The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Here's a good start: fuck you woman, I hope you go to jail for life, and fuck you, Tucker Carlson, for having such a despicable and deplorable mindset.

Revolting, yet rather par for the course for Tucker Carlson.

BTW, that stuff about glorifying statutory rape is only part of it. The rest of the stuff mentioned in that Mediamatters article is also awful.

Direct link to the article

Between 2006 and 2011, Tucker Carlson spent approximately an hour a week calling in to Bubba the Love Sponge, a popular shock jock radio program where he spoke with the hosts about a variety of cultural and political topics in sometimes-vulgar terms. During those conversations, Carlson diminished the actions of Warren Jeffs, then on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list for his involvement in arranging illegal marriages between adults and underage girls, talked about sex and young girls, and defended statutory rape.

Carlson, who was hired by Fox News in 2009, also used sexist language to talk about women, including then-co-workers at NBC and public figures. He referred to Martha Stewart’s daughter Alexis Stewart as “cunty,” called journalist Arianna Huffington a “pig,” and labeled Britney Spears and Paris Hilton “the biggest white whores in America.” He also said that women enjoy being told to “be quiet and kind of do what you’re told” and that they are “extremely primitive.”

Off-topic, but "Bubba the Love Sponge" is such a gross sounding name, but I guess with him being a "shock jock" it fits.

Someone bought up TrumpHotels.org (which for some reason Trump or his allies didn't) and has turned it into an advertising campaign against Trump's immigrant detention.

Swedish and other Scandinavian immigrants fought overwhelmingly for the federal Union during the Civil War, to the point of forming all Scandinavian military companies from the immigrant communities. I have absolutely no doubt Tuckerson would fight for the Confederacy is he had lived back then and happily kill his own ancestors.

His cartoon was anti-semitic, but that was the point, he uses anti-semitic caricatures satirically. If she didn't know (which I didn't) it would be understandable to view them as grotesque.

Because that's the point.

As a Jew, I got a good chuckle from reading that. Not at the political cartoon itself, while I agree with its message, I'm not a fan of political cartoons that just slap labels onto everything, but at Meghan McCain's expense.

I did read that Tucker Carlson thing and it came off as rather incoherent but also as white-washy. Or maybe I should start drinking coffee at some point.

Speaking of (but perfectly SFW), US Rep. Pressley: Lower federal voting age from 18 to 16 and Oregon may lower the voting age to 16. I also note how nonsensical the counter arguments so far are.

[up] Saw this gem in the Organ article:

Oregon Senate Republican leader Herman Baertschiger Jr. opposes the idea.

"16-year-olds are too young to enlist in the military, too young to own firearms, too young to own property, too young to enter into legal contracts, and too young to get married. But they are old enough to vote? People are not legally considered adults in this country until they are 18 years old, and I believe they shouldn't be able to vote until then either," he said in a statement Tuesday. "This is nothing more than an attempt to expand the voter rolls to sway elections."

Well, that's what all of their criticisms to expanding voting rights comes down to.

The stranger thing is how often they actually say it, but apparently don't realize how anti-democratic that sentiment actually is.

It's not like they can try to appeal to younger voters, given that pretty much all of their policies are geared towards coddling rich old people. The only thing the GOP can really offer young people is more bigotry...which admittedly might be effective at keeping the young white middle-class vote.

Oh, I sure they do realize but don't care. Besides, not all young people are Democrats. And I recall that the things this guy says 16 year old can't do actually happen with a certain frequency.
