Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Something Trump predicted to himself two decades ago
.
Things really are wrong if not only Trump won but that he was right about how he'd win.
That quote is bogus.
This is why you shouldn't get your news from random tweets.

Disgusted, but not surprised
That quote is fake. Snopes article on it.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."It's not just the Mexican tariffs that are probably going to raise food prices, flooding and other extreme weather in the Midwest is going to have a severe impact on the growing season there.
Severe weather patterns like this are linked to climate change, so also don't assume that this is going to be a single season problem.
It's going to be hard to undo the damage, too. We can remove the tariffs, but convincing people to actually lower prices rather than pocket the difference is an entirely different beast.
It's the same reason trickle-down doesn't work. When you give people more money, what happens is that those people have more money and they are very happy.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I just checked back through when I was gone, and I'm surprised no one has brought this up. And, to be honest, kinda disappointed.
Transgender Rights
are under attack from multiple fronts across the United States.
The Trump administration is moving to make it even easier to discriminate against Trans people in health care, on top of previous moves. It is at the point where a doctor can now cite religion and refuse treatment to Trans people. Not just for Trans related healthcare, but for anything. In the hospital? Better hope your doctor is willing to treat you and not just leave you for dead.
Additionally (and the one that scares me most), the Department of H.U.D. is moving to allow homeless shelters to force Trans people in them to use accommodations for bathrooms and sleeping based on birth sex and not gender identity. This I fear will have a freezing effect on homeless Trans people (and Trans people are more likely to be homeless than the average person) from visiting these shelters, making them more likely to die.
Moreover, the Justice department is pushing to make it legal to be able to fire someone on account of them being Trans. This could make it harder for Trans people, particularly poorer Trans people, to be able to come out and keep some degree of financial security.
This is on the backdrop of multiple Trans women of color being found murdered recently, particularly in the city of Dallas. Violence against Trans people and especially Trans people of color continues unabated, and the Republicans continue to try to push us under rather than help.
Though at times, even the Democrats aren't great on these issues. I don't usually use New Republic
, but this helped encapsulate some of my frustrations with left-leaning folks and Democrats when it comes to these issues.
Its not just the military anymore, the attacks are coming against our basic needs. Please support us here too.
The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerRepublicans attacking a vulnerable minority is sadly par for the course, still, it's certainly something worth drawing attention to.
Democrats, on the other hand, who fail to properly support Trans interests are unconscionable. They need to get their act together, no one should be thrown under the bus especially not in the counterproductive desire to court bigots.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangSadly, its not always just to court bigots. Sometimes, they are merely bigots in and of themselves.
There have been times that courting bigots happens. Roy Cooper in North Carolina, for instance, I've never truly forgiven over his actions after the 2016 elections. Yet sometimes, like with the cases with Warren and Harris, its because they genuinely didn't see us as deserving of the same or humane treatment. Bigotry is not merely the purview of the Republicans, only much much more so.
And people can change - Warren has changed a lot, Harris...tried to dodge as much of the blame as possible, Sanders put up a flag outside his office. Yet so many times, even when Democrats choose to push more for Trans rights, that support stops when it comes to helping the incarcerated or the homeless or sex workers, or to taking a stronger stance on racism and how it intersects the lives of Trans POC.
These issues are harder to grapple with than just supporting letting Trans people into the military, yet a lot of commentators tend to focus on the military - and not the rest of this stuff.
When I said a while back "the military ban is a show of intent" this is what I meant. That was the opening act. Here comes the bigger issues.

Right, but these aren't just some random bad things. They're rather significant policy shifts.
They are angling to set Transgender rights to square one, and I don't see a whole lot of discussion outside of the trans-centric spaces I inhabit. This isn't "a regular Tuesday" for Trump, its a concerted move attacking our employment rights, healthcare, and housing. Things a lot of people rely on for survival.
We're at code red right now, the NYT is still publishing Transphobic articles, and it feels like the wider world would prefer to ignore us. Ya know?
Doesn't it at least merit some discussion?
Also, the by now obligatory "Manning is still in jail while Barr and company go free"
comment from me while I'm here.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerIt's worth discussing in depth, but a lot of things worth discussing in-depth don't get it because there's so much.
Which isn't an excuse, I think just the reasoning. I don't know how much it matters but does Trump, personally care about this, or are there specific members of his administration making this their thing? I know the go to is Pence, but is there anyone else?
So, let me get this straight.
Trump is holding a rally on the 18th June in Orlando to announce his run for a second term (you know, that term he's been running for ever since 21st January 2017), and tickets to the event are being sold on his personal website (according to WHOIS, the domain is owned by The Trump Organisation).
And all of his rallies as president go through this website for ticket sales.
I know there are emoluments cases going through the courts (whether or not they're still held up, I don't know), but isn't this an example of that?
I guess they might want to look into how the DeVos family is benefiting, too, given that they own the place the rally is being held at.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.![]()
Carson is in charge of HUD, a move there would have been by him.
And IIRC eroding the healthcare provisions are part of Trump's push to remove Obama era protections, while the employment rules have been in the sight of Conservatives in general for a while now.
