The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan announces his Candidacy for the President of the United States, running as a Democrat.

There are too many Democrats running for President that don't really have a shot at winning at this point. The 2020 Primary is going to be a bloodbath...

I think the concern is that's how Trump became the Republican candidate.

Yep,too many runners at the starting line make it hard to choose a winner, everyone goes for the guy supposedly leading the front but it's the guy at the back that somehow ends up crossing the finishing line

Other way around. Trump was almost always at the front and there were so many other candidates that they divided the rest of the vote, so no one person could stand up to him.

We haven't even gotten to the primary debates yet so I'm not really concerned. That'll be when the nonstarters begin dropping out.

Yeah, since we don't have a ranked-choice system, having more candidates increases the likelihood of an unpopular asshole rising to the top.

  • Bob has 30% of the vote.
  • Alice has 70% of the vote.

Versus

  • Bob has 30% of the vote.
  • Tom has 25%.
  • Alice has 25%.
  • Jill has 20%.

Even if a majority agrees that this guy f*cking sucks, if they can't agree on someone else to put in his place, then they can wind up splitting the Sane Vote such that the asshole wins.

This is what happened to Trump, who won his party's nomination with 44.9% of the vote. 55.1% of Republicans didn't want Trump, a percentage almost equal to the 55.2% of Democrats who did want Hillary Clinton. But because Republicans couldn't agree on who they wanted instead of Trump, they split the vote against him and he won anyway.

Actually, how does the Democratic Party choose the nominee? Is it whoever had the most delegates at the end? Or is it 50% +1?

I think it's just a simple majority, same as the Republicans. It's just that the Democratic primary only had the two candidates, Hillary and Bernie, so an actual majority was needed.

[up][up][up][up][up]In Democratic primary elections, the apportionment is proportional. If you get 53% of votes, you get 53% of the delegate share. The GOP primaries are all or nothing, so there's an early threshold where the winner of the first contests builds momentum. In the Democrats' system, the actual closeness of the overall contest is maintained, so people are motivated to vote for their candidate long after he or she has fallen behind.

Not clicking on it myself either, I'm going to take a wild guess and say it's the image he retweeted of Biden groping Biden?

The projection is strong with this one. Biden is inappropriate and creepy. Trump. Is a serial rapist.

Thanks, Zephyr.

Okay, and according to Wikipedia, you do in fact need a certain number of delegates to win the nomination.

Yes, there is a point at which a candidate clinches the nomination, but the Democrats inch toward it while the GOP charges. It's something of an embodiment of the adage that a liberal meanders and a conservative marches.

So in short, what happened with Trump in the Republican primaries can't automatically happen in the Democrat primary.

Its possible that whoever already has the most delegates can secure the nomination, but not a sure thing.

Which also means what Ultimatum said earlier is also possible. Someone with very few delegates initially can end up winning the nomination as delegates start voting for different people to get someone over the finish line.

That's how Abraham Lincoln, of all people, secured the Republican nomination back in the day.

I'm not surprised that Biden is finally getting attention for his habit of touching people, and I hope he considers peoples' personal boundaries in the future. That being said, anyone who criticizes Biden but supports Trump can fuck right the hell off. There should be a special place in Hell for that level of hypocrisy.

Do not obey in advance.

Agreed. Biden sucks. Trump sucks harder. These things are not mutually exclusive.

Given a choice between Biden and Trump, I...

...will weep for the state of our union....

...and then vote Biden.

Not trying to exonerate Biden, but it is to my understanding that some local cultures in the US are actually encouraging of close physical contact as a display of affection than others. In my experience, it’s mostly with people from the Midwest or South.

Since multiple women had spoken about Biden’s actions making them uncomfortable, he definitely should have known better after all these years.
