Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yes. And I am worried about the purpose. We are talking about a president who creeps on his own daughter, peaks into the dressing room of underage pagan contestants and has contact to a worrying number of known paedophiles. So is the obvious purpose the sole purpose? In a way I hope that it isn't more than just terrify asylum seekers away.
...
Uhm. The purpose is cruelty and white supremacy. Which entails assault, sexual assault, kidnapping children, incarceration in camps, etc. Of Latinx regardless of color and of other black and brown people. White not-Latinx undocumented immigrants aren’t getting hunted down and deported away from their children.

The ACLU said they could probably find the missing children themselves in a few weeks if the administration turned over the information. Trump's people are dragging their heels and stalling as long as possible.
And Trump's last straw with Nielson was that she kept telling him they couldn't go back to separating families. He just really likes doing it.
They have been trying to build new cities in California, just for the record. You may be shocked to know that fire, flooding, and earthquakes aren't the reason why they tend to stall out.
Also, Nevada may not be crowded but its water supply definitively is.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanCan I just say, the worst part of all this is that for so many people, this still doesn’t cross the line? I’m not even talking about the millions of people who voted for Trump and will vote for him again next year. I’m talking about the 30% or so of eligible voters who just don’t vote, or who vote third party. Children are being literally tortured, and I know people who still say “both sides are the same.”
I always thought that if something like this would happen, it would be because the politician(s) behind it would have been the best at creating a façade of good intentions, but instead we have the most openly vulgar, virtueless, violent orator and already known to be corrupt businessman at the helm, and people who aren’t his supporters still don’t care enough to take a stand.

Blame generations of people demonizing politicians and politics in general.
Remember that one of the reasons Trump appealed to some people was because he was not a career politician. The other reasons of course were racism and sexism and "fuck poor people".
It's not all bad at least. While it hasn't been a wakeup call for way too many people, it has been a wakeup call for some. More people are campaigning, more people are protesting, and (more importantly) more people are voting. It's still far from 100% voter participation, but it's an improvement.

Disgusted, but not surprised
Sadly, I am well aware of how true that is. When I was younger, I bought in to that hook, line, sinker, but at least I took note when this administration started. I guess I was just hoping that more people would respond like me, but that’s just too idealistic and probably narcissistic of me.
Edit:
I guess we’re on the same page then.

My musician pageNot to mention just how much news there is to keep up with all the time. I feel like Net Neutrality alone takes up more time to keep up with than I should spend. I just hope that my theory that everything we can see is just a distraction for what we can’t see isn’t accurate.
My musician pageI realize this post is relatively old but I have to ask, what are you referring to? Because I was willing to overlook her unfortunate Prison policies but this would be a bridge too far.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangHonestly, I'd be lying if I said my life has been visibly affected by Trump's presidency. I guess I'm really lucky in that way. The thing for me is how great the changes I can't immediately see, like all the stuff that gets brought up here are.
I'd be very surprised if anyone in my family was a Trump supporter, but as for the people in my genera surroundings, I often wonder about who does or doesn't support Trump. I don't get as anxious about it as many of you seem to, because for whatever reason that's just not my way.
I am not quite sure if Trump enjoys to be cruel, or if he "just" lacks empathy and enjoys the attention he gets for being so cruel. I am leaning towards the latter. Plus, he is simply petty, so he likes to do what others told him NOT to do.
Not that it makes any difference.
Hey, maybe we should tell him that the democrats would be very angry if he put people back on their food stamps. He might do it then.
She decided that she knew better than the Transgender prisoners in question what surgery was necessary for them or not.
She opposed two of them from getting Gender Confirming Surgery, saying that the state was already paying for HRT and that it was enough.
Her record on these matters is otherwise fine, but that alone leaves a rather important blotch of red ink there for a lot of people. Its a significant (but not the only) reason as to why she's not in my top rankings.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerOh, that's bad.
Yeah, I'd much prefer Gillibrand or Warren or maybe even Sanders. That's just unacceptable.

I just maintain the hope that things can improve. Not necessarily will improve — if 2016 taught us anything it's that we can't take social progress and decency for granted — but can.
If I really believed things were hopeless I wouldn't bother to vote.

Disgusted, but not surprised@wisewillow Sorry, I meant no offense. I am just frustrated. I had started to hope that the US democracy might make it to 2020, but I am not so sure anymore. Trump is systematically killing it. He is replacing judges left and right, he is undermining the press, he is crippling the agencies, and if anyone thinks that the election in 2020 will be in any way fair, said someone is extremely naive.
Meanwhile children are held who knows where suffering through who knows what, people are taking off the help they need to survive, the environment is destroyed and the rich are getting even richer.

The GOP has expanded the power of Presidents ever since 9/11 and people had a chance to roll that back but they didn't.
Trump's power hit a major snag with the Democratic House, though, so I think people should note a lot of his decrees are screaming in the wind.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. Not for lack of trying, mind you. Obama tried to roll back Executive power but Congress basically refused his efforts.
One step forward, two steps back. He also managed to overcome the problem of the Supreme Court by getting enough of his people in there, ending their efforts to thwart his actions. A lot of shit - up to and including his travel ban which we were declaring victory over in 2017 - have been passed on party-line judicial votes.
So we gained the House, but we've also lost the Supreme Court. We went from having only one chamber in Washington that would stand against Trump to having one arguably less powerful chamber in Washington that would stand against him.
In 2016, I called this the dying gasp of white supremacy. I realize now that I was being hopelessly optimistic. This is a second wind.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.

California's got a lot of space too. But good luck building a brand new city in the state of fire, flooding, and earthquakes.
