The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I admit to being a bit confused as to why black voters are angry at Pete specifically (besides firing the old police sergeant). Is it inaction? Just plain not doing anything about racialized police violence? I could understand if so.

The short version is that they've believed he's neglected his duties as Mayor to chase the Presidency while acting like a reformer when the police department's brutality has festered under his reign. He also tried to play the incident down and then use it for his campaign, which infuriated constituents.

From what little has been said about the city he's mayor of here, that sounds about right.

It's also with the implicit assumption Mayor Pete has been portraying himself as a new and awesome candidate who will pay attention to minority issues when as mayor...he hasn't.

At one point he was compared to Beto O'Roarke for being a candidate who looks good but stands for nothing.

Because the news has been even more awful than usual, here’s a link to a Warren tweet with a great photo of a Very Good Boy (her golden retriever, Bailey).

I just told my mother about the concentration camps and she was (unsurprisingly) horrified. I've asked her to ask her coworkers if they've heard/what they think about it. Apparently most of them (they're mostly white women) voted for Trump, so that should be interesting.

[up][up]TBH, I am kind of jaded about the whole “grab a beer with them” logic.

But then, I have been very open about how much I dislike populism in general, so that should be expected.

That is so sweet.

Hopefully sometime next year Bailey will be set to reside in the West Wing grin

That will be interesting, regardless if they show horror or display rationalizations it should be illuminating.

There was a reason Trump backed away on family separation and it wasn't democrats.

It was his own base being troubled by it.

I've been seeing some truly vile, racist shit on Twitter recently. I know, I know, water is wet, but it's escalating in a way I've never seen before. People actively cheering the refugee children being abused and neglected in Trump's concentration camps is old hat by now, but there's also a lot of hate toward Native Americans? I saw like five extreme-right asshats saying "Durr hurr, ~ * Europeans * ~ are just better at conquering, we owe the Natives nothing" today. Reported a couple. Shit-talked one of them pretty hard, but then I worried about being banned/suspended and deleted the tweets. Now I feel like a coward.

Just because it's nothing new doesn't mean it's not incredibly disheartening. I don't even know if all our efforts to fight back have accomplished anything. There was a post in one of the usual extreme-right haunts saying that the pro-trans Gillette ad meant the right was losing and couldn't recover, so I take some solace in knowing those villains are feeling pretty shitty too, but you'd think we'd have had a big moment of catharsis by now.

I dunno, Trump being subpoena'd and taken to court? An actual push for impeachment that's not just the House blowing air up our asses? Someone taking the recent rape allegation against him seriously? Like, just something to at least hint that things are going to get better.

Don't pin your satisfaction on any of these people seeing justice or karma catching up to them, you'll be disappointed.

Impeachment is literally 100% impossible no matter what we do and so is taking Trump to court.

You should focus more on how to help people and preventing these things in the future than hoping Trump and his people are punished because bluntly they're probably going to walk away from all this.

Trump is being sued plenty of times and his followers can and have been put in court.

The call for impeachment is not so that the King may be killed, it is to let the king know that he is mortal.

Those two things are not impossible, give me a break. Yes, helping the victims is imperative, but if you're starting from the assumption that the bad guys are going to get away with everything, then you've already surrendered.

No, impeachment is genuinely impossible. We don't have the votes and never will during his presidency.

Like people need to get that through their heads in any discussion about impeachment. It will fail. Period.

Oh really when?
