Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Charles: That is the story you may have come to, but not the one people in general have coalesced around, certainly not me. Too bad we'll never get a trial to clear it up because of a misconduct of justice.
Life is unfair...Nunes sending eight criminal referrals to Attorney General William Barr
https://www-m.cnn.com/2019/04/07/politics/devin-nunes-justice-department/index.html
Appearing on Fox's "Sunday Morning Futures," Nunes said five of the referrals are related to lying to Congress, misleading Congress and leaking classified information. The other referrals, Nunes said, are allegations of lying to the FISA court that approves foreign surveillance warrants, manipulating intelligence and what he described as a "global leak referral," which Nunes said wasn't tied to one individual.
"We couldn't really send these criminal referrals over without an Attorney General in place, so we are prepared this week to notify the Attorney General that we are prepared to send those referrals over and brief him if he wishes to be briefed. We think they're pretty clear, but as of right now this is, this may not be all of them, but this cleans up quite a bit. We have eight referrals that we are prepared to send over to the Attorney General this week," Nunes said.
Criminal referrals from Congress to the Justice Department are effectively requests for a criminal investigation from the Justice Department and the FBI.
DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is meeting with Trump and expected to resign, CBS News reports.
She's doing exactly what he's been telling her to do. Its just all ineffective at best or a horrible violation of decency and civil rights at worst that's just blown up in Trump's face.
Aaand, she's out. Just got the update that she'll be "stepping down."

By Freya's tits, this administration has a worse turnover rate than a goddamn Mc Donalds.

My guess is that at least one of those people will be Comey. The Republicans have wanting to get him on 'leaking classified information' grounds for a while. They've also said they want to get Cohen on 'lying to Congress' and they've wanted Carter Page on 'lying to FISA' (about the Steele dossier).

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Patrick W. Carlineo, Jr., 55, of Addison, New York, threatened to kill Omar because of her Muslim faith, according to a criminal complaint and accompanying affidavit.
Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, is one of the first two Muslim women serving in Congress after being elected in the 2018 midterms.
A call was placed to Omar's Washington, DC, office on March 21, an FBI agent stated in the affidavit.
During the call, an individual, who identified himself as Pat Carlineo, said to a staff member: "Do you work for the Muslim Brotherhood? Why are you working for her, she's a (expletive) terrorist. I'll put a bullet in her (expletive) skull."
Omar's office referred the threat to the US Capitol Police, which began an investigation with the FBI.
Carlineo sounded angry during the call but provided the spelling of his name and contact information, the affidavit said.
He was later interviewed by authorities where he stated that he was a patriot, that he loves President Donald Trump, and "that he hates radical Muslims in our government," the affidavit stated.
He had initially claimed he had told Omar's office, "If our forefathers were still alive, they'd put a bullet in her head."
When shown an email with the quote from the call regarding calling Omar a "terrorist" and threatening to kill her, Carlineo first replied that is not what he had said, according to the affidavit.
He later admitted to authorities he may have said something like that but was unsure.
I was wondering when someone would try to work in some Clinton paranoia here.
Seriously, a Trump supporting bigot issues a death threat to a Democratic Representative, and your first response is to try to blame this on Chelsea Clinton?

Disgusted, but not surprised
She's a Clinton, that makes her culpable by default.
Yes, because it was Chelsea Clinton who really ignited the firestorm of Islamophobia in the United States. I don't see how anyone could say differently, after all her hateful and ignorant comments, the unconstitutional and discriminatory travel bans she implemented, and all the harmful rhetoric she's spewed from the highest office in the country for the last three years.
Oh. Wait, I've just been informed that all of that was not Chelsea Clinton, but was in fact Donald Trump. Easy mistake to make, though, clearly.
It's been fun.

I’ve actually heard arguments, from professional hairdressers, mind you, that the licenses exist for a reason. You don’t want to hire a hairdresser who doesn’t know what they’re doing.
