Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So apparently Assange is on the verge of getting kicked out of the embassy
, which has British police now surrounding the building in expectation of it.
And funny enough, it's allegedly because he bit the hand that feeds him:
Well, the guy has made an enemy of a fair few global powers, plus there's the notion that he might try sneaking away in some form or other (have a bunch of white guys dressed in a similar manner all exit at once, etc.) that could be too complex for just a couple of beat cops. And that said, I may be mischaracterizing the situation - the article just says "Officers with London's metropolitan police department were stationed outside the embassy Friday morning".

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"And sometimes no response is the best response
You have learn how not to feed them attention, don't ignore them because the problem won't go away but you can starve them of attention by denying a response that they crave

> which has British police now surrounding the building in expectation of it.
Is that really necessary? It's one guy to my knowledge, you need maybe two officers to issue an arrest as he's unceremoniously booted out,but an entire squad surrounding the place is overkill

have a listen and have a link to my discord serverPrecisely. The correct counter-move is to keep the conversation fixed squarely on the part where he says abortion-seekers should be jailed and avoid the bait that is the "99 years" part.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Him running off is a non-trivial risk. Escaping from 2 police officers is relatively doable. Might as well just surround the area with the British equivalent of a SWAT team. Plus, it's not like there's much reason not too.
Leviticus 19:34>
He could still, you know, run away.
He could, but where's he going to run when he's wanted man and everyone is out for him?
A Swat team is even more unnecessary.it's not like he actually poses a threat that they need back up,it's how accidents happen

have a listen and have a link to my discord serverWell, you can do simple Clark Kenting things and stay on the run to avoid capture for a prolonged period of time.
For that matter, what's the down side of overkill? Are the police needed elsewhere?
Leviticus 19:34...will weep for the state of our union....
...and then vote Biden.
Couple things
1) As I edited above, I may have mischaracterized it - I haven't seen photos of the scene around the embassy, so I've no idea how many officers have been dispatched in response to the new situation with Assange.
2) As to why overkill might be needed, how many years has Assange been using the embassy as sanctuary? And the guy's in the intel business - what are the odds that he may have managed to obtain a fake passport to use and/or altered his appearance enough to slip the net and flee to, say, Russia? We're not exactly talking about a halfwit here, and Russia would be more than willing to give him aid as a big middle finger to the Western powers.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Yeah the Met have been cut pretty brutally the last few years and we’ve seen a surge in stabbing, we kinda need every officer we can get (well not enough to drop the unaided vision requirement, but that’s a whole other story...)
Odds on however it will just take two officers to grab him, they’ll just check everyone who leaves, if there’s a back door they maybe need another pair to cover that but that’s it.
Man I hope the Swedes are finally able to get the bastard.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranEh, it's not that strange. Gillibrand was seen as leading the charge and thus was strongly associated with the results.
I imagine the powerful (men) on the Democratic side see her as being guilty of eating one of her own, fucking scum.

I kind of doubt that - he could easily be used on various news programs to solidify how awful the West is (keep in mind that Russian media genuinely mocks the Me Too movement
, and Assange is accused of a sex crime), as well as a means to get information out there and published, and they can mix disinformation of their own in at will through the platform.
Depending on how invested the Russians may be with him, they could rather easily abet his escape - furnish the false documents, help him disguise himself, etc.
Possible, but having a useful idiot with established connections might be viewed as worth more in the long run. Definitely a Risk/Reward calculation for Putin on this one.
