There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

So Elizabeth Warren has proposed another policy
, this time in response to the various abortion laws being passed. TL;DR - she wants to completely repeal the Hyde Amendment (read: "No federal dollars go towards abortion"), have an actual law legalizing abortion on a Federal level (rather than just the Supreme Court statute alone), and reverse Trump's gag order that bars facilities that provide family planning from referring patients for or performing abortions.
Naturally it'd stand little chance of actually passing in the current Congress, but kudos for stepping up her game that overtly.
Edit: Oops, I missed two more - she also wants to end the "TRAP" (Targeted Regulations on Abortion Providers) laws, otherwise known as "Oh, you want to provide abortions? Sure, just get admitting privileges at a hospital nearby. Why? Fuck you, that's why" laws. Beyond that, she also wants to allow abortions to be covered under Medicaid (hence the repeal of the Hyde Amendment), ban laws that restrict insurers from actually covering abortions privately (see Ohio's latest law), and have contraceptive coverage as part of Medicaid.
True - which is why I mentioned it in the middle there. However, she and Kristen Gillibrand are the only Democratic candidates who've actually laid out plans to counteract these State-level pushes by the GOP, rather than simply decried the laws and not much else.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"This would require the Democratic Party to take the House and the Senate in addition to the WH. And that's not even considering that not every Democratic official is on board with abortion rights, unfortunately. I still recall that one mayoral candidate Sanders endorsed who wasn't pro-choice.
Disgusted, but not surprisedUgh, and this is why I'm none-too-enthused about Biden - Joe Biden heads to Philadelphia to give pitch on uniting the country
- excerpt of the prepared speech below.
If the American people want a president to add to our division, to lead with a clenched fist, closed hand and a hard heart, to demonize the opponents and spew hatred — they don’t need me. They already have a President who does just that. I am running to offer our country – Democrats, Republicans and Independents – a different path
And you know what? Yes, I'm fucking angry, and I remember full well just how many times Obama reached out to Republicans in Congress and promptly got slapped in the face for it. As well-intentioned as Biden might be here, the bare fact is that the GOP have a negative incentive to actually cooperate with a Democratic President (since they'd be labelled a RINO and subsequently Primaried out of Congress for doing so), and pretending otherwise is naive at best and deceptive at worst.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"There are plenty of Democrats who are opposed to abortion and I don't see how Warren's law could survive a 10th amendment challenge even if it became law. So
unfortunately. The bits about Medicaid and the like are fine but the rest won't work.
Yeah it’s easy for Biden to talk about compromise, he’s a strait, white, old, educated, rich, man. It’s not his life that’s being traded away in a compromise.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI've read about Warren's position, it's great. We must not hold back against the enemies of gender equality, they have clearly shown that they will do whatever efficacious to advance their objective. We should be the same.
Thankfully Warren isn't the only candidate who has pushed forward substantive policy on reproductive rights and abortion, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has written an article in Medium outlining her plans.
Gillibrand has called for us to label the proponents of these restrictive laws for what they are. Ideologically driven extremists who have no right to make the decisions they make, and she has made a point of mentioning how these attacks disproportionately affect vulnerable groups such as low-income families, people of color, young people, the LGBTQ community, and people in rural areas who lack access to healthcare.
To address these attacks Gillibrand supports aggressively fighting Voter Suppression to allow those marginal voices to speak and be given the opportunity to defend their interests. She also mentions how she was the first candidate to announce a robust policy of defending reproductive rights, including access to abortion, birth control, sex education, and other forms of basic healthcare.
Beyond that she also supported:
1. Codifying Woe v Wade into law.
2. Ending the Hyde Amendment which blocks women of color and low-income women from having access to abortion rights.
3. Guaranteeing access to reproductive healthcare (including abortion) regardless of what state you live in. She would also create funding to ensure that reproductive healthcare centers in every state could continue to function and provide their vital services.
She also left off with this message:
I know that this struggle can be exhausting, heartbreaking, and terrifying. It feels like we’ve been waging the same battle for our rights for years — because we have been. But we cannot give up. We stand on the shoulders of women and allies who’ve come before us. And we can win if we join together.
So now’s our time to fight like hell. This isn’t just a fight for equality — it’s a fight for our lives. And it’s one I refuse to lose.
I don't know about all of you but I've been extremely impressed by Warren and Gillibrand's showing, patriarchal forces are waging war on women and it's nice to see powerful voices arguing for us to fight back. Hopefully, if nothing else their message will resonate and become a major focus in the primary.
Things seem impossible until they suddenly aren't, we should push and push until it becomes possible.
The opponents of women's reproductive rights aren't moderating themselves and neither should we. We need to be aggressive and we need to be aggressive now.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangUh, there are surely some people on the left who are attacking Warren but I really don't think it's accurate to say that the Left or Far-Left are viciously attacking her as a whole.
I haven't seen anything of the sort.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangIf anything, I’d guess that no small number of the people attacking Warren for not being Sanders are astroturfers.
My musician pageAstroturfing is when a movement is trying to look like it was legitimately put together, which would be called a grassroots movement, but is actually set up artificially, for example by using bots to make it look like they have more support than they actually do. It got that name from the type of sports field, since it’s an imitation of grassroots in the same way astroturf fields imitate grass fields.
My musician pagePretty certain. I frequent leftist sources online a lot and people have nothing but respect for her. Like, she doesn't drive enthusiasm the way Bernie does, but everyone agrees she's solid and trustworthy and would absolutely be comfortable with her being the Democratic nominee.
Yeah, but her Native American bit was just considered a bit silly and embarassing, but hardly a Major Sin.

Warren got a ton of negative press when she first announced from darn near everyone over her ancestry and that didn't go away for like two months.
As more candidates got in the race though, and she started rolling out popular policies every other week, most progressives started looking at her in a better light.
I feel confident that Warren would do well in an approval ballot, not that such a hypothetical matters.
My musician pageTo be fair, Biden looking reasonable is probably part of his campaign strategy. The entirety of the Republican machine is built on the premise that Democrats are going to take your everything. He can and will undermine them at every turn by making it look like he's a sane, ratioanle, adult. Whether he believes it or not doesn't matter until after the election.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Broken Clock Syndrome. Trump doesn't actually want to go to war with Iran because even he remembers quagmires in the Middle East are unpopular no matter how much Bolton and Pompeo crave war.
He's perfectly willing to saber rattle because sticking it to Iran is popular with his base Neocons and White Evangelicals but unless the last person in the room was singing his praise while also saying "Bomb Iran" every other lyric that's as far as he actually wants to go.
