Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's not really that complicated? If you're in Congress, you're a Congressperson. Congress is divided into the Senate and the House of Representatives. Therefore all Congresspeople are either Senators or Representatives. However, "representative" is ambiguous (lots of people are representatives of lots of things, most of which have nothing to do with government), so Representatives are often called "Congresspeople" (accurate but less specific) or "members of the House" (specific but wordier) instead.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Trump response to New Zealand massacre highlights his combative history with Muslims
Basically instead of actually condemning the attack and White Supremacy he claims the media is saying it's his fault.
Though, apparently the guy who did it, a white Australian man, referred to Trump as "a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose" in his manifesto.
Because Trump is clearly the ''real'' victim in all this.
Of course, that probably is what he actually believes. He's just that self-centered.
Disgusted, but not surprisedYou know, at this point they should just cut him off from any social media and press access whenever something terrible happens - because no comment would vastly better than whatever asinine bullshit he keeps spouting in these situations.

2/ Trump accused "the fake news media" of attempting to blame him for the mass shooting at two mosques in New Zealand, calling it "So Ridiculous!" In a manifesto, the alleged gunman called Trump "a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose," and referred to immigrants as "invaders within our lands." Trump told reporters he doesn't believe white nationalism is a rising threat around the world, suggesting "it's a small group of people that have very, very serious problems, I guess." 3/ Mick Mulvaney: Trump "is not a white supremacist." The acting chief of staff went on to say it was "absurd" to draw a connection between Trump's statements about immigration and the acts of a shooter who embraced both white nationalism and Trump. Last week Trump called undocumented immigrants coming to U.S. an "invasion" as he vetoed a congressional resolution that would block his declaration of a national emergency at the U.S. border with Mexico. 4/ Trump called for Fox News to bring back Jeanine Pirro after she was suspended for questioning a Muslim lawmaker's loyalty to the United States during an on-air monologue. Pirro asked if Representative Ilhan Omar's "adherence to this Islamic doctrine indicative of her adherence to Shariah law, which in itself is antithetical to the United States Constitution?" Fox News said Pirro's remarks "do not reflect those of the network and we have addressed the matter with her directly." Trump claimed "The Radical Left Democrats, working closely with their beloved partner, the Fake News Media, is using every trick in the book to SILENCE a majority of our Country." Trump also tweeted his support for Tucker Carlson, who has also recently faced criticism for a series of racist, xenophobic, sexist, and other comments. "Stay true," Trump tweeted, "to the people that got you there. Keep fighting for Tucker, and fight hard for @Judge Jeanine." (CNN / Politico / New York Times)

5/ Federal authorities raided the office of Elliot Broidy last summer in order to obtain documents related to the fundraiser's dealings with foreign officials and Trump administration associates. Federal agents searched Broidy's office for documents related to China, Saudi Arabia, and a Miami Beach club promoter related to conspiracy, money laundering, and crimes associated with illegal lobbying on behalf of foreign officials. The sealed warrant revealed government investigators took a similar approach to searching Michael Cohen's office. Broidy served as a Trump campaign fundraiser and was the national deputy finance chair of the Republican National Committee until he resigned in April 2018, after it was revealed he had secretly paid off a former Playboy model in exchange for her silence about their affair. 6/ Trump claimed he encouraged House Republicans to vote in favor of a resolution calling on the Justice Department to make Robert Mueller's final report public. Earlier in the day, however, Trump tweeted that the special counsel "should never have been appointed" and that "there should be no Mueller Report." The House approved the resolution last week 420-0 to demand that Attorney General William Barr release Mueller's entire report and make it available to Congress. The resolution was blocked by Republicans in the Senate. (Politico)

Trump pulled Rudy Giuliani from doing TV interviews after the lawyer claimed the Trump Tower Moscow talks may have lasted up until November 2016. Trump tweeted that he wanted the General Motors Ohio plant to be "opened or sold to a company who will open it up fast!" In November, G.M. announced that it would idle five factories in North America and cut roughly 14,000 jobs to trim costs. Trump's tweets were an attempt to pressure G.M. and the United Automobile Workers union to begin negotiations on an agreement that would put the plant back to work. Trump added that the president of U.A.W. "ought to get his act together and produce." (New York Times)

Kellyanne Conway's husband believes that Trump's mental condition is deteriorating. Kellyanne disagrees. George Conway tweeted last week that "whether or not impeachment is in order, a serious inquiry needs to be made about this man's condition of mind." He continued through the weekend by tweeting screenshots from American Psychiatric Association's "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders," highlighting pages that include diagnostic criteria for "narcissistic personality disorder" and "antisocial personality disorder." Kellyanne told reporters that she does not share George's concerns. (CNN / Washington Post)

Which, irony of ironies, is how you actually make yourself look good in such a situation.
Showing some human decency makes people like you more. Shocking, that.

Not "rebirth", more of a "reemergence": all those Neo-Nazis were already there, they didn't all pop into existence when Trump got elected.
US society has always been this ugly, is the unfortunaye truth.
I got a question. Out of all the high profile Democratic Candidates, which of them do you think that TRUMP thinks he has the best chance of beating? Rank 'em if you could, just so we get a bit more debate. The reason I ask is that he is once again going to be doing something largely unprecedented (I think) for 2020. Most incumbents have stayed out of the challenging party's primary. There is no way that Trump will do likewise - if just to get the attention he craves. He's going to fear and thus attack some candidates more than others - who are they going to be, whereas who is going to get off lightly because he thinks he can beat them?
(Trump liveblogging the Democrat Debates could be unintentionally hilarious to be fair)
I'd rank it the following way:
- Warren the easiest (Pocahontas has stuck, unfortunately and Warren has not handled it very deftly)
- Sanders (Probably only because he "knows" Bernie from 2016)
- Gillibrand (NY Female politician - we've already seen how disgusting he can be here)
- Biden (Sees him as his main "rival" I guess)
- Booker Klobacher (I don't think he really has an opinion on them)
- O'Rouke (He's got under Trump's skin somehow - probably a good looking white guy threatens Trump on that basis alone)
- Harris (Former Attorney General vibe is going to be intimidating to Trump I would think)
We know Trump's afraid of Biden and he seems to be lashing out around Beto
...I think the candidates he's most worried about are actually the ones that'd do the worst against him, though? Which would suggest that people should vote for Warren in the primaries

She clarified she's open to multiple paths to universal coverage. That's not quite the same thing as walking back on Medicare for All entirely.
I'm no Warren supporter — I've probably been the most vocal in my disdain for her on this forum — but saying she's "walking back" on it seems a tad unfair.

Media really loves taking nuanced arguments and reducing them to pithy sound bites that play well for audiences but misrepresent the facts. This, sadly, occurs across the spectrum. Some of my favorite shows have done it.

Trump insulting someone doesn’t mean he doesn’t fear them, if anything I’d say it indicates that he does fear them. Which kinda explains a lot about Trump, he’s afraid of everything, thus why he insulting everything and everyone.
We had this same argument in 2016. Bernie likes Medicare-for-All, and so Medicare-for-All gets cast among Bernie's fans as the one true path to universal healthcare, bar none. Either you 100% support Medicare-for-All or you want poor people to die from preventable illnesses.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Calling for Medicare-For-All right now, right this instant, no matter what, is like wanting a quarterback to loft a Hail Mary pass on every drive and then getting angry when he's doing three or four running and pass plays a down and still getting the touchdown. What Sen. Warren said was that there was more than one way to skin a cat, not that the ultimate goal had somehow changed.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."

It's just one of those weird idiosyncrasies, like "a few" generally meaning 3-4 of a particular thing, but there's no actual fixed number attached to it.
And page-topper context - this is about the fact that "Congressperson" can mean both the Senate and House, but generally applies to the House as "Representative" is far more ambiguous, and Senator is a much more exclusive term.
