The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So apparently Mueller still isn't finished after all? They didn't dismiss the Jury?

In that case, they just declared an emergency, and banned unvaccinated minors from being out in public across the river.

While I think this is great, and am glad something is finaly being done.... I am wondering how long until it gets challenged in court.

....

Can you take local goverments to court?

If this is consistent with the state's established emergency laws then I don't see the problem. There's no Constitutional right not to vaccinate your children.

I heard on the radio that Trump is considering pardoning some (all?) of the people sentenced in the Mueller probe. Any validity to this? Because if so, (throws hands up in the air)

Potential good polling news, a CNN poll found that only 4 in 10 respondents believe that Barr's Mueller summary fully exonerates Trump of collusion. 58% of independents aren't buying Trump's victory lap.

That's less than I'd hoped, but more than I'd feared.

Rand Paul objects to releasing the Mueller report without also releasing information on why the FBI investigated Trump in the first place. Of course he does. :|

Awesome!

Someone cue up the footage of Trump's interview where he says he fired James Comey to make the Russia investigation go away. We sit Rand Paul down, we play him that footage, and then we'll have the Mueller Report by noon. Done deal!

EDIT: Also, it occurs to me that if we elect President Buttigieg, it will be the greatest prank we could possibly play on middle-school students of the future. If news anchors can't pronounce his name right, good luck on that oral history presentation, Little Timmy.

Like. It's a stupid little thing and absolutely not a reason to vote for him - there are reasons, but this isn't one of them - but it would be amazing to hear nine-year-olds trying to pronounce "President Buttgiggler."

And in some surprisingly positive news from this administration, HUD is charging Facebook with violating the Fair Housing Act, as the platform allows people to filter who can see the ad.

HUD says Facebook does so by "encouraging, enabling and causing housing discrimination" when it allows companies that use their platform to improperly shield who can see certain housing ads.

In the charging document, HUD accuses Facebook of unlawfully discriminating against people based on race, religion, familial status, disability and other characteristics that closely align with the 1968 Fair House Act's protected classes.

HUD also alleges Facebook allowed advertisers certain tools on their advertising platform that could exclude people who were classified as "non-American-born," "non-Christian" or "interested in Hispanic culture," among other things. It also said advertisers could exclude people based on ZIP code, essentially "drawing a red line around those neighborhoods on a map."

"Facebook is discriminating against people based upon who they are and where they live," HUD Secretary Ben Carson said in a statement.

"Using a computer to limit a person's housing choices can be just as discriminatory as slamming a door in someone's face."

It's not often they do something right, and it can be a low bar to clear for expectations, but credit where it's due on this one.

I find it hard to give credit for jumping on the band wagon. Facebook already announced a week ago they were going to stop the discriminatory ads after settling lawsuits over it with civil rights groups. Heck, the article even says so.

But when the option "Just don't be evil" is on the table, both evils are still evil.
This is the GOP; I'm not sure "Have you tried not being evil?" is an option they're mentally able to consider.
There is no reason we can't release the kids, reunite them with their parents and just let them go free.
To us, there's no reason. To the GOP, "But they're brown!" is enough of a reason to keep the parents in jail and their children separated from them.
They pushed for Hillary Clinton to be nominated when it was clear that voters were favoring Bernie Sanders,
Not this bullshit again. Stop parroting Russian propaganda.
Would you just vote for whoever happens to be at the top of the ballot? Or maybe you'd roll a die and vote accordingly? You have to do something weird along those lines to vote blind in primary.
On rare occasionsnote  I have flipped a coin or rolled a die.
Okay, Trump, ball's in your court. Tell us your brilliant plan for Trumpcare.
Saying that Trump has a plan is amazingly optimistic.
58% of independents aren't buying Trump's victory lap.

So he's either promising authoritarian retribution that he will later be informed he has no ability to carry out, or he's just blustering for his base. Probably both.

So lovely that these are the options whenever our President opens his mouth.

Sources say that the Mueller report is over 300 pages in length.

Even if it is released, parts may still be redacted to protect ongoing investigations and Grand Jury work.

That's good, but not good enough.

Just a reminder but "independents" often aren't all that independent and as such expecting all or most of them to agree with something partisan is almost certainly impossible.

Let's have actually reasonable goals.

Aye, if memory serves about 2/3 of all independents are either hardcore Republicans or Democrats. Some of them are even politicians themselves, like a certain senator from Vermont.

And just because you accept Barr's summary, doesn't mean that you will turn around and support Trump, begin to approve of his overall performance and commit to voting GOP. There are plenty of other factors in play.

Exactly, if anything the fact that 58% aren't buying his nonsense is really comforting and could very well be electoral significant.

Is there a bit about advertising in the Fair Housing Act?

According to Wikipedia, yes.

  • Refusal to sell or rent a dwelling to any person because of race, color, disability, religion, sex, familial status, or national origin.
  • Discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status, or national origin in the terms, conditions or privileges of sale or rental of a dwelling.
  • Advertising the sale or rental of a dwelling indicating preference, limitation, or discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, disability or national origin.
  • Coercing, threatening, intimidating, or interfering with a person's enjoyment or exercise of housing rights based on discriminatory reasons or retaliating against a person or organization that aids or encourages the exercise or enjoyment of fair housing rights.

And while it's a low bar, it's honestly helpful for us to acknowledge when the administration does do something right, as that helps mollify the "both sides!" folks when we then point out all the BS they do wrong, as that limits their ability to accuse us of just being anti-Trump.

He seems to go by "Mayor Pete", so I guess he would push for "President Pete"? I know in English you guys really like surnames but maybe an exception here would be warranted.
