Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

To be fair, I think Vermont is the second whitest. Maine wins out there, and it's where Le Page was elected governor. Twice.
Or, to put it in another way... That's how the legal way to do this thing is: You don't see anything obvious on the surface because it's all happening in quiet offices in the form of a LONG trail of boring paperwork. You don't like that? Too bad, because reality doesn't care about your feelings (or mine, for that matter).

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.According to this Gallup poll from last year, they hold similar views on it, though women favor abortion rights more.
Men, Women Generally Hold Similar Abortion Attitudes
26% of men favor legal abortion under all circumstances, while 31% of women favor legal abortion under all circumstances.
The story highlights:
- 19% of both men and women say abortion should be totally illegal
- 31% of women and 26% of men want abortion to be totally legal
- 42% of female college graduates want abortion to be totally legal

Disgusted, but not surprisedAnti-Abortion females are not at all uncommon, and in fact I'd even say that women can be pretty devoted to the cause. My sister, for example, is pretty staunchly anti-abortion.
I'd probably say it's more accurate to say that women feel stronger on abortion than men than that they explicitly tend to like or dislike it.
Leviticus 19:34Some women view it as central to their ethos and the basis of feminism. Other women view it as a Necessary Evil at best.
Mind you, others note it wasn't a major political issue until fairly recently.
It became one, IMHO, as a distraction from other issues.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. It becomes a problem whenever politicians broach the subject so drastically. Abortion is a political matter when people try to ban it.
If it were up to me, anyone who votes for (or fails to veto) an anti-abortion law, any politician campaigning on an anti-abortion platform, and anyone who votes for them, would be actionable for child support. At least.
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Well, I have little understanding for people who are are against abortion UNLESS they also engage themselves in help for young single mothers...since the same people who are against abortion tend to love the word "wellfare queen" while pushing for sex education which boils down to "don't do it" instead of explaining teens how to protect themselves from potentially deadly diseases, I have little understanding for people who are against abortion period.

Vermont is the whitest state in the union and a place all the crazy militia types move. -Kentucky stereotype
