The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

About the only thing good about Trump is the fact that he doesn't want to get involved in wars, just the appearance of them.

Pence is fully capable of going to war with Iran, North Korea, or Canada.

Yeah. I mean credit where it's due, at least Trump hasn't started a senseless war, like his republican predecessor (or multiple ones, to be precise).

Too bad he's unstable enough that he could easily start a war if he believed he could, like have you forgotten how close they came to war with Iran?He sent a load opf troops over there for gods sake,a clear indication of a possible conflict

With Trump it's his only saving but that rings hollow when you remember that plenty of other presidents have managed not start a pointless war,its far more likely a war starts elsewhere he decides in get involved because he wants the glory

I'd argue that the one that's still currently alive and in power is the one that's most dangerous. Since he's, you know, alive and in power.

It was a science joke.

I.e. "time is relative so technically the past and present are the same." Einstein used it to let his friend's wife know that her husband could never die because he always alive somewhen.

But I think comparing Trump with the guy who did the Trail of Tears and kidnapped a Native child to raise as his own is just letting us know what a shitty situation we're in.

Eh, the reason Trump hasn't done his own trail of tears despite the fact that he'd love too is because it is harder to get away with nowadays.

Jackson said "The Courts have made their decision, now let them enforce it". Trump said the same thing about Congress.

I don't know if this video explains something all of us knew already or not, but I found it an interesting look into how insidious hate speech can be by pretending to be innocuous.

Unfortunately I learned two videos later that he's kind of a bothsidesist so that's disappointing.

Oh, sorry. He goes by Thought Slime on youtube. He actually makes pretty good content despite the lowkey bothsidesism. He also has videos where he explains how the right don't actually value individualism and why being civil towards the right cannot work.

Unfortunately the latter video also paints Nancy Pelosi as a Dirty Centrist™ who makes successions to the right because it makes her look good and, besides maintaining power, that's all she cares about. So... yeah.

If that doesn't wrinkle you, though, check him out.

I mean, maybe, but even then, claiming Pelosi cedes to the right is objectively wrong, and comes from a rigid definition of the word "civil" that conflates it with "concession".

He claims the center-left only cares about staying in power and not the people, and while he's careful to specify the center-left, he compares the two big tent parties in ways that lead me to believe that he believes that those apathetic, self-centered center-leftists make up the majority of Democrats, which, for my money, is functionally identical to bothsidesism.

And, look, don't get me wrong; there are plenty of people that insist that the right would be so much more well-behaved if we would just be nicer to them.

But if you think Daryl Davis and Nancy Pelosi are equivalent in anyway, you're kidding yourself.

I've said before that there are two brands of bothsiderism: centrist bothsiderism and extremist bothsiderism.

Centerist bothsiderism: both sides are equally bad because they both say mean things about each other. I'm apathetic about politics.

Extremist bothsiderism: both sides are equally bad because the side that's supposedly with me isn't as extreme as I want them to be. I'm extremely passionate about politics.

"I don't like the current dominant tendencies in the Democratic Party" does not equal "they are equally as bad as the Republicans". If you don't expect people left of social democracy to have some problems with a party that pitches itself as "we'll maintain the existing system, but slightly nicer" you haven't met many leftists.
