Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Their just calling Cohen a "lying liar who lies" and I'm honestly not sure if that isn't an exact quote.
Interestingly though, Trump said that Cohen didn't lie about one thing: That Cohen said there was no collusion with Russia.
Except Cohen didn't say that. So once again Trump is living in his own reality.
It's not an exact quote. That quote would be slightly more dignified. This
is the exact quote.
Cohen shot back, “Sir, I’m sorry. Are you talking about me or the president?”
The sarcastic response led Gosar to fume, “This is my time,” and he angrily instructed Cohen, “When I ask a question, I’ll ask for an answer.”
Gosar wrapped up his questions by telling Cohen: “Look at the old adage our moms taught us: ‘Liar, liar, pants on fire.'”
“No one should ever look at you and expect the truth,” he said.
“This is a really sad state.”
At one point, a large poster with the words “LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE!” against a background of red flames — and a black-and-white photo of a hapless-looking Cohen — was set up on an easel behind the rows of Republican lawmakers.
Cohen later called the sign “really unbecoming of Congress.”
In other news, the United Methodist Church has decided
not to officiate same-sex weddings and bar homosexual clergy members. Suffice to say, the traditionalists are pleased (and as noted in the article, ~30% of the organizations methods are African, and a lot of African nations have criminalized homosexuality), and the reformists are thinking this might start yet another church.
I’m a United Methodist. Very sad but not surprised.
I’d like to note that the homophobia of the African congregations is heavily influenced by white American preachers spreading homophobia.
The Russian delegation was also very homophobic; American congregations voted 2/3 to support welcoming LGBT people.

It wasn't even about welcoming LGBT people, the rejected plan was to allow each congregation to choose whether or not to officiate same-sex marriages. So it's a case of the delgates imposing their bigotry on its tolerant members.
Life is unfair...Well, for those that ask, the pushback appears to be this:
Republican congressmen report Cohen for perjury
In a public letter to new Trump-appointed attorney general William Burr, Jordan and Meadows said Cohen had made “numerous willfully (sic) and intentionally false statements of material fact” during the hearing.
The pair said:
"Mr Cohen’s testimony before the Committee on Oversight and Reform on February 27 2019 was a spectacular and brazen attempt to knowing (sic) and willfully (sic) testify falsely and fictitiously to numerous material facts."
Jordan and Meadows said Cohen had lied when he said in the hearing: “I never defrauded any bank.”
They claim that statement is false as Cohen had “pleaded guilty to five counts of income tax evasion [and] one count of making false statements to a banking institution”.
They also said that Cohen was lying when he told the committee he did not seek employment in the Trump White House.
Jordan and Meadows cited court filings made by the US attorney’s office for the southern district of New York, which said Cohen had “privately told friends and colleagues, including in seized text messages, that he expected to be given a prominent role and title in the new administration”.
The response from Cohen's lawyer is here:
"Cohen testified truthfully," attorney says
"Mr Cohen testified truthfully before the House Oversight Committee. He took full responsibility for his guilty pleas. He also backed up much of his testimony with documents. It may not be surprising that two pro-Trump Committee members known have a baseless criminal referral. In my opinion, it is a sad misuse of the criminal justice system with the aura of pure partisanship."
A key tactic of Republicans on the House committee yesterday was to discredit Cohen and lessen the impact of his testimony.

Related to this, I've noticed that every time the point is brought up that if Obama pulled even a fraction of the stuff that Trump does, Republicans would be screaming bloody murder, they never give a satisfactory answer as to why it's okay when Trump does it. They quickly change the subject.
"Uh, well, uh, hey look, a cloud shaped like a fidget spinner!"

But they're still part of the "legal profession" in a broader sense.
