The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Even people within DHS (who are otherwise right-wing hardliners) are wary about this purge, because not everyone is qualified to do those jobs. Trump's purge is going to degrade the long-term health of his already imploding immigration agenda.

Personally I liked Colbert’s read on the report summarisation, while it didn’t cover the details of how all we got was a summarisation of a report on a single criminal thread (for that you need actual journalists like 538) it wa funny to see him with the big board, it was all a elaborate show to make the point that even if Barr was telling the truth it didn’t change anything about Trump being a terrible president.

I heard that Noah actually apologised and bought the entire summarisation at face value, which I’m not surprised by, him granting the premis of rightwing propaganda during the election is part of what turned me off him (I’m talking specifically about him often going “even if Clinton is the second coming of Nixon she’s still the lesser evil” and thus granting the premis that Clinton was an evil).

Noah's bit was almost identical to Colbert's iirc. "Even if the report clears Trump, he's still an awful president."

I know that Colbert’s ‘apolagy’ was just sarcastic snarking, was Noah’s that as well?

Maher honestly seemed to cover it pretty well, but in the end shitting on Trump is one thing he’s good at, it’s certainly better than listening to him get outraged about oversensitivity (pot, kettle much?), hate on religious people or hate on anyone under the age of 45.

He's remarkably fond of his pet issues. His interview with Buttigeg seemed like a huge squandering of time because of dumb questions like "aren't millennials fragile snowflakes?"

Buttigeg's response, "we fought the War on Terror", wasn't really reassuring either. It plays straight into toxic masculinity, among others.

I remember that Colbert made a point of going to a white board which listed all the investigations which are currently conducted against Trump (which is a long list) and then scratched out "collusion" (or whatever it was the summary of a report cleared Trump off)- It was maybe the best take on it, other than Rachel Maddow's, naturally.

I'm surprised there hasn't been any attempts on Trump's head. Considering he just fired his Secret Service director...

Well, keep in mind the vast majority of terrorism in the US is right-wing so while he's a vile human being, he's a vile human being who appeals to the people most likely to commit violent terrorist acts.

Like his predecessors, I'm sure there have been attempts. But the Secret Service is good at what they do, so most of them are stopped very early on, and quietly.

Alt-Right news sources in general are very careful about tiptoeing around what they're actually saying. A lot of work goes into getting their point across without being legally liable for it. It can be a subtle distinction. For instance

This is libel: "Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is a radical Muslim terrorist who helped carry out a thwarted attack on Chicago. However, her plans were thwarted by our brave policemen."

This is not libel (assuming the stories are true): "Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is a Muslim. Radical Muslim terrorists attempted to carry out an attack on Chicago but were thwarted by our brave policemen.

See the difference? By mentioning Omar's religious affiliation and immediately segueing into a story about terrorism, it creates a mental association between Omar and terrorism without ever directly saying that she's a terrorist.

This is also not libel: Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is a radical Muslim terrorist. (Two days later in small print) Retraction: We said Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is a terrorist and that isn't true. Our bad.

I also want to note: Trump has on occasion talked about wanting to improve libel laws and make it easier to go after people for spreading lies about you, but he's never acted on it beyond occasionally talking about the idea. It's believed that every time he brings this up, Republicans remind him that FOX News would feel the blow of stricter libel laws the hardest.

Indeed, the whole reason FOX is able to operate the way they do is due to the Fairness Doctrine's revocation.

I feel like the libel laws he's interested in would harm his critics more then fox news, since he hates criticisms

He feels like that too, but that's because he forgets how full of shit his favorite FOX shows are. That's why he keeps bringing it up every few months or so.

Yeah, the intent of him saying that is "I can just make everyone else stop saying mean things about me". The unintended consequence is "FOX News will have to shut the fuck up".

Phrasing it that way implies that he's correct in his belief that it would make people stop saying mean things about him. Which isn't a safe assumption, because saying things that are 100% true definitely isn't libel.

No, that's still unintended consequences for him. That they'd be perfectly visible to so many other people, and wouldn't help with his primary motivation doesn't change that.

Then the rest of the media outlets could safely ignore it too. It's not like Time Warner or Jeff Bezos are short of cash if money is all it takes to skirt whatever dumb libel laws Trump spends 12 seconds thinking up.

Also, Judge riles against Trump on asylum case.

A federal judge ruled that Trump can't force asylum seekers to be stuck in Mexico while they await their cases to be heard.

"Seeborg said his ruling turned on the narrow question of whether the Trump administration had followed administrative law in implementing the policy."

""The legal question is not whether the MPP is a wise, intelligent, or humane policy, or whether it is the best approach for addressing the circumstances the executive branch contends constitute a crisis," wrote Seeborg."

Eric Swalwell, a Representative from California, joins the Democratic Primary.

Because WHY NOT just have another person join? I thought we had too few to begin with!

He seems to focus mostly on Gun Control and on Russian interference (he's on the House Intelligence Committee), and as an incidental note endorsed Martin O'Malley in 2016. Because why not?

The Californian was elected to the House in 2012 after defeating former Democratic Rep. Pete Stark, a 40-year-incumbent, in a bitter primary battle. Stark refused to debate his upstart challenger, leading Swalwell to hire an actor to impersonate him and speak only in actual Stark quotes while wearing fake bushy grey eyebrows.
