The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well, Trump's right. Fox News is fake news.

Seriously, that's hilarious.

[up]In this case, Trump is right in general, but still wrong about the specific thing he's whining about.

I would say something like "Let them fight," but the MUTO never did anything to be compared to Trump.

Calling something on FOX News "fake news" would normally be fine...except all they did was report polling data.

This reminds me of how Trump actually made the UK's The Sun look good since they called him out on his bullshit.

FOX News is still shit since they have been enabling Trump since day one.

To Trump and his supporters, Shep Smith, Bret Baier, etc. don't belong on Fox News at all, because they burst its viewers out of the HATE DEMOCRATS 24/7/"Take Trump's side on everything" bubble.

"Basically his attorneys argued he was confused and scared and it’s a totally reasonable oopsy. Y’know. Assuming he needs to shoot someone that even all the other cops didn’t think was a threat. Cause that’s not egregious and reckless and the opposite of responsible use of police force and a gun.

"

Did you know how sometimes in cartoon people cluster around themselves in haunted houses expecting a ghost to jump over?.

That is how the police is looking right now with this

"This is the real ugly truth, the base problem with police violence isn’t lack of evidence, if isn’t an unwillingness to prosecute when evidence exists, it’s the fact that a lot of Americans are okay with cops shooting unarmed people who are begging for their lives.

"

To be more especific: there the belief that only bad people get take by the police and if you are a good citizen the police will get you alone, ergo anything bad that happen is a opsy or you really deserved it, no surprising a lot of defense of cop kinda veer into unconfortable territory "do as they said or they will shoot you, end of story"

So, this happened yesterday. (Source is a journalist at The Atlantic)

Tonight at a fundraiser in NYC, Biden recalled serving with a major segregationist Mississippi senator: “I was in a caucus with James O. Eastland ... he never called me boy, he always called me son.” He imitated the drawl. “At least there was some civility. We got things done”

For frame of reference, Eastland was a plantation owner from Mississippi who “employed” dozens of sharecroppers, whose father led lynch mobs, and who according to biographer Robert Caro in a biography of LBJ described

blacks in Montgomery as "slimy, juicy, unbearably stinking niggers... African flesh-eaters", who called on whites to use "guns, bows, and arrows, slingshots and knives... in pursuit of dead niggers".

More on Eastland from an article at Essence, a Black magazine:

Eastland worked closely with the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission, a state-sponsored white terrorist organization that aided and abetted in the assassinations of Black civil rights leaders—and surveilled others, including my grandparents. Yet, he was apparently not only a model of civility for Biden, but a political accomplice.

In asking Eastland to speak on the Senate Floor in favor of his anti-busing bill, Biden wrote the man, who once called Black people “an inferior race,” another note on Aug. 22, 1978, pleading, “I want to personally ask your continued support and alert you to our intentions. Your participation in floor debate would be welcomed.”

Joe Biden can go f*** himself. Jesus Christ.

To add that one last piece of shit to the bonfire, I'm pretty sure a man like that wouldn't have referred to a white man like Biden as "boy" because it was a racially charged term at the time (and still is in some contexts). So if that's Biden's idea of civility...

Biden really does sticking his foot in his mouth, doesn't he?

Hopefully, this will lead to the African-American people who are supporting him to move to Warren.

My question, then, is what did Biden actually accomplish together with segregationists James Eastland and Herman Talmadge? And then, what of their own goals did each of them achieve in the process?

Incidentally, in a "magic wand" poll for the Democratic Primary, Warren came out on top in support at 21%, compared to Sanders' and Biden's 19%, Buttigieg's 13%, and Harris' 12%. For contrast, the same poll that factored in "electability" pegged Biden at 29%, Sanders at 17%, Warren at 16%, Buttigieg at 13%, and Harris at 12%.

Is that a good idea, though? The general impression I've had of Sanders is a Single-Issue Wonk who doesn't really understand his single issue.

[up]Bluntly, given the state of destitution large numbers of Americans live in, the perspective on Sanders from the people who think that the American economy is not "doing good" or "best in the world" but "dramatically failing large numbers of its citizens to life ending levels" it's not actually a choice. It's those two or nothing.

Buttigeig, Harris, and others don't have any economic plans to rectify the issues. They have some economic boost plans but the way they view the problem is fundamentally different than Warren and Sanders.

Sanders plans may not be great but they recognize the issue and even at his worst, they are 1000% better for an attempt to address it than the people who don't recognize there is a problem.

The problem with Sanders is that he seems to believe his economic positions are a panacea that will solve all other issues. It’s standard “whites first” socialism stuff.

Sanders' economic policies are "color blind" which is always an issue but the fact is that they're more or less identically applied to the ACA. The ACA which has saved tens of thousands of lives and saved many Americans from destitution and is an existential threat to Republican ideology.

Its saved also black, Latin, and white lives.

But we don't call that white first politics.

And again, the alternative is nothing that means nothing for minorities. So it's a non-argument.

Here's some very interesting news, Colorado Democrats scrap plans to make election day a holiday, citing unintended consequeunces

So, the Colorado Democrats were going to establish voting days a holiday. But they suddenly decided to scrap those plans. The reason? They realized that such a move would very likely lead to unintended consequences, specifically lower voter turnout. Which may seem counterintuitive but the reason for that is that a national holiday would cover everyone, including the people manning infrastructure critical to electoral politics such as libraries, transit lines, community centers, etc.

This, unsurprisingly, soured the Democrats on the idea.

It's just an interesting example of how common sense things like holidays on the days of elections can have unintended consequences.

Another piece of good news is that while they may have withdrawn the part of the bill which involved making voting days a national holiday they kept the bit removing Columbus Day. So that's one less state paying homage to a genocidal racist.

And again, the alternative is nothing that means nothing for minorities. So it's a non-argument.

No one is arguing against universalist policies, they're disparaging Sanders' low focus on more specifically minority-focused policies.

[up][up] Well, the thing is, they’re not color blind. Or at least, that’s not good enough.

We’ve been over many times in this thread why the “rising tide lifts all boats” theory doesn’t adequately address the problems minorities face. Other forms of inequality aren’t going to magically address themselves after you address economic inequality.

And the alternative is not nothing. There are far better candidates than Sanders.

Yes.

Warren.

None of the others will help millions in utterly fucked situations. The majority proportionately of which who are minorities but who also include vast numbers of destitute whites (who generally voted Clinton but that's another issue).

So it's those two or nobody.

Edit:

And it won't be a panacea and is only the beginning of addressing inequality but that doen't mean it shouldn't be done.
