-13 Loving Democrat"
- 2) A Corrupt Democrat
- 3) A Radical Socialist Democrat
- 4) A Lying Democrat
- 5) A High Tax Democrat
- 6) A Sleazy Democrat
- 7) A Lyin’ Democrat
- 8) A Low Energy Democrat
- 9) A Low IQ Democrat
- 10) A Radical Socialist Democrat
Seriously - did they let Trump personally write this one, or what?
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"And separate post because god fucking damn this asshole should be nowhere near a position of authority:
In an interview with Tucker Carlson, Mark Morgan, the incoming CBP chief
, said - “I’ve been to detention facilities where I’ve walked up to these individuals that are so-called minors, 17 or under,” Morgan said on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” in January. “I’ve looked at them and I’ve looked at their eyes, Tucker — and I’ve said that is a soon-to-be MS-13 gang member. It’s unequivocal.”
Honestly, Reddit has too many other problems for me to get anything more than amusement out of this. But, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get that much from it.
My musician page

Well in that case I will dial down from infuriated to annoyed at Bernie for the evening
