Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Esquire magazine joins the ranks of the forum posters here who believe the Democrats are chickening out.
They say Nadler is guaranteeing Trump's re-election.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Bernie is saying that, and so is everyone else
Your (Bernie) not going to win me over unless his argument significantly better and his own instead of parroting everyone
Besides,I'm certain he has to have congress's approval to do something like this?
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverObama attempted to hand back power from the Executive but was blocked by his own party.
Well, Trump would Veto it and it would go to the Senate.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. No, I'm saying that Obama tried to roll it back and the Democrats told him to do the opposite.
I've also been very critical of the Obama administration's handling of power and war.
It's, in fact, my only criticism of Obama.
That and wasting a year trying to build bridges with the GOP who hated him for some nebulous indefinable part of his personage.

And that is what we call revisionist history.
The Obama administration continuously pushed the envelope of its war powers. Remember when he authorized JSOC to conduct “targeted applications of force”, or assassinations, in any country on earth they felt they needed to under the 2001 AUMF? Or when he ran around his own party in congress to expand his ability to conduct air strikes and drone strikes? The loosening of guidelines for said strikes to allow them to be carried out anywhere there’s even a suspicion of someone connected to terrorism? Expanding the US air war into Africa and the Philippines?
Keep in mind, I don’t consider much of this a bad thing. I believe the president should have robust war powers.
You’re sadly mistaken on the Obama admin’s record here though.

The best part of all that is that having a space force really isn’t a bad idea, these are just its worst possible advocates.

They should have sent a poet.Pat Robertson is indisputably a theocratic reactionary but he seems to take his faith somewhat seriously even if his interpretation of it is grotesque. I remember him talking about trans people and from the way he spoke of them, while he clearly saw them as inferior, he still believed that their dysphoria and gender identities were valid.
At the same time he thinks the policy is illegitimate not because he disagrees with it but because he believes the Supreme Court is too liberal to accept it, which is Right for the Wrong Reasons.

Because you have no evidence whatsoever to substantiate the point you’re making.
The only time Obama did anything like even try to rein in his war powers was after Trump got elected and he issued his guidelines for use of said powers, which Trump proceeded to ignore. Shifting blame from the Obama admin to the Democratic Party is a brazen attempt to cover up that administration’s massive and unilateral expansion of the President’s ability to wage war, and presumably an attempt to smear congressional Democrats in the process.
