The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

California tries to mandate breach of the seal of the confessional in child abuse cases.

As usual, this is well-intentioned, but a dumb idea - the seal of the sacramental confessional is that entrenched in the dogma of the Church, and there's no way priests are going to obey this.

Isn't this hearsay and thus inadmissible anyway?

Oh wait, no, that would require someone to actually think before proposing this.

Doubt what a priest would hear in the confessional would be inadmissible as witness testimony from the priest. However, as pointed out, no priest worth their holy water is going to break the seal of the Confessional. Not sure if they even have an exception from that in cases of murder.

It also means that no child abuser is going to confess from that point on or anyone who is engaged in criminal activity.

Witness testimony that the man or woman said something.

Not that he saw anything.

[up] True, forgot about that. I was focusing on "if the molester admits having done something in confession, this law would mean the priest would not be able to claim "seal of the confessional" and keep it a secret if called to testify."

About breaking the seal of confessional, would Catholic priests comply the Vatican issue some sort of exemption? Of course, this would entail them actually trying to do something to prevent sexual abuse, which I haven't seen a lot of evidence for thus far.

If we put space colonization before earth sustainability, we may well end up gambling our species' future into trash planethood. As for cancer, I would say that malnutrition, diabetes, heart disease, and infectious diseases, are much more of a priority, in terms of death caused, and effects on quality of life. But cancers are oh so much more dramatic!

I'll even go "too" far and argue this: we're all going to die someday. Who cares how long we live, if we aren't happy?

I get where you're coming from, but arguments like this do not take into account the medical, environmental, and general technical innovations that have resulted from the space program. The desire to explore space is far from the biggest hurdle faced when trying to create healthier, more sustainable societies. And I say this as an environmental scientist.

[up] Well they would need an exemption from the Vatican but of course that begs the question for which sins does the Vatican allow the priest to break the seal, and whether it is only if called to testify or to blow the whistle outright - and if the latter if it would be admissible in court as an accusation.

Religiously, the issue is these people are confessing because of the idea of sincere remorse so it gets into the question of what the obligation of the priest is: 1. Punishment. 2. Prevention of future crimes. 3. Obedience to the law. 4. The soul of the seeker of atonement.

Of course, this would entail them actually trying to do something to prevent sexual abuse, which I haven't seen a lot of evidence for thus far.

While you can certainly criticize Francis' handling of the matter, part of the issue is that he's gotten a lot more push back than anyone could have believed. He actually had the entirety of a country's bishops resign to cover up things.

So a few days ago, I watched a video from Some More News from someone who covered the news when Cracked still made videos.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hx6MgBjR4K0

The basic tl;dr version is that he talks about Joe Biden being a centrist and that he should run as a republican in the GOP as a moderate republican. And I'm just here watching the video, asking myself Is this guy serious??

If he was crazy enough to run in the GOP as a republican, we should all just not vote period. Democrats decided in 2016 that they didn't want Bernie as the president and the base became more broken with Hillary being the primary. Do people really think that he could beat Biden? I'm just going to say it, his ideas aren't realistic and it's the reason why he couldn't beat Hillary in the primaries. It may seem desperate, but so far, no one else is getting the reputation that Biden is getting. He's the best chance democrats and liberals have at beating Trump, but only if he stays where he is and doesn't take the career-ending going republican.

And I'm aware that it's mostly speculation, but do people really want to believe that a fellow republican could run against a republican in office? It's never happened in any presidential race and to me seems like a death sentence in a election.

(I'm not used to posting video links and getting the actual video to play here. I don't use forums too often.)

Check out the most recent ones at the top.

Warren's in single digit territory. Ouch.

I'm hoping she somehow finds a way to at least knock Sanders out of the race. He's just too...divisive of a candidate. Warren at least is a card carrying member of the Democratic Party.

The point is that the data so far seems to not be supporting the notion that Warren's gaining ground. Either that or it's happening very slowly. It also doesn't help that she hasn't gotten any more endorsements in a while. She still has more than Sanders though. And given that Sanders' poll numbers have dropped...those hoping for some kind of epic Biden vs. Warren showdown or something in the primaries' finals might just get it.

It is often said that Third-Way Democrats won "by running as Republicans".

From his record and his behaviour, he would indeed function well in the more centrist wing of the Republican party. Plenty of Republicans are desperate to vote for anything other than Trump.

Right-wingers value loyalty and cohesion. They're not a bickering, fractious coalition like the Left, even though their ideas actually clash immensely and their subgroups have sever conflicts of interest.

It will come as no surprise that Trump has absolutely no understanding of the concept of diplomatic behaviour. The Queen has decades of experience at putting people at their ease and making them feel welcome because that's her job. No-one in Britain thinks she behaved any differently with Trump than she's done for any other State visitor she's received.

But it does show why all the Opposition leaders (Labour, SNP & Liberal Democrat) and the Commons Speaker felt it was worth boycotting the dinner. As expected, he ignored everyone else to focus solely on being seen with the Queen. Apparently, he sees that as a badge of honour rather than a diplomatic mistake. Again, it's going to be no surprise.

Trump on UK visit: 'People had never seen the Queen have a better time'

The US president, Donald Trump, has boasted about having “automatic chemistry” with the Queen during his state visit to the UK.

Trump, during an interview with Fox News, said people had noticed how well he and the Queen had connected.

He said: “The meeting with the Queen was incredible. I think I can say I really got to know her because I sat with her many times and we had automatic chemistry, you will understand that feeling. It’s a good feeling. But she’s a spectacular woman.”

When asked by the broadcaster’s Laura Ingraham if he fist-bumped the Queen, Trump said: “I did not, but I had a great relationship, we had a really great time.

“There are those that say they have never seen the Queen have a better time, a more animated time. We had a period we were talking solid straight, I didn’t even know who the other people at the table were, never spoke to them. We just had a great time together.”

Trump, when asked if he would keep the conversation going, added: “Yes I am, she is a spectacular woman, an incredible woman.”

The controversial billionaire-turned-politician was feted with a ceremonial welcome and a grand state banquet at Buckingham Palace during his stay in London this week and sat next to the Queen at the D-day commemorations in Portsmouth on Wednesday.
