The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"Can you imagine what a mess I would be?" were Trump's actual words when talking about why he doesn't drink

I can't imagine and I honestly don't want to either.

This might be the first time that Trump has said something that I would consider at least slightly intelligent.

I thought they had been pretty open about the GOP health care plan - Fuck The Poor.

Most of them are. But Trump did a Trump recently and said that the GOP would "soon be known as the party of healthcare".

When asked to elaborate, senior GOP officials replied, "Wait, he said WHAT now?!" It's been about a week since then; enough time for Mitch to sit him down and explain to him why they are absolutely 100% not doing that thing he said and he really needs to change his message.

[up][up]It's consistent with his personality. A highly narcissistic individual cannot stand humiliation, and to be seen drunk would be unacceptable.

Didn't one (or more?) of Trump's family members die from alcoholism? That right there is enough of a deterrent.

It's consistent with his personality. A highly narcissistic individual cannot stand humiliation, and to be seen drunk would be unacceptable.

This is also true of control freaks.

Me, personally, I can't bear the feeling of intoxication. I can feel my response times decaying, my reflexes dulling, my thought processes shutting down, and it is the worst. Whether it's drunk, stoned, or high, the sensation leaves me no longer 100% in control of my body and that is completely unacceptable to me.

I'd be surprised if Trump isn't the same way. He seems like someone who would completely lose his shit if his body was not responding to his commands in a reasonable frame of time.

Trump's general lack of impulse control would point to him being prone to addiction. If he drank, he absolutely would be an alcoholic — he intrinsically has no restraint, and would be even worse with the feedback loop of neurotransmission that develops into addiction.

Trump has seemingly no impulse control when he’s sober. I would hate to think of what’d he’d be like drunk.

In seriousness, that actually does triple my respect for him....though three times zero is what?

It's also possible that he simply dislikes the taste of alcohol. That's why I don't drink, and I have about as limited a diet as Trump does. It's a picky eater thing.

Eh. Supposedly alcohol is the kind of thing you need to acquire a taste for. Never did so myself either, partly because I've never had much of a social life so little incentive to learn, partly because I don't really trust myself with that sort of stuff.

@Tobias: "...It's been about a week since then; enough time for Mitch to sit him down and explain to him why they are absolutely 100% not doing that thing he said and he really needs to change his message.'

Ha ha, no. Mitch has every reason to be grateful for the obfuscation. Claiming that he is going to do something, do nothing, and then claim victory for doing it has been his number one go to strategy since his first day in office.

I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.

North Carolina GOP Chairman and Donor, Robert "Robin" Hayes, along with 3 other men, have been charged with Bribery and conspiracy to commit fraud to try to bribe bribe state insurance commissioner, Mike Causey (I can only assume he is a Republican), to remove specific regulations for one of the accused's business. The Commissioner then told law enforcement about the scheme. All 4 men have pleaded Not Guilty so far.

It seems like the North Carolina Republican Party has a massive corruption problem. At least Causey did the right thing and didn't go along with the bribery scheme.

EDIT: And it appears Rep. Mark Walker (R-NC6) might have actually taken bribe money for the same purposes. This could be massive, especially for 2020.

Mitch has tried repeatedly to control Trump and failed miserably every time.

Because everyone hates Mitch and the only reason he's in charge is all the people ahead of him in the Republican party have been purged or left or retired.

Speaking of which, Trump is apparently willing to close the border and tank the economy in spite of warnings to this effect, including from Mitch.

Because he's convinced that he's figured out the answer and hasn't figured out that you can't just tell other countries to do things. Even bullying on an international level requires the use of say, military or economic might. Just saying things can't compel Mexico to "control its immigration problem" anymore than they're already doing. (I don't actually know what Mexico is doing vis a vis immigration within their own borders, but really neither does Trump.)

[up][up]North Carolina seems to keep having problems. I'm surprised they haven't exploded yet.

[up][up][up]I read on Twitter today that major manufacturing plants would close within a single business week if the border was totally shutdown (including goods).

Wonder how the Rust Belt would like that?

[up][up]I'm pretty sure they'd notice that the plants shutting down would be the ones THEY worked at, all things considered. It's kind of hard not to notice your boss telling you not to come into work. (The plants would shut down because the supplies from Mexico aren't coming in.)
