Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

To the democratic base with much of their focus in the north-East, a Jewish person is pretty white and one of the wealthy
Hey, as a financially poor Jew, I'm just gonna call this out as completely unacceptable. Seriously, can you not? This is like, textbook "Jews have money" anti-Semitism, and it's just straight-up not true for a ton of Jewish people. Especially "beyond reproach" and "wealthy", what the fuck, guys.
That's 'cause he, like the dozen and a half other Democratic candidates, smells blood in the water. That's exactly why this primary is a circus; Trump looks like an easy win, so everyone with an ambition and a half is jumping into the feeding frenzy.
Hopefully when we get closer to the actual primary debates, we'll see some folks dropping off and writing books instead. Sometimes people join primaries just so they can bail out and sell books about the experience of running for President. In fact, this was even Trump's A-plan until he accidentally won.

X3 I should have been clearer, all assumptions about a person based on their racial/cultural background are inherently bigoted, because the very act of making an assumption about someone based on their racial/cultural background is bigoted.
I wasn’t trying to imply that the assumption is accurate or in any way right, just that it’s the one that’s being made.
In the end Bernie’s identity is perceived as one of being privileged, that’s not inaccurate but it’s not because of his Jewishness, if anything it’s probably more tied to the fact that being Jewish is a very minimal part of his identity, to many people Bernie passes as traditionally white in the WASP sense.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranManchin is leaving his current position to run for Governor. This is causing all sorts of consternation among people who thinks he's needed for the Democrats.
Except he just endorsed a bunch of Republicans running against Democrats.

Anyone who thinks that we can afford to lose a Senator, especially one from West Virginia of all places really needs to familiarize themselves with the Senate. This is terrible news.
I highly doubt his (Republican) successor would vote to defend the ACA.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangYou realize the whole point is that it's B.S. right? The entire post is how Bernie is the subject of a lot of subtle racism that denies him his Jewish heritage or makes Jewish-ness something that comes with a bunch of flawed heinous assumptions.
People are being racist to Bernie by denying him his status and treating him as a man who hasn't suffered or been judged for his ethnicity.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Hey, uh, quick heads up, if one of the Jewish posters asks people to knock it off with that comparison (that utilizes Jewish stereotypes), can we please not respond by getting annoyed or trying to explain it away like its his fault for misinterpreting? Like, I get that you didn't mean it in that way, but when I went back to double check the posts I got a similar reading to Pushover Media Critic. So, uh, at the very least it requires rewording?

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerI swear to god, Manchin.
In other shitty white man news, apparently Biden finally spoke to Anita Hill. She did not accept
his “apology.”

Wasn't trying to put him down.
He's right that it was badly phrased and I apologize. I certainly don't want to spread negative stereotypes or positives ones for that matter.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Eh...the question here is more how Bernie is perceived by the voters.
I didn't even know that he is Jewish. I know that Kushner is technically Jewish. And I say technically because him being Jewish only seems to come up whenever someone tries to claim that Trump certainly can't be an Anti-Semite. Bernie being a Jew isn't really a well-known fact.
That surprises me as it was one of the first facts I knew about him.
It comes up in every discussion of him in Kentucky.
I.e. The Crazy Jewish Socialist complete with Karl Marx comparisons.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. And I’d say that that divide rather proves the point we were trying to make, Swan might not be from the north-east of the US but I suspect that she has more cultural similarities to there than she does to the South.
Where Charles lives it matters a lot, where other lives it matters much less.
I’m now wondering if part of why Bernie lost the south in the 2016 primary wasn’t just black voters going heavily for Clinton, but the low-education white voters who backed Bernie in the mid-west staying home in the South because they didn’t like that he’s Jewish.

Oh, that Coast Guard Lieutenant who was arrested on drug running charges has turned out to be a Nazi terrorist who was planning on assassinating members of Congress and the media. His house was full of guns, explosives, and Pro-Trump media.
Both sides, am I right?
Here's the article on it: https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/20/coast-guard-officer-domestic-terror-1176806

I am not the best example since I am not even American. Maybe him being Jewish is better known if you live in the country. Plus, I have this general attitude of identifying Jews by their nationality first and foremost while treating them being Jewish more like I would treat a religion. That's because I never want German Jews as being perceived as some separate group ever again.

I actually didn't know he was Jewish either.
When it comes to representation and diversity, I agree wholeheartedly that anti-Semitism is a very serious problem. However, I don't think it's a hurdle for Sanders the way diversity is for other candidates.
Sanders being Jewish - and, to a lesser extent, Buttigieg being gay - are invisible qualities. He doesn't wear it printed on his face the way one wears ethnicity or gender. It's not out there, hovering in plain sight in every single conversation, instantly coloring the way people perceive him from the moment he steps out on stage. To the casual observer, he's just another white guy, same as the other white guys.
It would be in egregious error to say that Sanders knows nothing of oppression when he belongs to an ethnicity that was actively on the receiving end of the most horrible genocide in human history on the year he was born.
But unless he has someone walking around behind him carrying a sign that flashes "THIS MAN IS A JEW" in bright neon or, as some would have them, a Star of David pinned to his shirt, most voters aren't even going to notice. In the United States, he still benefits from the White Male Default.

Donnelly and Heitkamp are now trying to tell Dems how to be better chumps and stooges- sorry, I mean “more moderate and electable.”
Yes, both of them lost.
