Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The way I see it, it's less that Alex Jones is himself into that kind of garbage and more that he or a fan of his tried to harass the victims with them as a kind of Shock Site tactic. That's a thing that's been unfortunately known to happen in fandoms to fans of unpopular ship. Either way, whoever's responsible, even if it's not about getting one's rocks off to that it's still reprehensible to share.

Uh, guys?? Are we... not gonna discuss Trump threatening to round up millions of immigrants?!? Reposting from previous page.
Jesus fucking Christ.
Trump threatening mass deportations next week.
Basically announcing kristallnacht on twitter.
“Next week ICE will begin the process of removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States. They will be removed as fast as they come in.”

It is a sad but true fact that there is so much vile, bilious excrement spewing from Trump, the republican party as a whole and their media enablers that even something as horrific as that can be missed in the deluge. And it's not exactly the first time he's made threats like this either
Also M84's signature is once again at play.
(Tangentially the phrase "M84's signature" is well on it's way to becoming its own weird meme internal to the forums).

Yeah, he lacks the power to do that. Deportations go through the courts.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Uh... they go through administrative law judges. Who are part of the executive branch. I took an immigration law class last year, specifically so I would have a better grasp on how the process works and understand what this administration is doing. If Trump tells ICE to ramp up the raids, they will. And then thousands of people will sit in camps for months or years until they can all be processed.
He has shown time and time again that his threats are not just talk, and I’ve seen a lot of immigration rights people, both journalists and activists, freaking out about this. Don’t just brush it aside. These are people’s lives.

Trump likes to make big sweeping announcements because they stroke his ego, but he his record of following through is spotty, at best. It's entirely possible that he's just tossing red meat to his base and nothing will come of it. It's possible that he'll issue orders to the effect of "ramp up enforcement raids!" and nothing will actually change because ICE doesn't have the manpower/funding/legal authority/etc to do what Trump wants. It's possible that enforcement activity will increase, but it will be entirely legal and above board and within his authority, so there's not much anyone can do about it.
I'm not saying "don't worry about it", because it's equally possible that he'll goad ICE into doing things it's not allowed to, or doing things sloppily so legal immigrants are also caught up in it, or doing something like pulling agents away from ports of entry (where they're actually needed) to put them on interior raids (where they're not). All of which should be opposed if and when it happens.
I'm saying don't drive yourself up a wall over one tweet. That's literally why he does it, to draw reactions out of people, both his supporters and his opponents.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. It's possible that enforcement activity will increase, but it will be entirely legal and above board and within his authority, so there's not much anyone can do about it.

Uh. They’ve already held and tried to deport legal immigrants. Multiple times.
And ICE has been doing more raids on completely harmless people for the last couple years.
But again, what is this really? ICE can’t stop people in the street and press them for papers. They aren’t the SA who could bust up Jewish-owned businesses with no fear of retribution. Realistically this is going to be the same enforcement surge we’ve seen dozens of times, just marketed as some brand new special thing by Trump to feed his base.
It’s bad, but it’s the same bad we’ve been having.

They should have sent a poet. Before this goes any further, these things are not mutually exclusive:
A) Trump/the administration poses real and enacted danger to immigrant communities. B) Trump makes assertions of actions without any sort of concrete plan, usually with the immediate consequence of riling up response.
Don't let this devolve into personal swipes at other posters, please, regarding which point they are discussing.
Even if it is not as bad as the worst case scenario, its still really bad.
Remember, even a mild increase would mean ruining a lot of lives. And considering ICE is...ICE, chances are they'll get sloppy.
Which is almost beside the point, even if they somehow missed every legal immigrant and refugee it still would be a bad thing.
Duly noted.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerOh, and Jon Stewart made a guest appearance on Colbert's show to respond to McConnell's dismissiveness.
Best line of the bit - when Mitch brushed off the Congressional absences because they "have a lot of things going on at the same time, and it sounds to me like he is looking for some way to take offense."

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Quick FYI...
Uh. Yeah, they kinda can. It’s a murky area legally but they absolutely do that. See the above link where they basically kidnapped a legal immigrant and held him for over a year.
Edited by wisewillow on Jun 18th 2019 at 7:50:19 AM
It’s not a murky area at all. They can’t do that. That’s why those cases are particularly appalling.
There has to be probable cause for an arrest or enforcement stop, being on the street is not probable cause. You’ll note that the article linked places most of the blame on the databases used to check on citizenship status, when people are being looked in on for whatever reason the database doesn’t always reflect their actual status.

They should have sent a poet.
The legality doesn't matter if ICE just does it anyway.
As wisewillow pointed out, they do, so questions of whether they are allowed to or not is a bit of a moot point. Its already happening.

Well, not really. Being misidentified by an immigration database isn’t the same thing as ICE agents driving around pressing random people for papers.
The situation is bad enough already, let’s not make up new things to worry about.
An arrest based on a mistake isn’t necessarily illegal, even if it never should have happened. It’s worth distinguishing between the two here.

They should have sent a poet. Not going to deny that Trump is a lot of bluster, but there are a lot of red flags he and his cronies are throwing out, this ICE thing and him being traditionally coy about his desire for that “Muslim Registry” he’s talked about for one. Small concessions for bigotry do eventually turn into larger and larger ones when people shrug or pull Like You Would Really Do It on him. I’m not going to pull the most obvious example of that philosophy in action because it’s obvious.
Now Trump isn’t on the level of more hardcore fascists and dictators, of course, but the fact is that conditions for detained people are pretty horrific. Children being torn from their parents, likely never to see them again, dozens of people being crammed into cells much too small to hold them, and now this witch hunt for immigrants that’ll target their homes, places of work, and other public spaces alike.
Luckily there is information circulating on the internet advising people on what their legal rights are and how to handle being approached by ICE. Whether it’s technically legal or not, though, they’ve been doing it, and that’s the issue here. Legality is often irrelevant to Trump and his crew.

For the record, on the Infowars thing, the author of that Twitter thread doesn't think that Jones knew that the child porn was there (though he acknowledges it's possible), since he figured that if that was the case, he never would have given it to the plaintiffs.
