The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Probably because someone would have to actually press charges against them first. I guess Buttigieg would be able to make a case against them, but he's got a campaign to run.

Trump wants Asylum Seekers to pay for their Asylum; specifically, he's signed a memorandum that demands the Department of Homeland Security to begin demanding fees for Asylum and Employment Authorization Applications, which are currently free. The memorandum also demands that the Department come up with a plan, in 90 days, to have all Applications filled in 180 Days (except for certain exceptional cases), and that he's trying to get the Department to reassign officials to fasten up the Application process.

Considering these Immigrants are incredibly poor, and whatever money they get usually goes to whoever can help them get to the US the safest/cheapest, this is just going to force these people to stay underground and actually join criminal organizations. This is a terrible idea, and another sign of proof that Trump hates illegal immigrants with a passion.

Not that we really needed more proof to confirm that Trump hates undocumented immigrants. Not that it stops him from putting them to work on his own properties, of course.

I'm sure Flynn and Cohen wish this were true.

Mike Flynn sold out our country and in return will face about six months in jail, estimates suggest. Eventually. He still has yet to see the inside of a prison cell and, in fact, was released without having to post bail immediately after his conviction.

His sentencing was to be in December, but it was postponed on account of his agreement to cooperate with Mueller, so he's pretty much been free to chill at home and go about his life for the last year or so. But now that the Mueller Report is out, we can expect Flynn to have to report to a sentencing judge again to receive his slap on the wrist at some point in the near-ish future.

Jacob Wohl has already been convicted of fourteen counts of securities fraud...and made to pay five-figure restitution.

I don't know what state Wohl lives in, but most states don't have criminal defamation statutes. If he does live in one, though, I'd be all for Buttigieg pressing charges. A lawsuit would be meaningless - it'd give publicity and be paid off by donors.

Who Takes A Hit Now That Biden’s In The Race?

This is pretty much following my prediction for Joe Biden and why I think he's the most likely to lead and take the nomination in the primaries. I support Warren and Bernie over him but Joe is the character who is carrying the most, "let's not make the old folks nervous" feeling that is still a major factor in the Democratic party.

Black, White, and probably Latino voters who don't necessarily want big changes but don't want the nightmare of Trump's racism and stupidity fueled campaign are going to gravitate to Joe Biden for the fact that he comes off as, "sensible adult in the room with proven track record." It's also between Warren and Biden for superdelegates and the support of the DNC as people who are the Establishment of it.

Biden is easily a candidate who looks like he can do the job and not be an embarrassment that look means more than policies for a lot of folk. Now if he can avoid his Prince Phillip levels of gaffes then he'll be fine.

Rachel Maddows had an interesting segment in which she pointed out the huge gender disparity in Biden's and Bernie's campaign. In: They have huge support from males, but not a lot of support from females. And that is kind of a problem, because female voters might be the most important demographic you need to get to win in 2020.

Going by FiveThirtyEight: The thing about women is that they are no different from men at the ballot box. So white women voted mostly for Trump like white men, black women like black men, young women like young men and so on. There are some distinctions but they are trends, not a separate identity.

[up] Sure, but it is a group which makes up more than half of the population. The female vote DOES make a difference, if you can encourage the female voters to go to the ballot box, that is. Also, recent numbers have shown that Trump is slowly loosing especially the female vote, for various reasons.

The problem is that there isn’t a single “female vote”, because there are so many women they don’t tend to act as a single voting block, there’s a segment of women who do vote based on women’s issues but unlike LGBT, Black or other voter groups, women voting based on that element of their identity aren’t a big chunk of women voters.

A lot of black voters vote based on their identity as a black person, a lot of LGBT voters based on their identity as LGBT, a lot of Evangelical voters vote based on their identity as evangelical, a lot of business owners vote based on their identity as a business owner.

Similar to how White Identity voters aren’t close to being all white voters Women Identity voters aren’t close to being all women voters.

Now for the primary if Bernie and Biden are doing badly with female democrats that’s going to hurt them, because something like 60% of democrat primary voters are women, but if they’re just alienating one segment of women they may be fine the same way that they can afford to alienate a segment of men.

[up] A lot of the gras root movements are pushed by females, too. It would be naive to think that women won't have a pretty strong voice in this election.

And remember, this upcoming election won't be just about getting the democratic votes, it will be largely decided by how many non-voters will be activated by each party.

From 538:

Democrats Are Stifling Their Liberal Wing’s Biggest Ideas

The article does point out that progressives are having some impact even if they aren't getting through major progressive legislation. And that could simply be due to the Democratic Party having only held the House for four months. The article also points out that it's only logical for Pelosi to not want to spend time and effort on the GND and Medicare-for-all when they have zero chance with a GOP-controlled Senate and Trump.

But so far, the party’s “Super Progressive” wing, as I think of it, has had substantially less influence on the congressional agenda than the House Freedom Caucus had in 2017 and 2018, when Republicans controlled the chamber. For example, the conservative bloc forced the House to adopt its proposal for repealing major parts of the Affordable Care Act after it blocked legislation that had largely been written by then-Speaker Paul Ryan. Members of the caucus also pushed their fellow House Republicans to pass a resolution attacking the Justice Department over its handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of e-mail as a secretary of state.

I chalk this up to Nancy Pelosi being a considerably more capable politician than Paul Ryan.

Oh the women’s identity movement is a solid voting block and one that’s important, I just wanted to warn against getting it conflated with women voters, it’s like conflating Christian Identity voters (a key republican demographic that has a huge primary presence and whose turnout at a general can be key) with voters who are Christian. The fact that republicans dominate Christian Identity voters (who are largely white evangelicals) doesn’t mean that Christians voters (70% of all Americans) go there way.

Trump is now suing Deutsche Bank and Capital One, to stop them from releasing his personal information to Congress, who had issued subpoenas for said records.

There is absolutely something criminal he is hiding at this point. All these Subpoenas and Lawsuits Trump is issuing to stop his Taxes and Financial Records from being seen should be investigated.

It doesn't have to be criminal, necessarily, even though it's hard to imagine anything else that would trigger such vehement opposition from Trump. But he's enough of a narcissist that he might well regard his financial lies as the biggest component of his public persona. He stands to lose not just the Presidency, depending on whether Congress has the balls to impeach him, but his entire business empire: everything that makes Trump Trump. That would break him.
