Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This all seems like part of Biden's whole strategy of appealing to people nostalgic for a time when the Democratic Party and the GOP weren't so polarized.
Unfortunately, I can see this being attractive to a lot of people. Especially those who still aren't committed to either party.
Disgusted, but not surprisedSpeaking of Buttigieg scandal, cops shot/killed a Black man in South Bend this week. Pete... isn’t handling it very well.
The protester told Buttigieg "You are truly running for president and you want black people to vote for you. You [are] running for president and you want black people to vote for you — that's not going to happen. That's not going to happen. That's not going to happen."
"I'm not asking for your vote," Buttigieg responded. "I will promise that there will be a review to make sure that there is no racism on this department and that it will be independent."
...
South Bend has been shaken by the shooting, and Buttigieg has spent much of the week off the campaign trail and in the city. On Saturday, Eric Logan, a 53-year-old black man, was shot and killed by South Bend Police Sgt. Ryan O'Neill.
Prosecutors say O'Neill was responding to a report of a person breaking into cars when he encountered Logan in an apartment building parking lot. O'Neill told authorities that Logan had a knife, and when he refused the officer's orders to drop it, O'Neill opened fire, shooting Logan in the stomach. Another officer took Logan in a squad car to the hospital, where he later died.
Earlier this week, Buttigieg said he would reaffirm the South Bend Police Department's policy on body cameras. He left the campaign trail for part of the week to handle the situation in South Bend, and canceled plans to attend South Carolina Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn's annual fish fry.
Buttigieg said Friday "I do not have evidence that there has been discipline for racist behavior."
That made me think of Mad TV's "Smith Comma John: Human Being for President
" sketch.
Well, I think it’s more a reflection of how closely scrutinized verbiage and syntax have become. It becomes harder to craft a natural sounding sentence when you’re a Slave to PR. Not even political skill can carry you that far.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Oh hey, Oregon's capitol shut down today
over those militia threats. Given one of the militias (the 3%ers) took part in the Yee-hawd with the wildlife refuge, I can't exactly blame them for being cautious.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"The issue people are primarily taking is that the camps aren't extermination camps, they're concentration camps sure, but until people see piles of bodies I don't think they're going to change their minds
China is also running concentration camps under the guise of "reeducation camps" and people outside readily accept that they are concentration camps, the reason is that China authoritarian rule makes it believable
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverIn a strictly grammatical terms, there's no other way to define them other than concentration camps. They're camps where people are concentrated under similar logistics as the previous concentration camps for Asians in America, for the Natives also in America, for the Africans in the Boer War, and yes, for the targets of Nazi Germany in WWII.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."
Africans in the Boer War? You mean the British round-up of Boer civilians that went very badly (mainly because they acted first, and then the sheer scope of the logistics and expense involved clobbered everybody with the consequences — it was only upon rounding people up that the British kind of had to face some issues they'd been ignoring: they hadn't known the actual population numbers, had constantly underestimated how many Boers there actually were and had just destroyed the local food supply network by rounding up most of the farmers and taking them off their farms, since wives and kids were also important farmhands and produce sellers/ suppliers)?
Or what happened in German Southwest Africa soon afterward? Those were concentration and deliberate extermination camps for the Nama and Herero peoples. Early draughts for what Germany did later. :/

I might have conflated the two by accident, but I was thinking of the first. In either case, I suppose the point is made.

"All you Fascists bound to lose."They are concentration camps. There's no dodging this. Republicans are acting all offended for their Fox News viewers, because their political strategy involves dehumanizing immigrants and convincing people that they deserve whatever treatment they get. If anyone in that circle of propaganda actually realizes what's going on, they'll be lost, so they must keep the information bubble as closed as possible.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Reading about the close call with the possibility of right-wing militias openly clashing with LEOs, I can't help the feeling that a bloody clash will happen sooner or later. It's not like they're going to willingly let go of their sacred Second Amendment "rights", you know.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.

Successful politicians are good at playing the room, and that's something today's age of every statement being instantaneously public has found difficult to reconcile.
As far as Biden's views towards the wealthy, this is probably the most truthful he's being. But if he's saying their standard of living wouldn't change, there are a number of possibilities that make that statement true — the average billionaire would have to be taxed into oblivion to actually degrade their standard of living while disproportionately improving the lives of the poor. That's not what he's literally saying, but I'm sure the spin doctors will use that interpretation in an attempt to smooth over the blowback.
