Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Right, except she opposes the system on principal. That means that the entire system is the issue, and its history of use, not just specifically this one Grand Jury. And as most other grand juries don't necessarily relate to wikileaks, it would be charitable to assume that she was not referring specifically to them.

That would just justify the charge of contempt of court the judge placed on her. If she's really doing this due to having genuine contempt for the whole court system...
I think most judges would slam someone with contempt of court for this.

Disgusted, but not surprised
That would still not justify the pseudo-solitary they threw her in. I'm sorry, but no. Even if she's doing it because she genuinely disagrees with how the justice system works, which she is, that does not justify putting her back into her own private hell.
... I'm logging out of On-Topic for now, I think. I need a break.

The administrative segregation is ostensibly meant for Manning's own safety. This is apparently SOP for "high-profile" detainees such as Manning for that facility.
Now as mentioned earlier, Manning's own supporters are objecting to this by arguing that she's not a danger to other inmates (almost certainly true) and that the other inmates are not a danger to her (...this one's a bit murkier).

Disgusted, but not surprisedThere’s ways to protect an inmate besides “administrative segregation” (c’mon, it’s solitary). If she herself prefers taking her chances on getting assaulted versus staying in solitary, I think that’s a pretty damning indictment of how bad solitary is
Edited by wisewillow on Mar 31st 2019 at 12:48:44 PM
The caveat is that, unlike solitary confinement inmates, Manning is allowed visitors in the facility. Which is probably why the sheriff objects to her treatment being called solitary confinement.
Now, if her health has deteriorated to the point that she's vomiting, a case can and should be made that the facility is failing in its duty to take care of a detainee's well-being. Manning is their responsibility. At the very least she needs to have a doctor examine her.

Disgusted, but not surprisedWhile I agree that it is justified to hold her in contempt this time, I think your missing the point.
Even with visitors, most of the time she was alone, separated from every one... in her own room.
That's solitary, and that isn't justified.
Just like torture with breaks is still torture.

At least part of the issue is that the sudden switch from being alone to being with people is traumatic to her, yes? In that case, the technicality strikes me as irrelevant - whether she receives visitors or not, forcing her to be alone for extended periods of time is negatively affecting her health.

It's also possible that there could be something else wrong with her that is causing the nausea. Hence the need for a professional medical examination asap.
Several weeks now. Yeah, it's been a while.
This situation seems to be something of a clash between individual egos and pride. Manning's pride, the judge's pride, and the sheriff's pride. Manning refuses to capitulate and cooperate, the judge refuses to let disrespect for the court stand, and the sheriff refuses to acknowledge any failings of the facility.

Disgusted, but not surprisedThe problem is that I’ve yet to see a solution to this that doesn’t either declare Manning above the law, or put her life at risk. The idea that she wouldn’t be murdered the moment she was put in general population is absurd, she’s transgender, does anyone really think that the population of a local jail are going to be more progressive than the general American population (who already have an alarming tendency to murder and transgender people they come into contact with)? That’s before touching on the fact that she’s widely thought of as a traitor and is in there for defending an internationally wanted rapist.
- She can’t be let go without declaring her above the law.
- She can’t be put in general population without getting murdered.
- Shes can’t be left where she is without great suffering.
It’s a shitty situation all around, thing is it’s also one she has control of. Long term we can try and change the way American perceive transgender people so that they’re not at a high risk of being murdered in prison, but that’s not fixable overnight.
The guy in charge of the jail seems to have more concern for her life than she does, so he gets some props for that.
Biden is saying that he doesn't believe he acted inappropriately.
Which is the exact fucking problem.
Yeah and socialisation with guards won’t work (even if we can dodge the risk of guards attacking her the same as inmates would), the best I can come up with is greatly increased visititation for her as a way to combat some of the impact of being in solitary.
CNN seem to be editorialising slightly, he’s saying that he didn’t intent to but is going to listen if women say he did, which shows he’s at least willing to learn.

The subpoena is going to be authorized
Though I could see an authorised version being covered in black bars, all except the title and the report's author

have a listen and have a link to my discord serverBest possible outcome of all of this: Barr releases his redacted version and then the subpoena goes through and forces him to release the unredacted version, allowing the House to clearly identify every word that Barr tried to conceal. If he can be proven to have attempted to use redaction to protect Trump, this can then be used in a case against him.
Worst possible outcome of all of this: Barr releases his redacted version and the subpoena gets nuked by something something legal something political something something. Trump is, after all, a master of just openly doing shit, being heavily criticized for how brazenly criminal he is, and then just getting away with it and moving on to further crimes.

Adding to this, I feel like this is the "loophole presidency". That is, Trump wants to do something, people tell him he can't do that as president, then his lawyers or some level of court that agrees with him finds a loophole that allows him to do it anyway.
He's trying to see how much he can get away with in his quest to be a dictator.

some would say he succeeded his quest when he became president as it gave him presidential authority,he's able to behave like a tyrant but his rule is legitimised in his supporter's eyes by the election.

It's bullshit to have a restaurant that closes on Sundays in an airport anyway.
