Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

More or less no one knew anything about his policies until then. My general view is I don't particularly care about the man or woman. Barring serial murder or sex offenses, I'm pretty much only interested in what they're planning to do.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I mean, I know that people like that exist, but it's a question to be asked. Unlike people such as Candace Owens, he's not even shitting on his own group, he's just treating people who are trying to fight for the rights of people like him however they can like a damn channer.
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."To quote a queer friend, "For a lot of gay men, it's less important that they're gay than they're rich and white."
His opinion was that they were fooling themselves that they'd be welcome at the table of Sauron.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Honestly, I feel a sort of pity for Kaitlyn Jenner and Ben Carson, and types like them.
Yeah, they're terrible people, but the idea that because one belongs to X demographic they must have Y views even on issues that don't belong to that group is dehumanizing in its own way.

The West Wing brought this up and the argument was treated as valid.
But the simple fact is that if someone hates you, hates the very idea of you, and wants to destroy you—any support of them because they share some other beliefs is a fool's errand IMHO.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Attention Black People: It’s Your Fault Should Donald Trump Get Re-Elected in 2020.
White Democrats blaming black folks for electoral outcomes that they don’t like isn’t new. For a hot minute after the 2016 election, it was popular to blame black voters for Hillary Clinton’s loss to Trump. It took almost a year before many white Democrats would admit it was 53% of Clinton’s own ‘base’ of white women that pushed Trump over the top.
The sad thing is, as the article points out, black people are still probably going to overwhelmingly vote in favor of the Democratic candidate come 2020. Only to get blamed if Trump wins thanks to a majority of white people voting for him just because the black people dared to criticize Democratic candidates.
I'm also reminded that it was black people who saved us from Roy Moore becoming a Senator.

Disgusted, but not surprised
Things probably aren't going to get better for them until the entire cultural paradigm shifts enough so that a movie like Green Book doesn't win "Best Film".

Disgusted, but not surprisedThe irony being Green Book is a White Guilt movie that's ostensibly at least about racism.
It's just now a symbol of Condescending Compassion.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I know nothing about Green Book, but something I did have pointed out to me was apparently the White guy was nominated (won?) for best lead actor, while the black guy was nominated (won?) for best supporting actor, even though the roles in the actual movie were reversed.
I'm not really sure how to describe that.
The very short version is it's an ostensibly uplifting story about how a Lower-Class Lout Italian American driver is hired by a black musical genius to take him through the Deep South. The (mildly) racist driver learns to be better and the musical genius becomes his good friend. It's not a terrible plot for a movie by itself if somewhat eye rolling.
The problem is that it's ostensibly a true story, actually Based on a Great Big Lie with the family of said driver having created an elaborate story about how their dad was good friends with a real life musical genius when he actually barely knew the guy (though this has been disputed by some of his friends). It also makes said musical genius, Don Shirley, a supporting character in the film despite being a fairly magnificent figure.
Like when the only Nelson Mandela movie made was about Matt Damon's soccer team.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Or the flick about the Stonewall riots that was made to feature a White Male Lead.
Do not obey in advance. So, yeah, it looks like Trump's admin is gearing up to push the narrative.
Barr has moved the handing off the redacted Mueller report to Congress about an hour to two hours after his press conference.
Giving Barr about 90 minutes to twist the narrative.
Also, Pompeo was at the Department of Justice meeting with Barr.

*twitch* if you are talking about Invictus then it was about the South African National Rugby team.
I get your complaint but assuming that a sport based movie not in the US is going to be about soccer is a bit lazy. Especially given that traditionally in South Africa soccer was the "Black" sport and rugby was the "White" sport. That's what made Mandela's actions so important - by embracing the rugby team as he did he was acting to bring together the two very separate communities into one nation.
Also, Idris Elba did star in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
Because they are. Gay Republicans are okay with the anti-gay agenda because it's not likely to fall on them. They're rich, white, and well-insulated from any consequences coming their way for being gay, and allying with Dominionists allows them to protect their interests as rich white guys. And being rich, white and gay lets the other fascists pretend to be totally not homophobic because look they have gay friends.
Seems the Medicare-for-all thing has some investors spooked. Not all that surprising really.
From Bloomberg: Health Stocks Crumble as Fears of ‘Medicare for All’ Snowball
Investors tend to be scared easily by anything that might shake up the industries in which they invest their money in, and Medicare-for-All if it comes to pass would almost certainly do that.

Disgusted, but not surprisedBloomberg: Rick Perry planning to leave Trump admin.

You guys talk as if pre-Netanyahu Israel didn't already have a very blackened record in human rights and international law when it comes to dealing with Palestinians in particular and anyone remotely anti-Israel in general. For all you know, Buttigieg was talking about Israel's "national security" policies in general and not just the ones under the current Netanyahu administration.
