Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm not sure if I'd call it populism or not, but I would say the line of reasoning that "we need to stop focusing on identity politics to work on the economy" pretty dangerous. Indeed, my biggest criticism of the left is that it can have a very reductivist view of society and some leftists tend to believe that all problems are really just symptoms wealth inequality. Some even advocate actively ignoring issues like racism altogether. These types don't truly want society to be diverse or tolerant, they simply want it to be flat.
Honestly I'd advise against appealing to racists. It's a faustian bargain that comes back to bite you-once you they become a notable part of your supporters, they really do own stock in your soul and can manipulate you with that.

Replace "racists" with "sexists" or "misogynists" and you have part of why I'm on team Warren, even with the wealth tax issues (another reason being that I'm of the opinion that Silicon Valley is the breeding ground of the new robber-barons).
A Woman, a PoC, or a LGBT person being president would stop that self fulfilling prophecy.

For myself, I am not optimistic about the wealth tax on constitutional grounds: I think it will fail. Warren may be eyeing amendments to make it legitimate; that's even less likely to succeed. It's still worth talking about, though.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Racists and the like are parasites. Don't appeal to them, fight them. Treat them like Mooks, and your life will be a lot easier.
ASAB: All Sponsors Are Bad.It was mentioned on the previous page but a repeal of the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force is actually a reduction of presidential authority. The language in that is what’s allowed US presidents to send the military anywhere so long as they can connect it to terrorism.
The Obama admin in particular pushed that AUMF to its absolute limits.
They should have sent a poet.To be fair, I suspect that the people being polled believe that middle-aged white man might have an easier time getting elected. Perhaps because they saw polls like the one they're being put in front of.
Ah, circular reasoning, got to love it.
In seriousness, I'd actually recommend against a white man. People secretly kind of want minority presidents, because they like writing history. For example, when Obama was running for president, a lot of people were saying "hey man, wouldn't it be cool to see the first black president in our lifetimes?", and even at the time I kind of agreed.
To be fair, I might argue that with Obama the novelty might have worn off, but I still think running a woman or maybe a different ethnic minority might work.
Leviticus 19:34I'd say most people would consider Sanders white. The kind of people who wouldn't, typically have various unsavory views on a lot of things.

I've actually been a bit surprised by that, considering the potential for a "historic" President exists for so many of the candidates, for various reasons, that that angle hasn't been played up more yet. It's still fairly early, obviously, but even so.

"I'll be impressed when we elect an openly atheist President. We are after all one of the least trusted demographics in the USA."
The Religious Left probably made the possibility of that happening near-zero. That faction has basically triangulated atheism back to the margin. It means, for the faithful, The Moral Substitute will always be available.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy.
If you believe racists will only elect X and that the racists are more than the non-racists then you assume you have to cater to racists to win.
