Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Some notable stuff to watch out for in volume One Searchable Version of report here
Mueller then provides a *litany* of ways in which his Office was stymied in its efforts to get at the truth—explaining, in part, why many things couldn't be established beyond a reasonable doubt. This section should get *much* more attention by the media than it likely will. Here's the stated list of causes:
- FIFTH AMENDMENT INVOCATIONS
- DOJ policies on attorneys and media
- Legal privilege protected by "taint team" review
- FALSE AND INCOMPLETE INFORMATION BY TRUMPISTS
- WITNESSES AND DOCUMENTS ABROAD
- DESTRUCTION OF EVIDENCE
...Mueller essentially says that a good deal of counterintelligence information—the category of information that'd tell us whether Trump is *impeachable as a national security threat* (because he is compromised)—is absent from the Report. He also implies those probes continue.
Will keep this updated as I read it
The IRA
The IRA pages are heavily redacted, which actually makes sense, since that's more part of the Counter-Intelligence side of the investigation, but here's the important bits from what's readable: (Overall though, aside from a few segments, the redacting is still pretty light, all things considered.)
The Kremlin-backed Internet Research Agency's 100% pro-Trump propaganda campaign reached "tens of millions" of American voters, per the Mueller Report. Remember: this was an election decided in Trump's favor by... 77,000 votes.
We always knew Trump aides and allies amplified Russian propaganda, but Mueller confirms it in writing, naming Micheal Flynn, Rodger Stone, and Shaun Hannity.
Assange:
Mueller establishes that the *whole Seth Rich storyline*
concocted by Wiki Leaks—pushed by Sean Hannity—was a *concerted* effort by Wiki Leaks to *hide* that it was working with Russian military intelligence. Going to break from lawspeak a moment and say Assange is hosed.
It took FIVE HOURS from Trump saying "Russia, if you're listening" until Russian military intelligence hacks seeking exactly the material Trump had asked the Russians to provide—I seem to recall from law school that "willful ignorance" isn't a defense to aiding and abetting?
I need sleep, but I'll try to do more in the morning.

My take-aways from Abramson's thread:
- The criminal standard for "proof" is really high
- While the report is pretty damning, most of it (or at least the unredacted bits) is stuff that people who've been following, say, WTFJHT would already know
- There's also a bunch of conspiracy stuff going on involving the middle east that's barely covered in the report
- The pee-pee tape is real

From what I remember, the bed in question was the one Obama slept in once when he was president and visiting Moscow.
So what's more likely? Trump paying prostitutes to urinate on him? Or Trump paying prostitutes to urinate on a bed Obama once slept in?

We learn from history that we do not learn from historyWhile we shouldn't let it distract us from the rest of Trump's misdeeds, it does reinforce just how utterly petty Trump is. Part of the horror of Trump is the sheer pettiness of the man.
The pettiness that would drive Trump to have prostitutes pee on a hotel bed just because Obama used it once is the same pettiness that drives Trump to try and destroy everything Obama built as POTUS, such as the ACA and the Iran Nuclear Deal.
All this...because a black man roasted him at a public event (in response to Trump spreading racist birtherism conspiracies).

Disgusted, but not surprised![]()
Ah, birtherism.
That alone should have excluded Trump from any political position. Instead, so many people appear to have forgotten it happened. Because there are so many things Trump has done that people stop talking about the previous things he has done.
Which, don't forget, is by design. Overwhelming amounts of controversy makes it hard to focus on one thing, and keeps the focus on him. None of which is new, but I feel it needs repeating.

Trump is the Ugly American President. The Bully President. He combines everything wrong and ugly with the USA with the childish petty cruelty of every bully one has met in their life.
Part of why I am so disturbed by Trump being POTUS is that he reminds me too much of some bullies I've had to put up with in my youth.
It's similar to why a lot of Hollywood types don't like Trump. As Seth Macfarlane once claimed, it's because Trump reminds them too much of every asshole director, executive, producer, etc. in Hollywood. Yes, Hollywood is kind of a fucked up culture.

Disgusted, but not surprisedThe Manifest Destiny Useful Notes seems to be broken. For some reason, it's showing up as GATE: and so the Iron Pact Fought. Also, who was the Ivan who thought giving the Internet Research Agency the same acronym as the Irish Republic Army was a good idea? Has anyone done any jokes about that?

Take a few breaths, stand away from the keyboard for a thirty seconds. Maybe do a random trope selection gamble (but... tie a rope to yourself and set a timer, or you might not get any sleep).
Or, start with Occam's Razor or Golden Mean Fallacy. Come back in a little bit.
But, do come back.

here’s the thread reader app version, if that works better
It’s super detailed, and has a ton of breadth, so it’s good if you are really interested in the investigation.
I’ll see if I can find a main points version as well.
