Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, we're talking about the self-proclaimed American left, the Bernie-Or-Bust, the Unicorn Brigade, the kinds of people who refuse to vote for a Democrat if they have said or done anything that they disagree with, regardless of how evil their Republican opponent is.
There are a lot of them, and they're very annoying. Let's put it this way: this group is a lot larger than the inverse, people who vote Democrat but would not vote for someone pushing leftist policies and ideas.
I personally know Bernie-or-busters who refused to vote for Hillary in 2016 because she was a "corporate shill", unironically and ignorantly aping the character attacks pushed by Russian trolls and by the Trump campaign. Many of them don't even have the self-awareness to rethink that choice.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I’d remind everyone that the 2016 Bernie-or-busy group was the same size as the 2008 Hillary-or-bust group.
Don’t mistake loudness on twitter for actual numbers.
Also keep in mind that many “or bust” voters aren’t democrats, they’re republicans who wouldn’t have voted for their choice in the primary at the main either. They’re not a purely left-wing problem.

That assumes that a more leftist candidate wouldn’t get the Union vote, which is not necessarily the case.
On the other hand there really isn’t enough of those Bernie or Bust leftist to tilt the vote either way so appealing to them really isn’t useful anyway.

my inner cynic and optimist have this say
"people will vote for whoever is louder and Trump is louder so.."
"Come off it! There's one candidate worth a damn in this race and people will hopefully realise this when they reflect on years since Trump's election"
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverYou're almost certainly right, Obama-Trump voters voted because of racism and sexism
it's very likely that Biden would do better amongst them when compared to Clinton.
Still, if Biden wins the primary then I'll already consider that a loss. He will do absolutely nothing to address the major structural issues that infect our nation and has uttered worrying idiocy about being "bipartisan". Trump would be worse but that says little.

The Alabama ACLU has begin steps to resist the full abortion bill.
Which will mean court judgments.
Which will mean appeals to higher courts.
Which will eventually mean appealing to the Supreme Court.
All according to keikaku. Awful, awful keikaku.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. You're more right then you know, but not for the reason you think.
Vox has an excellent on the subject, Alabama Republicans want to overturn Roe v. Wade. Their strategy could backfire.
To summarize, there's a reason anti-abortion figures are opposing this. The public is almost entirely in favor of allowing abortion in the case of rape and incest, something that the bill explicitly does not permit. Furthermore, legislators behind it have said that they're doing this to get it to the Supreme Court, which is generally a counterproductive way to get the Court to pay attention to you.
Furthermore, on abortion, the Robert's Court has demonstrated a tepid position where they don't want to be seen taking a position on it.
So it's an awful plan not just because of the cruelty but also because it's unlikely to be efficacious.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangCross posting from the Canadian politics thread; Trump pardoned media baron (and literal former Lord, via the UK) Conrad Black, who was convicted of fraud and obstruction back in 2007. Black has wrote a lot of glowing pro-Trump op-eds, and a whole book praising him last year.

This us actualy untrue, only 15% of the population dont have an oppinion on her, she is currently one of the most well known politicians there is.... dispite the rather insignificance of her possition.
As you said yourself, the media mever quits talkong about her.

Probably many of the same people who didn't vote the last time around. Don't assume most of them have learned a lesson, even now.
