Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, they're doing it so that it gets challenged all the way up to the Supreme Court, hoping that this fairly conservative Supreme Court will overturn Roe vs Wade.
It's not a coincidence that several states are introducing anti-abortion laws in quick succession. They've been aiming to overturn Roe vs Wade for almost fifty years. And they think they have a chance with this Supreme Court.

i certainly hope all energy they put into destroying Roe vs Wade results in something even harder taking it's place, its like with the Affordable Care Act,they keep trying to destroy it but it's still standing

Republican-appointed justices currently outnumber democrat-appointed justices in the Supreme court 5-4, however some of them have been evasive regarding whether they would overturn Roe v. Wade if the issue came up. We won't know whether they'll uphold precedent (uphold Roe v Wade) or go full textualist (constitution is silent on abortion, overturning Roe v. Wade is constitutional) until it actually happens.

"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."As I recall, Roe v. Wade was decided on the basis of the right to privacy: specifically that the government cannot dictate what a person is allowed to do with their own body so long as they don't infringe on the rights of others. Under this reasoning, a law forbidding masturbation, or nail clipping, would similarly be unconstitutional, unless these acts could be shown to do harm.
The key legal argument against abortion rights is that the mother's right to decide what to do with her body ends when it infringes on the right of the fetus to live. In other words, once you get pregnant, you may be commanded by law to bear the child regardless of your own desires.
Thus, the question before the courts is whether the fetus' right to be born is more important than the mother's right to control her body. Roe v. Wade found in favor of the latter, and that is precedent, but SCOTUS could overturn it.
Of course, the real rationale for the anti-abortion movement is control over women (i.e. misogyny), who have independent thoughts and won't always vote Republican like their men tell them to, but you won't see that come up in court. It became a cause celebre of movement conservatism in the mid to late 20th century as a way of consolidating evangelicals under the GOP umbrella.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Its actually not precisely a law against LGBT.
Its actually meant as a law to make it harder for citizenship birth.
He's trying to get birth citizenship overturned.
Mind you, it's not like he has to pick and choose "benefits."
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. If I remember correctly isn't trump trying to make it to where children born of wedlock don't have citizenship so that he could count the children of LGBT couples among them?
Trump just wants to cut down on non-white citizenship as much as possible. The whole focus on wedlock and narrow reading thereof are tools primarily to that end. Though I don't doubt that some in the administration are enjoying hurting LGBT people
Trump's tariffs are beginning to raise prices at major retailers.

You know how there's this thing in which the media/public generally talk about Presidents in neutral to positive terms, regardless of their actual policies (with a few notable exceptions like Andrew Jackson and Nixon), probably because to bad mouth a President after he's out of office is "poor-taste" or whatever? I'm honestly curious if that's going to be the case after Trump leaves office.

I was confident that no one here would stay home as a protest if Biden became the candidate, but I'm not so sure anymore.
Oh, without question. I'm mad as hell at House Dems right now and I do not like Biden or Sanders, but that's a matter for the primaries. There's no excuse for failing to vote (barring legitimate instances of voter suppression).
And the Republicans would have to cut out a lot of naked evil to even be worth consideration. My beef with House Dems right now is insufficient resistance to Republican authoritarianism; voting red would be cutting off the nose to spite the face.

In other news, Trump gave 60 million dollars of bailout money to Brazilian meat producers. The money being set aside for American farmers.
Note: I actually don't hate this one because it's part of a larger effort to build ties with groups other than Bejing. It's horrible optics but reducing our dependency on China is a good thing.
