Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There is a bit of myopia that goes around in this thread, I believe. We keep saying and thinking about what we want, but it's never considered what the general public - those who mostly despise Trump but aren't exactly wowed by Democrats either, or who simply their news by reading the paper as part of their daily routine, or people who don't pay much attention to politics at all - think and/or want.
Yikes. I heard from my Weather Channel app that the midwest and east coast are supposed to get hit with a pretty nasty storm today. Even now, I can see the first signs of it right outside my window.

i'm tired, my friendI'm liking Justin Amash more and more: Justin Amash Lays Out Trump’s Alleged Crimes in Defiant Tweetstorm: A ‘Consistent Effort’ to Obstruct
On that note: Justin Amash loses the DeVos family as a donor, who represents their district, the 3rd district of Michigan.
There are Republicans disgusted with De Vos?
The Senate has passed a disaster relief bill finally. With a billion dollars for Puerto Rico, without Trump's extra billions border money.

Are More Moderate Democrats More Electable?
Highlights:
- Moderate Democratic candidates do seem to have better overall favorability ratings
Moderates like Biden, Buttigieg and Julián Castro are the only Democrats with net-positive ratings. The ones on the bottom of the list are the more overtly liberal candidates.
- High-information voters love Elizabeth Warren — and not Bernie Sanders
More informed voters like Warren better than they do Sanders. They also like Biden more, oddly enough. It seems Sanders mainly relies on name recognition.
- Nate added Bill de Blasio to his presidential tiers — the very bottom one.
Not much to say on this, really.
Nate also included a bonus bulletpoint in which he expressed frustration at the Australian press getting polls wrong.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI think that Biden's got a lot of political solidity - and even high-information voters tend to give him a pass about 20-year-old sexual harassment and his disdain for Anita Hill. And policy-wise, he did craft the VAWA. That's a major marker in the plus side of his account.
High information voters know that he'd be right at home in the Bill Clinton White House. A lot of us want just that. I'd rather see some new ideas in 2020, but there's something to be said for old white guys who have decades of experience.
Bill Clinton's presidency had heavy doses of punitive justice laws, welfare cuts (guess which groups they affected most) and long lasting dismantling of LGBT rights. Why any self proclaimed liberal voter would want that back, I have no idea, but I truly don't.
Because they have the Bush and Trump administrations to compare him to?
And believe me, I'm no fan of the Clintons but wasn't Clinton trying to improve LGBT rights by easing the army into it with Don't Ask Don't Tell?
It just disastrously wrong?

Even if DADT could arguably have had a good intent, the same could not be said for the Defense of Marriage Act, which Biden voted for and Clinton signed, the only goal there was the crushing of gay marriage and its supporters.

Jefferson City, Missouri, the state capital, just received a direct hit from a possible E-F3 tornado overnight.
