Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Pete managed to piss me off again, CNN hosted town halls last night with Klobuchar, Warren, Sanders, Harris, and Buttigieg. Warren absolutely killed it IMO; lots of substantive, direct answers.
Meanwhile, Pete said he thinks detailed policy promises are “inauthentic” and said we should talk values, not “drown people in minutiae.”
If I could breathe fire I would. POLICY SHOWS VALUES.

Especially not after it gets put through amendment after amendment in Congress.
Still, not exactly a good look to immediately dismiss a primary opponent — someone you will inevitably need to get onboard in the general eiection — as "inauthentic".

To be fair to him, he didn't actually say that (going by wisewillow's description).
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanHere's CNN's takeaway for Buttigieg's townhall btw:
Takeaways from Pete Buttigieg's CNN town hall
On a side note, it seems like Buttigieg and Pence have something of a feud going on.
Pence, during his time as governor of Indiana, signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, a controversial bill that effectively allowed businesses to discriminate against gay customers.
In a subsequent interview with CNN, Pence said, "I hope that Pete will offer more to the American people than attacks on my Christian faith or attacks on the President as he seeks the highest office in the land," adding, "he'd do well to reflect on the importance of respecting the freedom of religion of every American."

Disgusted, but not surprisedIt's premature, but everyone who isn't Biden or Sanders definitely has an uphill battle.
538 is also tracking the endorsements of the candidates.
You may or may not be surprised by who seems to be leading the pack here.
On another note, it seems like Sanders currently has the most endorsements from DNC members.
So much for the DNC being rigged against him.

Disgusted, but not surprisedButtigieg‘s feud with Pence is why I’d like to see him as a VP candidate, he looks his best when standing as an opposite to Pence.
Also on 538, they’re also speaking to early state activists about who they would like to win and also who they would dislike winning. The clear leader for being disliked is Gabbard, who a lot of activists not only don’t support but also actively oppose.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranUgh. I hate that those two are our forerunners. I mean, I understand why. In addition to being the White Male Default, they both have a narrative behind them.
For Biden, it's "Would have beaten Trump in 2016 if he hadn't been too traumatized by his son's passing to run."
For Sanders, it's "Would have beaten Trump in 2016 if the DNC hadn't rigged the primary against him."
So for a lot of Democrats, this is the "third act" so to speak where one of these guys steps up out of the shadows that held him back, pounds his fists, and shows off the cool new techniques he's learned to defeat Trump once and for all.
But the problem is that they aren't action movie heroes ready for a thrilling climax. They're assholes who should be kept out of the Oval Office.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Warren and Sanders basically are the two people who seem to be running on "what they'd do" versus who they are.
Policy-wise, neither of them are bad.

How about Bernie would have beaten Trump in 2016 had he won the democratic primaries and this is the chance to finally put that theory to the practical test or to rest?
Edited by Grafite on Apr 23rd 2019 at 3:09:46 PM
Life is unfair...I'm 100% for Bernie if he gets primaried.
There's very few I wouldn't be versus Trump.
I also point out a lot of people blame Bernie for his sour grapes fans. Bernie endorsed Hillary Clinton and sometimes got booed by his own voters for that. However, he said the important thing was beating Trump.

Today the ACLU is contesting the Trump administration’s attempt to turn the census into an attack on minorities and immigrants in the Supreme Court.
I can only hope one of the Bush-appointed justices decides this would cross a line.
