Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And rural areas which are often poor (and white) do vote for the Republicans, the fact that well off suburbanites are terrible and also support Trump doesn't make that less true.
Also, I don't see the relevance.
Reaching out to the poor will likely pay vast dividends.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Something interesting I came across
Trump's empty Cabinet positions have exceeded any recent president, and it's not even close – No president in recent history has started their tenure with as many extended Cabinet vacancies.

Reaching out to the poor will likely pay vast dividends.
And what does reaching out to the poor entail that the Democrats aren't already doing? The Democrats are already the party fighting for the interests of the poor. Any poor people who are still voting Republican are either drinking the Right's koolaid (idiots), they care more about the "wrong people" not getting help than about getting help themselves (bigots), or both.
Part of it comes down to who you regard as working class/poor, is it people who barely make any money and own very little, or is it people who own a small business (often a financially underwater one) and their own home but lack much formal education?
Because the first group are totally worth reaching out to and tend to vote democrat when they are able to vote, but the second group are the ones focused on by the media and referred to as “working class” and they tend to vote republican because they’re racist.
Rural business owners do need help, but I’m tired of seeing them be treated like they’re the folks on the bottom rung of society.

Above all those, education for all. Because the better educated the voters are, the less likely they fall for people like Trump.
Hillary's platform was designed to boost the Middle Class and was not remotely adequate for genuinely struggling regions. I remember everyone telling me that I just didn't understand it. When there's actual food insecurity in my state.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.House Democrats officially introduce contempt resolution for Barr, McGahn
Looks like it's time for the stick, I suppose Pelosi has lost patience with them.
The resolution will allow for House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) to go to court to force the subpoena for Barr to turn over Mueller's unredacted report as well as forcing Mc Ghan to give public testimony and documents.
It would also give any committee chair the power to go federal court to seek the enforcement of subpoenas, both present, and future, so long as they are granted approval by the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group.
So yeah, they had their chance and now the Dems are getting serious.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangYeah, it's not that progressive policies are unpopular it's that racism is a highly effective motivator so any progressive is going to have to fight against some very determined opposition.
Not to mention that since day 01 racism has been excellent at defusing class tensions, which is bad if you want to reform the system.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI'd like to show you the corpses that would have resulted from it. The sheer lack of care by the people in the DNC who don't understand that people are dying because of the economic situation is disgusting.
We need radical change and without a Warren but a Biden, it's not going to get better.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I agree. Have you considered looking into Warren events in your area? Only options are do nothing or do something, and I think doing something might give you some hope you need. Not to mention taking agency is a good morale boost. I’m gonna volunteer for Warren as soon as I finish the bar exam; it’s at the end of July and my study/work schedule is heinous.
This popped up and is interesting
DNC Announces It Will Not Host 2020 Debate on Climate Crisis
I've heard speculation this is due to lobbing, but essentially climate won't be a topic at the presidential debates, futhermore
"Further, they explained that if we participated in anyone else's climate debate, we will not be invited to future debates. This is deeply disappointing."
Wow,petty and spiteful does not begin to describe this decision, its once thing disallow a topic,it's another thing to stop other people from discussing the issue,i'm honestly expecting them to backpeddle on this hard in typical fashion due to the backlash
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverThat's entirely incorrect.
They will not have a debate specifically for Climate Change, because that's Inslee's single issue. It's not like we have a debate on class inequality for Sanders, or business regulation for Warren.
Nothing about it involves no longer talking about it during the existing debates, it obviously will be mentioned. Nor does it involve lobbying, simply that they're not going to specifically cater to him over everyone else.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangEven still, a bar against doing other group's climate debates is kinda ridiculous. Town Halls and debates happen based on other issues happen frequently, I see no reason why a candidate should be locked in only to the DNC to debate it.
The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerMaybe, but then again, I don't see why he can't just talk about it during the existing debates.
I do know if I'd want candidates to be able to make their own debates on whatever issue they want, that just sounds like a recipe for chaos.

Earlier in the day, Trump declared that "not nearly enough" progress has been made in the negotiations with Mexico. Trump warned that "if no agreement is reached, Tariffs at the 5% level will begin on Monday, with monthly increases as per schedule." Trump indicated that he won't be satisfied with anything less than direct evidence that Mexico has completely stopped the flow of migration through its country. (New York Times / Politico)

2/ Trump threatened to impose tariffs on "at least" another $300 billion worth of Chinese goods, but said he thinks China and Mexico both want to make deals. "Our talks with China, a lot of interesting things are happening," Trump told reporters. "We'll see what happens… I could go up another at least $300 billion and I’ll do that at the right time." No face-to-face meetings between Trump and Chinese officials have been held since May 10, when Trump announced a 25% increase in tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods. (Reuters)

3/ The military will spend a month painting a mile-long section of the U.S.-Mexico border wall to improve its "aesthetic appearance." An unspecific number of service members were instructed to paint barriers in the California border town of Calexico for a total of 30 days. Sen. Dick Durbin called the task a "disgraceful misuse" of taxpayer money. (CBS News)
4/ Nancy Pelosi told senior Democrats she'd like to see Trump "in prison" while discussing with Rep. Jerry Nadler whether to launch impeachment proceedings against Trump. Nadler pressed Pelosi to start the proceedings, but Pelosi refused and said: "I don't want to see him impeached. I want to see him in prison." Pelosi said she prefers voters to remove Trump via the ballot box and then have him prosecuted for his crimes. Elizabeth Warren, meanwhile, said Trump "would be carried out in handcuffs" if he were anybody else. (Politico / Washington Post / NBC News)
5/ Jerry Nadler told Democratic leaders that he will issue a subpoena within the next two weeks for Robert Mueller to testify before the House Judiciary Committee if they're unable to reach an agreement to secure his voluntary public testimony. Mueller is currently only willing to answer questions in private, which is a nonstarter for most House Democrats. (Politico)

6/ House Democrats plan to grant committees the authority to enforce subpoenas for documents and witness testimony that the Trump administration has tried to block. Committee chairs will be able to sue the Trump administration and hold officials in contempt of Congress. Democrats said the reason for the change is to prevent contempt citations from dominating the House's floor time. (CNN / Politico)

Probably a cynical ploy, but not a surprise, given that this would put him to the right of the Democratic party (let alone his primary opponents) on the issue.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

I don't agree with this.
Media coverage benefited Trump during the election but what helped him win the nomination was the support of GOP base (and the crowded field). It's not true to say that without it he wouldn't have won the nomination, there was always a very good chance that he could've won it.
