Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And Dont Ask Dont Tell was a flat out improvement over the previous standards (You know being flat out banned), even if it is bad by todays.
Dont forget that just as close as the beginning of this decade gay marriage was widely UNAPPROVED, and that even Obama was agianst it.
We have done astounding work getting the perception flipped completely in such a short time, but it makes what was good in the 90s seem bad by comparision.

Trump has given Barr wide sweeping powers to investigate whether the Democrats have been spying on him during the 2016 campaign and to make arrests.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.George Takei has joked about running against Mitch Mc Connell.
He's received a wave of support there.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. Also being unseated my a potentially unqualified celebrity with (iirc) a sex scandal or two behind him would have a nice taste of Hoist by His Own Petard after McConnell's support of Trump.
On a less amusing note - Trump is pardoning Gallagher, the Seal who committed a horrific number of war crimes against women and children.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.George Takei's sexual assault accuser said he doesn't actually recall being touched by George Takei at all and toxicologists state that it wasn't possible he was drugged with the drugs he claimed he was (as they didn't exist yet).

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Lovely. All he has to do is start slapping handcuffs on people and the Democrat Spying narrative will be locked into the public consciousness. Even if the charges don't hold up in a court of law, the Court of Public Opinion will declare that the Democrats are guilty - backed up by sensational headlines about "DEMOCRAT ARRESTED FOR THE THING".
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Barr has shown that he's willing to commit crimes for Trump, I'm not hopefully that he'll draw a line between "covering up real crimes" and "arresting people for fake crimes".
It's likely however that Barr arresting prominent Democrats might spark Pelosi into action, she can order his arrest whenever she wants.
Then it comes down to which way the capital police go, do they arrest Barr on Pelosi's orders or Pelosi on Barr's orders?

Your scenario requires CNN, the New York Times and such to go along with Barr and say that he's legitimately arresting criminal democrats instead of that he's rounding up political opponents. I'm not saying I'd bet against them going that way, but there are two possible narratives that could emerge, same as with Pelosi arresting Barr.

Why am I not surprised. Even if said lawyer is telling the truth in that there's no influence/direction going on, surely he must see how bad the optics for this is?

Uuh.. why would it be the capitol police? Do Congress and the DOD have direct control over them? Do they not have Secret Service or something like the FBI to do it? (Which actually wouldn't surprise me, since Congress can apparently just override the mayor/council of the actual city there as regards things like public works.)
Man, that thing isn't even going to get started; it's a long term project that Trump can't even be in office long enough to see through. Hell, there's lawsuits from Bush's term about putting up border fences on what turns out to be private property that are still going through the courts. What he's currently doing is just taking credit from other long term projects regarding things like replacing fences or otherwise maintaining what structure is already there. As much as he wants this project it will not be started during his presidency, regardless of if he's voted out or gets another term. Which is what I've been saying since he got into office; things this large require so much pre-planning that it is literally impossible to get done in four to eight years. Someone coming in after him can just ax the project if it even gets through that stage.
As for that one Republican: Goddammit, you can't just let one thing through, can you? Can't let anything go and just let some people get some help.

My understanding was that DOMA was in party signed because if Democrats didn’t support it rpeublicans were planning to get a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, something they might well have had the support for.
If they’d gone for that by the way, gar marriage would s it’ll be illegal in all 50 states.
