Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There is only one problem with the collapse of the NRA: if that one shuts down, a new organization (likely far more fanatical) will take its place. So, in all reality, it is arguably a bad thing, since a political vacuum will be made.
Wait a second: How on earth did I even get here?Point taken.
However, the vacuum will exist, and given the NRA will still have support, it would likely continue to persist in one shape or form. Who knows what happens to it, the organization would most likely restructure its leadership and contest an action on the federal level. There are many other possibilities that I have not mentioned since I have not explored them all yet.
Wait a second: How on earth did I even get here?Seriously, Sci Fi Slasher, the points you make have value, but why exactly can't you make them without screaming/being sarcastic? It's very off-putting.
so this Vox headline compared Joe to Hiliary,no really
"Joe Biden is the Hillary Clinton of 2020"
"Americans want outsiders, reformers, and fresh faces, not politicians with decades of baggage."
Don't most politicians have baggage regardless? Also, probably fairer to compare Elizabeth Warren to Hilary but whatever
have a listen and have a link to my discord server![]()
Skim read the article, sounded like someone has an axe to grind but trying to dress it up as sober analysis.
My take is that Biden could end up as Romney 2012.
See, if he holds his position as a front runner than I see him having to take on the others as and when they come into favour. He'll tack to the left to do it, but it will always be with an eye to tack back to the center for the general election.
It's old school US politics. I'm a little sceptical because I would say rallying the base is more important now in this polarised era - but on the flip side would the anti-Trump feeling be enough to get the base out and thus Biden could chase the independents / help win purple senate seats?
That kind of puts things in perspective.
Tbh, it seems like the primary if you're registered is when you need to get critical of who you want, because I'm voting Democrat anyway whomever is up on the ballot.
Feels weird to unquestioningly go straight ticket no matter what, but what can you do with today.
Biden's politics are similar to Bill's, but the way the 2020 primary is playing out reminds me a lot of 2016— We've got an old, experienced party politician that people are just sort of expecting to win, despite the fact that they're really not all that popular with anyone. And then the left is gathering around Sanders, despite the fact that he clearly won't be able to win
@Sci Fi Slasher: Seriously. For the love of god, you have good points, but you come off as an elitist dick about, like others here have said.
Watch SymphogearPod Save America mentioned that both Biden and Trump are going to run on nostalgia for the good ol' days.
The key difference being that Trump's version is the mythical 1950's where white people are the majority, minorities don't get uppity, and women are in the kitchen.
While Biden's version is going back to when Obama was president. Because what Democrat and swing voter wouldn't give their left leg to go back to then? The joke was that Biden's slogan could be, "Make America 2016 Again!"
Intersectionality also means that even non-white people can be really shitty to other non-white people. Even if you want to argue that Bernie experiences religious bigotry because he's Jewish, he does not experience significant racial bigotry because he's white. Even if he did, that doesn't change the fact that Sanders as a person has shown to be generally ignorant or insensitive to the realities of racial and gender bigotry.
Just because someone is of a discriminated minority group does not mean they can't be assholes to other minority groups, just look at all the Republican Token Black Guys and Token Gays.

According to how 538 scores endorsements, we should.
The 2020 Endorsement Primary
— the point scale is on the right side. Former nominees are rated at 5 points, alongside former national party leaders and 2020 candidates who have dropped out.

Disgusted, but not surprisedWould you rather
1)A Democrat is elected President but the Republicans now have both houses and the democrats lose what they've gained.
Or
The Republican President remains but both houses are controlled by the Democrats
In both cases, neither can make changes (outside of say, executive decisions) without being blocked by the opposite majority party,so I guess the real question is which lame duck do you want? Bearing in mind if your newly elected president can't really do anything in their first term it can effect their chases of being reelected

have a listen and have a link to my discord serverWe've dealt with a Republican-controlled Congress before, and it was nowhere near as devastating in terms of international presence, soft power, and respectability as Trump's Presidency has been. Even if we have to have a Republican President in the second scenario, continuing with Trump is unthinkable.
It's been fun.Like this is a choice. I'd want Trump out. At least then we wouldn't have to be assaulted with his scowling mug and obnoxious comments every single day. I mean, he'd still probably try to stay in the news every day regardless, but the press would be under no obligation to cover him because he wouldn't be the president.

As are all Jewish citizens of the US of A.
Observant or not.
Bernie can be both threatened by white supremacists and benefit from white privilege at the same time, you know.
'Whiteness' is a social construct and it means different things to different people, he's not white to most (anti-Semitic) white supremacists, but he's certainly white to society at large.
Angry gets shit done.
