Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

We got some good news from Trump and now here's the bad news: Trump has declared some auto part imports a national security threat, but has delayed a decision for six months.
On the topic of Michael Flynn, apparently he'd informed Mueller of multiple attempts at influencing his testimony
, and the article references a voicemail mentioned in the Mueller report that Flynn had turned over.
[I]f... there's information that implicates the President, then we've got a national security issue [so] ... we need some kind of heads-up. Just for the sake of protecting all our interests if we can .... [R]emember what we've always said about the President and his feelings toward Flynn and, that still remains."
The more interesting part is this - “The defendant informed the government of multiple instances, both before and after his guilty plea, where either he or his attorneys received communications from persons connected to the Administration or Congress that could’ve affected both his willingness to cooperate and the completeness of that cooperation," says the newly revealed section of a sentencing memo originally filed in December.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"For context, the "attorney" quoted there is just identified in the article as "one of Trump's personal attorneys" circa November 2017.
So probably Cohen.
In anycase, it's an interesting nothingburger, but a nonthingburger nonetheless.

Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.And in news reinforcing that women aren't the only ones who can be victims of sexual assault (while unfortunately reinforcing the Depraved Homosexual trope), Ohio State's former doctor was found to have sexually abused around 177 male student-athletes
from 1979 to 1997, before retiring in 1998 and committing suicide in 2005. And worst of all, it was basically an open secret - The report found many of the students thought the doctor’s behavior was an “open secret” and that their coaches, trainers and other team doctors knew about it. The students described the examinations by Strauss as being “hazed” or going through a “rite of passage.”
One of those that allegedly knew about the claims is current Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH), though he claims the report vindicates him
.
Child molestation seems to be one of those "open secrets" that permeates institutions. Nobody ever wants to admit it publicly because it would reflect badly on them. I wonder how we'll ever get that problem fixed.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Australia did a massive government-based judicial campaign rooting out this sort of thing in institutions, such as schools, boy scouts, religious groups...
Jehovah's Witnesses really stood out among the groups studied, because they had an active policy of sheltering the criminals and guilting the abusees out of reporting it to the authorities. On a truly massive scale.
Jim Jordan is a Tea Party guy, we all know how trustworthy these people are.
I dunno, I think the problem is that when we hear the words "rape" or "sexual abuse" we think something that involves a high amount of violence and psychological trauma by people who are obviously thugs. Especially the latter isn't correct way too many times.

Agreed. And it's not necessarily limited to rape/sexual assault, either. Back when I worked as a substitute teacher (at the High School I graduated from), I saw a group of boys snickering at the back of the room during a "study hall" (read: no sub lesson plan) class. Come to find out, nude pics of one of their classmates was pretty widespread on student phones, and they even offered to show me. I declined, because duh, and reported it to the main office afterward.
The school, I think, handled it better than most - no charges were filed for disseminating child pornography, but they held an assembly emphasizing the issues at play for students with it. However, I subsequently saw a very sharp drop in how often I was called in to sub, including one case where the teacher explicitly requested me. The message at that point was clear - Head-in-the-Sand Management was strictly at play here, as they didn't want reports about student misbehavior getting out and impugning their reputation.
In fairness, it's not just the right-wing. Due in large part to shows like "To Catch a Predator", the average citizen immediately thinks "Child rapist" when the term "sex offender" is mentioned, even if that is nowhere near the reality of the situation. I recall reading an article about a decade ago about a man in Florida who slept with an underage girl he'd met in a bar (who used a fake ID). He pleaded out after being arrested, and his subsequent sex offender status meant that, when his wife (who he'd met later and knew about the situation) got pregnant, he had to move out of the house because he wasn't allowed near children.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"I find it highly disturbing btw how obsessed the right in the USA is with pedophiles. They see them everywhere, accuse everyone in the opposition they want to destroy, conjure up entire conspiracy theories around it.....yet outright ignore the very REAL and CONFIRMED pedophiles in their beloved church.

My musician pageI think it's slightly less projection and more the very ugly extreme of "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!", since you often see them equating large amounts of issues to the supposed safety of children. It's a default argument for the right, because it does indeed create something of a kneejerk reaction in people.
The Right is very much about appealing to emotion.
It is absolutely projection. They take all negative traits that exist among themselves and project them onto whoever they don't like. It's a defensive response, like a skunk spraying: the equivalent of a child yelling, "No you!"
The fact that it is also part of a coordinated public strategy for deflecting criticism doesn't change any of the above.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Nah, I don't think this is projection at all (to begin with, there is no evidence). I'd think more of law-and-order thinking (here in Switzerland, the right wing party has been bearing this banner for a while) when it comes to the paedophilia topic.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanA correction for the non-Americans but Catholics are not accepted as members of the Religious Right. Many of the GOP don't consider them Christian at all. The Right in America are actually fairly lax on sex crimes and very often are prone to victim blaming. They are individuals who have a history of defending rapists and sex offenders as long as they're white and male.

The hearing is not scheduled. It's currently hanging in limbo, to be scheduled at an unspecified point in the future alongside an unspecified number of other contempt charges, none of which have been voted on or even suggested by committee.
YMMV on whether
You're welcome to draw your own conclusions. But it's not difficult to tell which conclusion William Barr has drawn, based on his and other members' of the Trump Executive's behavior. They are entirely confident that the Trump Executive has beaten the House's oversight attempts through sheer Refuge in Audacity.
