The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I mean, Trump was hardly gonna have a realistic chance of winning in Washington State anyway- so it's one of those things that the Electoral College means it doesn't matter.

Well, Paul Verhoeven's work, especially Starship Troopers, is openly satirizing that brand of ultra-violence. Especially how it leads to a level of nationalism and toxic masculinity (and at the extreme end: fascism).

[up][up][up] If Trump releases fraudulent versions of his tax returns, the House at least has a basis for an investigation and can subpoena people either who are mentioned on his taxes (such as tax-preparers and ex-wives who jointly filed with him) or who were known to have paid him over the relevant years.

Trump will just tweet "Washington's rigging the election!"

He doesn't have a chance of hell at winning there, as has been mentioned.

Honestly, I think more work is done in police training and culture than the media. Mind you, it's not like the police have ever had a good reputation in the United States among certain groups.

The Washington thing scares me, as I expect some of Florida, Texas, Georgia, Ohio, Iowa and Arizona (six states with republican trifectas) to retaliate and pass laws denying the democrat candidate the right to be on the ballot.

A dangerous door has been opened.

[up] All the text of the law says is that in order to get on the state ballot, candidates must release their tax returns, without mentioning Individual One or the Republicans specifically.

Sure and what happens when Ohio passes a law saying that to get on the ballot a candidate must denounce “the rising threat of communism and assert that America will never embrace socialism”, or Florida requires that a candidate own property in Florida and have owned it for five years, or Texas requires that a candidate must not be a member of the Democratic Party.

Hell im sure that Republicans can come up with a dozen random and weird restrictions that Trump could pass that a specific democrat candidate won’t.

Make it so that by being on the ballot they grant permission for the electoral commission to get their returned from the IRS and publish them, don’t actually limit ballot access.

3 cities in the U.S. have ended chronic homelessness: Here’s how they did it

One key to the process is data, and a visual dashboard that lets agencies track people experiencing homelessness in real time. In Abilene, with a population a little more than 120,000, for example, the city located every homeless veteran, gathered information about each individual situation, and stored this information in a “by-name list” that was continually updated. “It basically just forced us to continuously look to change improvements to our system, and how to use real-time data to improve our performance,” says John Meier, the program manager for supportive services for veteran families for the West Central Texas Regional Foundation. “We’ve always had lots of data sitting around, but haven’t had it in one place and [haven’t been] utilizing it to our advantage.” Every agency in the city began working together and meeting to discuss how to get each veteran–21 people, as of February 2018–into housing. While watching the data, they could test interventions like working with local landlords and the public housing agency to prioritize people on the list. The average amount of time to house a veteran shrank from more than 40 days to 26. By November 2018, 10 months after joining the Built for Zero program, Abilene had reached the goal of “functional zero” for veteran homelessness. (It made the announcement in February in part because it was waiting for federal confirmation, which was delayed by the government shutdown.)

...

The nonprofit partnered with the Tableau Foundation, a philanthropic arm of Tableau Software, to use the company’s data visualization tools.

...

The county had the resources to achieve the “functional zero” goal, Orlando says. But the focus of the program and its use of data helped it actually accomplish it. While cities and organizations working on the problem of homelessness often point to a lack of resources, it may be the case in many communities that the right resources exist–or can be mobilized–with a more strategic approach. “Once communities can actually see what’s going on, they can make informed decisions about where to put resources and where new resources are needed,” says Haggerty. In Montgomery County, Maryland, the government used specific data to say exactly how much money it needed to end veteran homelessness, and that helped get it the funding to reach the goal.

One thing that's missing is a cost benefit analysis which is something I would like to see.

Homelessness in America didn't used to be a thing. It was a problem that HAD been taken care of before policies in the United States dealing with the mentally ill, veterans, and government funded shelters were all removed by Ronald Reagan.

On the campaign trail!

Kennedy said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. Gillibrand says, "Porque no los dos?"

Kirstin Gillibrand wants to encourage young people to get into public service, and suggests paying for college in exchange for that service. This has been a consistent part of her platform, as she believes the experience will be beneficial both from a civic responsibility standpoint and it offers job experience should those who take it up find they actually like the public service sector.

She also officially declared her candidacy on the steps of the Trump Hotel in New York.

"Read my lips; No new executions."

Kamala Harris says she'll put a hold on federal executions if elected, attacking the racial bias inherent in the death penalty system. This is in contrast to her time as an attorney general: "While Harris has personally opposed the death penalty, she has said that she defended the law as a matter of professional obligation to the state."

Sanders is so into Medicare-for-All he cut his own face to prove it.

Okay, not really, but Bernie Sanders attended a round table discussion with both doctors who say Medicare-for-All would make their jobs easier and the patients for whom it would make their lives much better. He also cut his head in the shower and was sporting a giant bandage on the side of his head all day.

Cory in the House.

Cory Booker clarifies his positions in Iowa. Specifically that he would protect Roe v. Wade, labor unions, and push for stronger gun control. The union heavy audience especially appreciated that middle one, "If I'm president, my judges will believe in unions and make sure that the fundamental right in this county to collectively bargain, to organize, is preserved. I will push legislation where the right to organized is better affirmed."

"I can go the distance!"

Pete Buttigieg clears the primary debate qualification by bringing in 65,000 donors from across 20 states. Despite being almost a non-existent national figure Buttigieg was boosted by a townhall hosted by CNN where he accused fellow Indianan Mike Pence of being a "cheerleader for the porn star presidency." He also called out Howard Schultz for lying about having spent more time with the military than any Democratic candidate. Buttigeig was actually in the military and served in the Middle East.

A penny for your privilege.

Beto O'Rourke scoffs at the idea that being a white man puts him at a disadvantage in a primary where diversity is valued. "As a white man who has had privileges that others could not depend on, or take for granted, I've clearly had advantages over the course of my life. I think recognizing that and understanding that others have not — doing everything I can to ensure that there is opportunity and the possibility for advancement and advantage for everyone — is a big part of this campaign and a big part of the people who comprise this campaign.”

Give 'em Hell, Julian!

Julian Castro proposes a 21st Century Marshall Plan for Latin America, similar to what the US undertook in war-torn Europe under President Truman. His plan would mostly focus on El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, the three nations sending the most refugees to the US. “Throughout our history the United States has benefited form having stronger relationships, including investments in Europe, that have kept us and the world safer and benefited us economically. I believe it’s time to look at Latin America in the same way.”

Brass Tacks with Warren.

Elizabeth Warren sits down to discuss her passion policies. Consumer protection (Amazon uses the sales data from other companies products to make their own and then deliberately stifle the business of the latter.), China (Trump's trade war is idiotic, but the plan under Obama didn't do enough to protect workers), Climate change (National infrastructure needs to be rebuilt to withstand the new extreme weather), and reparations (American Indians should be included as well.)

I wound up watching NBC's "Meet the Press" today and it mentions an alleged correlation of high Student debt with support of socialism and had a discussion on how white nationalism was helped by the internet (mainly the dark web). AT least the last one is obvious (though I think they left out certain Image Boards) but it does have me wondering exactly how should lawmakers act to stop the alt-right's online power and prevent cases like the New Zealand attack from happening again, and if social media sites should be treated like and held to the same standards as media companies rather aggregators.

Washington's state Senate passed a bill this week that would drop President Trump from the state's 2020 presidential ballot until he releases his tax returns.
I don't think Trump will; it's not like he was ever in danger of winning the state. Now, if it was somewhere like Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Florida ... then I think other tropers are correct that his tax returns would be less accurate than Al Capone's.
The last one would be easily struck down as un-Constitutional. The first one seems nonsensical, so I'm expecting you to drop a link showing it's already been passed in the McCarthy era. The second one seems possible to enforce only on a state level, but is a lovely example of the hatred of the poor that the GOP has come to embody, so it wouldn't surprise me if that existed as well.

Demanding that someone be a resident (not own property necessarily) of the jurisdiction they are running in seems like a pretty standard thing for every office except President.

I'm pretty sure that requiring a President to be a resident of a given state could be challenged on the basis that it effectively prevents residents of that state from running for Vice-President (since the Constitution requires electors in the electoral college to vote for people from different states for President and Vice-President.)

I didn’t state a residency requirement, just a requirement to own property, you can own property in multiple states.

That’s just the things I can come up with, the state level GO Ps will be able to come up with much more conveluted ones, I don’t know, the requirement to own a gun to appear on the ballot?
