The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

White House orders Mc Gahn not to comply with congressional subpoena

I hope that all those Congressional staffers have a good template for Contempt paperwork, might save em some time.

You might as well call it what it is - a poll tax in the form of the ability to get to the polling station.

If your "local" polling station requires you to drive, and no one in your family can drive / afford a taxi then I guess you are just out of luck this time.

([nja] mid post)

On the one hand, it is utterly despicable. On the other hand, you have to admire the lengths that the GOP will go to knock out troublesome demographics with almost surgical precision.

So I hear Wednesday is Congress “voting on” charging Barr with contempt of Congress, not actually charging it. How long will they drag their feet? This is too much.

Procedure is important, doing it wrong (and giving Barr a defense) is worse than doing nothing.

The thing is they’re not doing anything. They have been doing procedure after procedure with no end in sight.

[up][up]What do you want them to do then? Pound the gavel and arrest Barr on the spot?

My assumption was that once they vote the outcome becomes immediate, so if they vote to charge him on Wednesday then he’s officially charged with contempt of Congress, he presumably then gets a limited amount of time to surrender himself for arrest before the capital police are sent to bring him in by force.

"The thing is they’re not doing anything. They have been doing procedure after procedure with no end in sight."

They're doing what they're supposed to do. Unless you were hoping for Jerry Nadler to suddenly become a loose cannon cop who doesn't play by the rules this was always the best case scenario.

As cathartic as it might be to see Nadler chomp on a cigar and toss on his shades while a building explodes behind him with Barr being dragged along in cuff... Actually hold on. Let me savor that image for a while.

This is the problem. Procedure is slow, and people want things to happen now.

As an LEO, your passive job is to inspire a feeling of safety and security in the public and your active job is to defuse criminal activity in progress.

That's untrue, legally speaking. The police have no duty whatsoever to stop a crime in progress. Their job is to arrest people who have committed a crime, not to stop crimes from being committed. The police can totally just stand there watching someone get murdered without lifting a finger, as long as they arrest the murderer afterward.

[up] Well, sort of. They don’t have a legal duty to prevent crimes that have not yet happened, such as the murder in the case that established that ruling, but if you’re on duty you’re required to respond to any breach of public order as best you can.

Police are however under no legal obligation to put their lives at risk.

So if they decide that stopping a breach of public order is dangerous they don't have to do anything.

Yeah, the key word there is “as best you can”. If you’re a police officer and you come across a rioting crowd while you’re by yourself you wouldn’t be expected to jump in. In that case, the best way for you to respond to that breach of public order would be to keep yourself safe and radio for backup.

Wow, I actually didn't know that either. That is horrifying.

I guess we can chalk that up as another symptom of our country's emphasis on punitive retribution over prevention and rehabilitation.

[up] It’s more to shield police from liability than anything else. You wouldn’t be able to prosecute an expected (one that hasn’t yet been planned or attempted) crime in court and could end up in trouble for trying.

They should have sent a poet.
