Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The problem with putting Confederate statues in a museum us that you waste a lot of public money on re-situating them. Not just moving them, but creating whatever interpretive signage you feel rightly informs the viewers as to their significance - and, let's be honest, that's rife with potential for politicization. (Not that it's impossible; the documentary surrounding e.g. Fort Mc Allister doesn't paint the Confederates in the most sympathetic light.)
I've offered before in this thread that the very best usage for Confederate statuary might well be to replace disappearing reefs, providing a suitable habitat for aquatic wildlife ... while still offering viewing opportunities for those who truly want to visit them.
I still like the Daily Show's suggestion of updating Confederate statues to have famous black athletes dunking on the Confederate generals.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I wonder if this might make things interesting:
"Trump's border wall money may come at expense of schools for military kids" - http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-military-education/trumps-border-wall-money-may-come-at-expense-of-schools-for-military-kids-idUSKCN1R12EH
You don't need to preserve all the statues, but at least relocate some of the ones that have artistic merit to museums. Same opinion for monuments to Stalin, they visually reflect the culture of a certain age which can't be properly expressed in other forms.
Life is unfair...Kellyanne Conway defends Trump after he attacks her husband
'You think he should just take that sitting down?' she says about Trump after George Conway questioned his mental fitness.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall in the Conway household.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I'm very conflicted about this.
On the one hand, there's no denying that Trump has certain characteristics that could, if assessed and compared by a licensed professional, be the basis for a diagnosis.
On the other hand there's the goddamn pervasive Ableism of everyone and their mother fucking always trying to shove the behaviour of anyone they don't like onto one diagnosis or Ableist slur or another.
Let's just say I understand why LGBT people were so upset about the 'Trump and Putin are gay for each other' memes a lot better now (or I would if, being LGBT myself, I didn't understand that perfectly well already).
Angry gets shit done.
That is a legitimate problem, agreed. Ableist, LGBT, and/or racial slurs don't suddenly become okay because the person they're directed at is a member of the right-wing.
That said, there are a lot of people who have come to the conclusion that Trump suffers from narcissistic personality disorder, and it's notoriously difficult to diagnose and treat because people suffering from it typically don't believe that there is anything wrong with them, never mind that they should seek help.
The "fighting back" part, though, is absolutely stupid. The President is supposed to place himself and his office above that kind of pettiness. Obama didn't tweet angry retorts at people using the 'n' word; he called for civility in discourse.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Wait, when were there ableist slurs involved?

i'm tired, my friend
Armchair-diagnosing public figures with mental disorders is seen as a form of ableism. First, the people saying those things are not medical professionals and the targets of the comments are not under their medical care, so they are not qualified to render any diagnosis. Second, it implicitly devalues people who do legitimately suffer from such disorders.
It's a borderline case of ableism. It's like calling yourself "OCD" because you obsess over tidiness. That's not what the disease means and it can cause people who really have it to feel devalued.

Mine was adding a giant plaque detailing the evils of the CSA and the people that made those statue and then defacing the statues themselves
