Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

At this point it just remains to be seen how this will affect Trump's polls. If a significant portion of the current 50% disapproval was because people believed he was a Russian puppet, than this could very well screw us, and 2020 would likely be a Trump victory. On the other hand, if people disapprove of him because of his policies and/or personality, than this whole thing is just a footnote and our chances in 2020 won't be affected at all.
I'm going to be very interested in how 538's approval polls change over the coming weeks.
The Democrats in 2018 didn't run on Trump or Russiagate, and they did very well. I don't think the possibility of Russian collusion is a major reason for people's opposition to Trump, and I certainly don't think collusion possibly being non-existence will significantly buff Trump's position.

True, but even something as small as say, Trump gaining 5% more approval, could make could make a huge difference. With the way the electoral college still disadvantages Democrats, we really don't want the President to have anything close to 50-50 approval to disapproval rating.

Welp, stick a fork in Michael Avenatti's dreams of running for president. They're done.

And then hand that fork over to Pete Buttigieg, becuase he's shot up in the polls
.
The latest poll puts Mayor Pete in third place, behind Biden and Sanders.

$25 million, actually. I am not in a position to judge the truth of these cases against Avenatti, but I will say that nothing stated in them shocks me. Despite his representation of Daniels, he always came across to me as a bit "pushy": less of a lawyer and more of a showman.

I think we should avoid cheering or gravedancing. Avenatti, like all defendants, has the right to a presumption of innocence. That said, if these charges are true, he's scum, and any Democrat who cheered him on just because he was trying to stick it to Trump and Cohen probably has a bit of egg on their faces right now.

In the real world, it is possible to do both good deeds and bad deeds, because real people aren't caricatures of moral values. Doing good things doesn't get you off the hook for the bad ones, and doing bad things doesn't erase the good ones.
