Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And this is stupider - Jared Kushner is under investigation for using unsecured means of communication for official business
, including a personal email address and fucking WhatsApp!
Yeah no, the "Israel lobby" does not have intrinsic power, it relies on a large part of the American public supporting Israel. Once unconditional support for Israel becomes more and more partisan it's going to become more viable for the Democratic Party to criticize or censure Israel.
Furthermore the "Israel Lobby" didn't pass anything, it was pro-Israel politicians who answered to pro-Israel constituencies that did that. Lobbying plays a role but this common view of reducing everything around Israel to lobbying makes me rather uncomfortable.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangMeanwhile the American ambassador is really p... off the German Government
They are incorrect, though, technically they could expel them. But why bother? The replacement won't be any better. In any case, this guy is basically having a "good" time in Germany on the US taxpayers dime acting like an a-hole without getting any actual work done.
Pew: Republicans and Democrats Grow Even Further Apart in Views of Israel, Palestinians
...
Democrats are divided in views of the Middle East conflict: Currently, 27% of Democrats say they sympathize more with Israel, while 25% say they sympathize more with the Palestinians; another 23% say they sympathize with neither or both sides and one-quarter (25%) say they don’t know.

So according to the article linked to by Soban here
, support for Israel has become a partisan issue already.
Literally no one here has said Israel should disappear. I’m pretty sure prevailing opinion is that Netanyahu is awful and the Israeli government/military needs to stop screwing over/killing Palestinians and minorities, possibly a two state solution.

Regarding Kushner and Ivanka's use of f*cking WhatsApp for official government business, this is my favorite part of the story. Not from the link above but the New York Times
article on the topic:
Like. At what point while you're filling up an email folder with screenshots of your WhatsApp messages do you stop and go, "Maybe this isn't how I'm supposed to internet."
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.

That is stupid.
