Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There's also the possibility of proving through endurance that Barr's not going to turn over the documents regardless of how long they hold him, which is a defense to contempt (stupid, I know, but that's the law as it stands - IANAL). On the other hand, either Congress would have to accept the defense or it would have to be appealed (I'm pretty sure there is an appeal mechanism of some kind, to contest constitutional issues if nothing else, but I don't know how it would work).
Regarding Barr and contempt, I've seen this somewhat sceptical article
which however also says Congress also has the power to arrest or jail people who don’t comply, but that hasn’t happened in almost a century. which IMO is the correct move.
Pompeo said melting sea ice present new opportunities for trade: https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/06/politics/pompeo-sea-ice-arctic-council/index.html
Is it a bad thing that I wish he would drop dead?
I just wish Pompeo wasn't in a position of power or influence anymore.
And I see this administration has gone on to a new stage of climate change denialism. They're currently in the "climate change might be good for us!" stage.

Disgusted, but not surprisedSeriously though, Pompeo's comment is garbage. This whole anti-environment attitude in this administration is really sickening, and his comment is incredibly tone deaf/outright dismissive after the research announced recently that millions of species are probably going to die in 30 years at the rate we're going.

What the comment is, is priviliged.
Pompeo's remark, and other similar remarks by people like Putin, are probably true to an extent. If you happen to be the right person — a wealthy person who owns newly arable land or newly opened shipping routes — you probably can enrich yourself by exploiting climate change while avoiding the worst of the negatives.
The underlying message of Pompeo's remark, basically, is that climate change is a problem for poor people to worry about.
Yes, they do because of this actual issue.
And it's been used more recently than that.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. On that subject, if I'm reading the relevant laws correctly, then Trump can't actually appoint some rando as Acting Attorney General so long as Barr is still officially on the job, whether he's in jail or not.
Nadler says the vote is going forward. He also said that Trump "wants to make himself king, and Congress cannot permit that."
Trump has officially invoked Executive Privilege to keep the full, unredacted Mueller Report out of the hands of the Democrats in the House
. So now the Mueller Report will have to go through the courts for Congress to see it, though that now looks like a longer shot. However, this won't stop holding Barr in contempt of Congress, as Eric Holder was still held in Contempt even though Obama did the same thing regarding Operation Fast and Furious.

As impeachment is a topic we’ve been told to drop I’m not gonna touch that.
On how long Barr or anyone else gets for contempt, I believe the sentence is indefinite. They are held until they attend the hearing/hand over the documents. There’s no fixed sentence, it’s just jail time until he does what he was told to do.
