The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

...

...

Are you kidding me?!?!? Maybe because victims of sexual assault don’t owe anyone a convenient timeline for grappling with their trauma????

In her own words from the article you linked:

Carroll wrote that she hasn't come forward with her allegations until now because she feared Trump's wrath and the pain of being called a liar.

"Receiving death threats, being driven from my home, being dismissed, being dragged through the mud, and joining the 15 women who've come forward with credible stories about how the man grabbed, badgered, belittled, mauled, molested, and assaulted them, only to see the man turn it around, deny, threaten, and attack them, never sounded like much fun," she wrote. "Also, I am a coward."

Yeah, that's a super problematic and frankly thoughtless thing to say.

Trump's accusers didn't change anything, no reason for her to subject herself to that unless she really wants to.

She is an incredibly brave woman and I hope she gains something from this.

Yeah...just wanting to point out that, aside from trauma, other reasons why victims of sexual assault don’t come forward on a particular timeline and report is because they’re afraid of people either not believing them, flipping the script to blame them for what happened, or the backlash by people jumping to defend said sexual assailant from the accusations, often by smearing the victim.

We’ve advanced since the 90s in our conversation about sexual assault, when the discourse was even worse, but unfortunately we still exist in the “she was asking for it/lying to get attention and make him look bad” days.

I mean, after what happened to Anita Hill and Christine Blasey Ford I would think it’s blatantly obvious that coming forward is a quick way to get death threats.

...I just want to point out that I did say "sadly", as in I regretted having that thought, but was still unable to help but have that thought. Please don't jump down my throat for acknowledging stuff like that.

[down]

Exactly. On the extreme end of that, we had the controversy with Liam Neeson a few months ago (thought it feels like longer), in which he related having had revenge fantasies while carrying a gun and wanting to shoot a black guy that messed with him as payback for a friend of his who'd been raped. He related the story to acknowledge his own bias and racism, and people dogpiled on him for having the thought to begin with, even when he acknowledged that it was an awful thing and that it was fortunate that nothing even worse happened as a result of that thought process.

And beyond that, I'll admit that part of my skepticism is that the accusation is part of an excerpt from a new book she's got coming out - which, much like Woolf's book that makes allegations against Trump, I can't help but look at a bit cynically.

I feel like a common response might be "you didn't have to tell us you had the thought", but then again, it's not like we all don't have thoughts we regret or are ashamed of sometimes.

There's a rather amazing story I heard out of Oregon.

So their Senate was voting on a Climate bill and Republicans in their cowardice fled the capital to block the vote.

So the Democratic governor decided to send state police to drag them back.

God, that is so wonderful. She's my hero.

Sometimes it's better to keep thoughts like that to yourself, you know?

Anyway, apparently Republicans and Democrats have voted to block an 'emergency' arms deal to Saudi Arabia, naturally the senate is NOT happy about Trump's attempt go around them every time he wants something.Though the article notes Trump can always veto the motion

I believe Liam Neeson was well-intentioned there but it's hard not to think differently of the man when you find out he considered a hate crime. Quite a few of his black fans agreed.

Though the governor actively sending the police after the runaway senators is a new development, I think.

So 538 did an article about Biden latest set of gaffs where he spoke positively about his friendships with some past racist democrat senators, they’re not sure that the backlash will breakdown along racial lines. Basically whit democrats are close to as sensitive on racial issues as black democrats, while younger democrats split hard from older democrats regardless of race.

Biden’s support base is older African Americans, many of whom are heavily focused on electability, where Biden’s ability to make friends with racists could be seen as a strength, so this may not seriously hurt him with them, while younger democrats (both Africana American and white) already aren’t into Biden.

Which means Biden still is the likely winner. Older voters tend to be the more reliable regular voters.

Just to add on to the Oregon Legislative mess, the Republican Senators fleeing from their jobs were offered protection from cops by right wing militias The Oath Keepers and The 3%, but the offer was turned down.

So apparently lawmakers fleeing in protest, and the governor sending state LE after them is just a thing that happens sometimes in Oregon.

Its an extreme form of denying the legislative process, but it's not new. Heck, it's so not new that delegates to a state convention did the same thing to block the ratification of the US Constitution itself.

@Biden: It's not hard to see the pitch he's selling. He managed to get important legislation passed working together with segregationists, so why isn't the same possible with thr GOP? He forgets they're even more rabid and stubborn than the racists.

Life is unfair...

Not to mention more uniformly stubborn - at least with the segregationists, they had other polices that they were willing to compromise on, just not that one.
