Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Daily Show vid so far (I'll get what I can before I have to leave for class):
-Bernie talking about bringing previously "radical" ideas (universal healthcare, $15 minimum wage, etc.) into the mainstream
-Running to challenge major industries such as Wall Street, pharmaceutical and insurance companies, and the fossil fuel industry, explains the meaning of his campaign slogan
-Attempting to address the "old white man" criticisms (not very successfully, honestly), says ideas and agenda are more important
-Explains why he thinks young people who don't normally vote support him, chalks it up to young people being more progressive than ever while also living in poverty, says his messages resonates with them as a result
-Explains his decision to do a Fox News town meeting, says Fox News different from Fox News viewers, wants to try and reach them, explain his lies (good luck)
-Addresses concerns about his age/health, essentially says he's fine
-Explains decision to oppose bill to strengthen ACA, says it won't pass Senate, wants Medicare for All instead
That's all you get for now cause I gotta go.

It's posts like this that make me wonder if "centrist" these days is just shorthand for "not as far to the left as I'd like them to be".

i'm tired, my friendGiven that Trevor's humour comes straight out of the Grahamstown Festival's
fringe, I find the accusation of centrism absolutely hilarious.
And, so would he.
Apparently, the great South African art of using The Golden Rule both sincerely and insincerely is a such rare thing, irony has escaped classification.
And it's just not practicable in the current US political climate where the basic position of any politicians is "THEIR SIDE BAD!!!!!".
Republicans knee jerk hate everything Democrats do and Dems have to do the same just to mitigate the Right's damage.

Centrist has effectively been reduced to "Not as Left/Right Wing as I want and therefore I do not like."
That's legitimately it. Because everyone must be Left Wing or Right Wing, dammit!
I hold the secrets of the machine.I am a Centrist. I am neither a liberaterian, nor particularly prone to make the mistake to move the centre to please the conservatives.
Not that I am denying that a lot of so called centrists are effectively right-wingers who don't want to admit that they are right-wingers. But that is more a deliberate misuse of the word.

He's been openly antisemitic for years, and also pro Israel. This is not uncommon.
The pro-Israeli lobby's bipartisan power, and the democratic response to Ilhan's criticisms a few weeks ago, were deplorable. The attacker wasn't inspired by Democrats, and he may well have done the same thing if they had chosen to defend her.
I'm annoyed that he called Ilhan a "radical Muslim" to justify what he did. By what standard is she radical? Do words not mean things anymore?
