Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Another fun Kentucky hellhole story.
"The police hate bicycles—riding them will get you arrested."

Which is illegal according to posted signs at most interstate highway entrances. They are for motor vehicles only.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"You cannot safely ride a bicycle in 55+ MPH traffic, even on the shoulder. It's just common sense, like wearing a seatbelt. Also, as regards jaywalking, pedestrians just popping out of nowhere are asking for collisions. Drivers cannot be expected to play slalom down city streets with humans as the flags.
There's a certain subset of the human race who, through willfulness or stupidity, thinks that their personal beliefs should override the laws of physics. If you get into an argument with a car, you're going to lose whether you have a valid legal claim against the driver or not. The onrushing train doesn't care whether you believe in it, etc. Also, paramedics and coroners have better things to do than scrape people off of the pavement because they took a principled stand against the automobile industry.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It's the reason why you're not supposed to walk on train tracks, with the added caveat that sometimes the place where you're toodly-doodling your 12-speed along the shoulder might be someone's only hope to swerve and avoid contributing to a pileup. I used to travel a stretch of the interstate in Vermont where speeds would routinely go up to 90 MPH. If you're biking for pleasure, there are safer places; if you're planning to actually go places, sometimes exits can be 20 miles apart. Biking on the interstate is deeply stupid and dangerous.
It's been fun.We really don't, though. Highways are not a place to walk or bike for leisure. Maybe there's an argument to be made for treating the areas highways go through with more respect, sure, but that was a conversation to have before we banded the Earth with eight-lane asphalt roads. Walking on the highway should only ever be done in extremis, like if your car breaks down or something - and if it's an accessibility issue, as in that it's expensive to own a car just to get places, then the answer is expanded public transit, not bike lanes placed next to semi-trailers doing 70.
It's been fun. Here's the fixed link btw:
repeatedly arrested and jailed – for commuting on the road
The situation is complicated by the fact that a judge ruled that she was allowed to ride her bike on the highway...for some reason.
She gets repeatedly arrested anyway because her cycling seems to be causing trouble for the drivers and they report her. The cops then show up because they have to do that, only to discover it's the same cyclist. Over and over again.

Disgusted, but not surprisedThe issue seems to be that she's apparently not cycling carefully enough, potentially endangering herself and the drivers. According to the calls the police get at any rate.
I gotta admit, this doesn't quite seem like a US politics thing though.

Disgusted, but not surprisedA road system where the only way to commute is via highway is a terrible road system, hell in some countries such a road system so illegal because of how it punishes those unable to use highways/motorways.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran@Charles: You think the Clintons need to be arrested for the safety of others, despite not having done anything that's worthy of arrest? Because I don't think you read that article carefully. It says nothing about arresting the guy who's trying to encourage marching on a private citizens's home. Or about arresting the guy trying to gather a mob.
@M84: I think that link is also broken because I'm not getting it either. But yikes, if the lady is trying to cycle to work I have to wonder why she'd use the highway. Even if it's the shortest path that's like, right next to cars going at the least forty miles an hour with no stoplights.

This lunatic has gathered an army of other lunatics who say they will march on the Clintons' home, to demand the arrest of Hillary Clinton.
